Phantasm IV: Oblivion 4.5 stars - The fourth, and possibly final, episode is this series; true horror classics, each and every one. "If this one doesn't scare you, you're already dead!" I can't you how much I enjoyed this one. You gotta see 'em all.

Reggie: "Some cops can be real a**holes."

The Visitors "Visiteurs, Les" 3.35 stars - A good slapstick French movie with english subtitles. In a nutshell, a medieval knight and his servant are mistakenly sent ahead in time to modern day France. Needless to say, their reaction to the modern world is quite funny, and the slapstick is often stupidly funny. PQ was pretty good. You don't often see silly slapstick on World Cinema, and this one was enjoyable...worth a look.

The Official Story "Historia oficial, La" 4 stars - Excellent film! An Argentina woman, an adoptive parent, discovers the truth about her cruel and corrupt government when she investigates what what happened to her daughter's biological parents. As she goes on searching for the truth, she realizes that her husband, a former military officer, knew many of the answers beforehand. This is a somewhat slow and often dark film, but it is poignant and very well done. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. A must see!

Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2.5 stars - This one was so bad it was actually enjoyable! Aliens who look like "Klowns" come from outer space and terrorize a small town by zapping them with popcorn guns and spinning them into human cotton candy. Stupid + Idiotic = Not too shabby! Pretty good PQ.

Italian for Beginners (2000) 3.5 stars at first it looks like this film was not going to be any good but as the characters started to mingle and more of the story was revealed, the film took a very pleasant direction. The film is about ordinary people living ordinary lives and all of them have a common place to meet --- learning italian. Their lives come together and their stories from each walk of life comes into the screen. Very nice how it was put together.

Clerks (1994) 4.0 stars. This is a relative low budget film but it is an excellent film. It is B&W and tells the story of two clerks and the customers that they meet in every day live. Fascinating was the plot between Dante and his girlfriend. The dialogue between the two makes you watch the film by itself. Excellent comedy.

The Last Detail (1973) 4.0 stars Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, and Randy Quaid give you an excellent performance about Meadow who has been court-martial to serve an 8 year sentence for petty-theaft. It is the job of Nicholson and Young to escort Meadow (Randy) to prison. The trip takes them 5 days through the northeast region of the US where Nicholson gets to know Meadow and feels sympathetic to the harsh sentence he got. All in all it is a good entertaining film with very good moments of comedy.

Clerks - 4 stars: Sean hit the nail on the head with his review -- this one's all about the dialogue and the relationships/interactions between the characters. Personally, I found the relationship between Dante and Randal to be as interesting as any other. The first time I saw this movie I thought it was one of the funniest and thought-provoking movies I'd ever seen. It still is.

:hatsoff:

Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll - 1.5 stars: A one-man stand-up routine. Sort of. He didn't really do jokes -- he just kinda portrayed characters. Some of them were amusing and entertaining. Others not so much. I pretty much lost interest before it was even close to over.

Shaolin Soccer - 3 stars: This is one stuuuuupid movie. That I liked. A lot. There are countless cringe-worthy moments that are almost embarrassing to watch, and yet I very much enjoyed the ridiculous special effects and overall tongue-in-cheek making-fun-of-itself tone of the movie. It does not take itself seriously at all -- which is a good thing, because it is just plain ridiculous. Entertaining as hell, but ridiculous. And it has some first rate surround sound effects.

Music From Another Room - 3.5 stars: Wow. Where has this movie been? With such a great cast, I'm surprised I've never even heard of it -- leave it to voOm to dig up another hidden gem! The cast included Jude Law, Gretchen Mol, Martha Plimpton, Jeremy Piven, Jennifer Tilly -- who were all excellent. But the real stars may have been all the unknowns (to me at least) who made the side characters come to life. I didn't want this movie to end. I want to know what happens next. To me, that's a sign of a really good movie.

Backyard - 0 stars: According to the PG, this alleged documentary "examines the politics that have arisen from whites and blacks living together in the modern South". Um, no. It does take place in the south. There are blacks. There are whites. I'm not so sure 1984 qualifies as "modern" anymore. And this film doesn't really "examine" a damned thing. Sometimes there is a fine line between "documentary" and "home movie". Not here. These are clearly home movies. And not good ones. Got a camcorder and a family? Chances are you have a more compelling "documentary" or two sitting on a shelf in your family room.

Requiem For A Dream - 4 stars: This is not an easy movie to watch. But it's good. It deals with some heavy topics, like addiction and loneliness and sadness. It is very creatively shot. Ellen Burstyn is outstanding. Other parts aren't quite so well done (I'm looking at you , Jared Leto). I loved the sound -- crank up the subwoofer and your walls'll be pulsating. This one isn't for everybody, but I enjoy it.

Army of Darkness - 3.5 stars: Inarguably dumb, but I find it hilariously entertaining. There are some truly awful scenes/lines/acting here, but I don't care. I think that was kind of the point of the whole thing. To make fun of itself and entertain us along the way. Mission accomplished.

Joe the King 3.5 stars - A very good though provoking film about a young teenage boy who turns to theft to vent his anger and frustration. The young man basically has no positive influences in his life: an abusive, alcoholic father that is rarely around, unless he is there to smack him around, a harsh mother who can't manage her own affairs, much less those of her family, and a self-centered older brother. I found myself pulling for this character since he basically has a good heart...just mad bad choices after being dealt difficult circumstances.

Poltergeist 4.5 stars. I remember why this movie is a classic horror movies. The actors do such a good job to make it real that this movie still scares the hell out of you. One of Spielberg's finest work. Watch this and get a kick of good this movie is. Now watching in HD is even better. BTW, OAR 3:2:51. It couldn't be better.

World Cinema HD movie

Flores de Otro Mundo (Flowers from another world) 3.5 stars
This is a serious movie with funny moments about a small town in Spain which has too many single men and not enough single women. The town organizes a party inviting single women in of blind dates. The movie opens with a bus-load of women from all over coming to the town for the party. From there the movie follows 3 couples and their relationships as they mature. Very well done and very realistic depictions of life in rural Spain.

Spanish (Castillian) sub-titled in English (Brittish). The sub-titled translation is pretty good, but not perfect. Some humor is lost and idioms do not translate well (that's why the 3.5 stars instread of 4)

See ya
Tony

World Cinema Movie

Slam 1998. 3.0 stars. A film and a documentary about a very tragic social issue in today's society -- why are we killing ourselves. Through modern poetry the poet conveys his message of peace to ordinary people living in poverty conditions. I like the film and the message. The acting was very good and I imagine that this was quite a low budget film but it deliver the message quite well. Give it a try. I did not think I was going to sit through the whole movie but instead I watched all and was quite entertaining and enjoyable. A very rare film to find these days on any channel.

I forget the channel but Judgment At Nuremburg. 4.0 stars.

I saw it many years ago but I was surprised at how a lot of comments and situations in the story (1947) are similar to the way things are today. Quite a comment on how history repeats itself.
