I spoke to VOOM CSR's again today and they insist that it is possible to record VOOM HD programming to a DVHS though they said it was against company policy to give the name of the DVHS that can do this. I would really like to be able to record an occasional program and I believe that the DVR will not be available until the 3rd quarter of 2005 and based on VOOM's current policy of not allowing people who own their boxes to rent any other equipment it seems doubtful that I will be able to get one even when they are available. (i.e. I would never purchase another piece of equipment from VOOM).

Wilt how do you record the VOOM HD signal to a DVHS recorder?

What do you base your belief of 3rd QTR 2005 from?

Hi:
I base my belief on VOOM's past performance. i.e. 1. they do not test products before they release them. 2. they do not have installers available to handle even a small increase in demand. 3. they can not do more than one thing at a time and their current focus is adding 30 more HD channels in the next 4 months (as this is all the CSR's are allowed to talk about when you call) 4. A DVR uses more complicated software than a set-top box and VOOM is unable to develop working software.

If VOOM was to start shipping DVR's to intallers today - I would estimate 4 months after introduction before they actually were installed and working. If they take until April/May of 2005 to get them to installers (not unlikely) then it will be the third quarter
or 2005 before they get the installations done and the software working.

As I said, VOOM's policy of not allowing customers who own their boxes to lease any additional equipment from VOOM will keep me from getting the DVR anyway. I just want to record an occasional show to watch at a later time so DVHS is fine with me.

RE: [VOOM] Wilt - How do you record VOOM HD to DVHS

Well you paint a pretty negative view and as the active moderator of this
yahoo group, I can tell you that the signup's are fast and furious. It used
to be a new member to this group a day.. maybe even a couple days go by ..
now I'm getting numerous signup's every day.

I will say that during September/October, we didn't hear a peep out of Voom
and rumors were flying fast and furious. I was very down on Voom and ready
to pull the plug myself now that my cable co has a hddvr for $12 a month.
But now that we finally see forward progress with the new channels by march
and a slew of new programming on the hd channels we have now, I am once
again excited. Of course I'm still disappointed the dvr is months away, but
the other options aren't that great. Direct-Tv and Dish have a dvr..
$600-$1000 and they only offer what? 11 channels? big deal. Time Warner
cable offers an HDdvr for $12 a month but other than inhd/inhd2 they only
offer 5 or 6 hd channels plus 4 locals.. again big deal. Only Voom has the
most HD and the BEST HD programming available and only going to get better
in the short few months ahead.

Re: [VOOM] Wilt - How do you record VOOM HD to DVHS

In the meantime, get yourself a S-VHS VCR, connect it with an S-VHS cable to the the MOT STB and record what/when you desire.
D-VHS is just an expensive, short-lived solution and it requires a Firewire input. The MOT Box has no Firewire output and the gods of satellite box mods (169time.com) say it can't be done to our MOT STBs. Case Closed.
I can get my $12.00 a month HD-DVR from Cox also, but they have like 7 channels and most are OTA. So what to record?
So get the S-VHS and enjoy 330 lines. It's better than standard VHS at 240 lines. And better than complaining about not having a DVR.
After all, what good is a HD-DVR with little to record while VOOM has tons more HD to watch.

I wouldn't say it is negative - just realistic. If VOOM was honest about when customers should have expected the DVR, OTA scanning, 39 HD channels, etc.. then no one would be negative (except the PQ nit-pickers).

I am glad that VOOM is signing up new customers but after one year I do not think they have solved any of the problems that require most installs to involve more than one visit by an installer. This alone will delay introduction of the DVR as VOOM would be foolish to release it at the same time that they have a backlog of intalls.

All this is kind of off my topic which was how do I record VOOM HD to a DVHS. I have had VOOM for 11 months and I still can not record a program to watch later.

RE: [VOOM] Wilt - How do you record VOOM HD to DVHS

Just for the record, I was talking about people signing up to the Yahoo Voom

I "completely" understand your frustration with the lack of DVR. Like I
said, I too was ready to leave Voom just a few weeks ago but with the recent
announcements, it appears to me that Voom is working very hard behind the
scenes but like most big companies, don't say anything until the day they do
something. This sucks for us customers, but is typical for a large company.

RE: [VOOM] Wilt - How do you record VOOM HD to DVHS

If they had announced their intentions on the new channels ahead of time
they *might* have kept me as a customer. They also still haven't announced
their plans to deal with the potential loss of bandwidth on the borrowed
bird which had me worried. Their web site is full of disclaimers about some
channels being at risk if they lose that borrowed space. I'll wait until
they solve that and have a DVR solution before I consider returning. A pile
of SVHS tapes is not a DVR solution and not something I'm willing to do.
That's how I solved my need 10 years ago, long before Tivo altered my
expectations.

Thanks Wilt - the CSR's insist that there is a DVHS that records from component or DVI and that VOOM has tested this and they are just not allowed to give out the name/model of the DVHS - I really think they are just reading that from a script - but who would write such a script unless it was true.

Why doesn't the VOOM box have 1394 - I think all HD cable boxes are required to have it and the OTA HD set top box I used to have had it as well?

RE: [VOOM] Wilt - How do you record VOOM HD to DVHS

I don't know of any such box, nor why we'd be keeping a secret of it.
As to firewire, check back in the threads and you'll see some discussion of
that and the issues with MPEG 4.
