And that's why when I buy a game, I buy physical media.
The exceptions are when it's digital only or a really awesome deal (and even then I look for deals on a physical disc if it's a game I really like).
It depends on the situation. In this case buying physical media would have made absolutely no difference. They temporarily shut down Origin in this country. When you buy a physical copy of a PC game that requires Origin, Steam, uPlay, etc you still have to redeem your CD key on that service to verify that you have a legal copy. If Origin is temporarily shut down you won't have any better luck trying to play your physical copy of Mass Effect 3 than someone who bought it digitally from Origin.
Not only that but PC games often contain only a small fraction of the game on disc and you have to download the rest. For example, I bought a physical copy of Doom on PC from Amazon because their 20% off for Prime members only works on physical copies. The box they sent me came with one DVD that can hold up to 8.5GB of data even though the game is probably 50GB+. Even if you weren't required to redeem your CD key on Steam in order to play Doom good luck playing your physical copy without the other 40GB+ of data that needs to be downloaded.
Star Wars Battlefront was even worse. The physical copy of that game doesn't even include a disc. It's just a DVD case with a CD key inside. The point is that unless you are buying the rare PC game that is DRM free, offers a physical release, and includes 6 DVDs like The Witcher 3 physical copies are basically useless.
Even on consoles where they use 50GB blu-ray discs there are games like The Master Chief collection that don't fit on the disc and require you to download the rest as a patch. Then there are the games like Destiny and The Division that require a constant internet connection. This isn't even taking into account all the games that are basically broken until you get the day one patch. The last 2 console generations have really taken us past the point where you are going to be able to pop a disc in 20 years down the road after the servers have been shut down and get the full experience from your games.
