I have moved up to 4K viewing and want to look into updating my D* lineup. This is what I currently have.
HR24---Bedroom
H24---Den
HR44-700---Living Room
C41---Son bedroom (Not cabled in this room).
WVBR0-25
TV-Samsung 55MU8000
My Dish was installed on my roof so changing LNB may be an issue.

Apparently I will need new equipment to get 4K, but what will I need? I only want it on one tv and don't want to break the bank to get it set up. Will they just give me a HR54 and a 4K client? And if I take this, it will force me into a 2 year contract, correct?
Not sure if it's worth setting this all up for 3 channels, one of which I won't use (PPV).
I do not have Protection Plan
I am not under contract
It has been a while since I have upgraded equipment.

replace hr44 with hr54
replace c41 with c61k (c61k goes on 4k tv)
you will have a new 2 year contract.
cost will depend on your account info
do you have the protection plan?
when was your last upgrade?
are you under contract?

the protection plan is what gives the free upgrade every 2 years

otherwise its a crapshoot, you may or may not get it.

sometimes offering to cancel gets it

If you will only want 4k on one tv, don't even consider the HS17. You are forced to use clients exclusively, no other dvrs allowed. If it goes down, you are sol until it's replaced. Go with the HR54.

Plenty of reasons to go client only, including more DVR space. It's the what if's of the what if's. I have never had mine go down. If it did go down, usually they will overnight you one or have a tech at your place the next day.

That's completely backwards. You have to use the HS17 only. How does that equate to more dvr space?

Last time I looked an HR54 had 1TB hard drive, and an HS17 has a 2tb hard drive. I don't know about you but it's basic math as 2 is greater than 1! It's not a step backward except in the eyes of those who won't try it. It's not really that much of a big deal unless you're doing the RV thing.

the op has an hr24
thats 50 extra timers
and an h24

going an hs17 would be a downgrade

HR 24 cant do 4K.. OP is going 4K. Not a step backward... He's moving forward..

and simply replacing the hr44 with an hr54 and changing the c41 to a c61k is the best for his current setup imho.
current/hr54 150 timers, 8 tuners 1.5tb, 1 mini, 4 recordings and 4 live tv
hs17 100 timers, 7 tuners, 2tb, 4 minis, 4 minis, 3 recording and 4 live tv

overall a downgrade, less timers, less tuners, less recordings

Not everyone needs or wants 150 timers.. That 1.5TB hard drive is inaccurate. It's only 1.0TB usable to the user. It all pretty much equals out in the end as he's losing one tuner for additional hard drive space. That may be sufficient for the OP. Just because you have something against the HS17, please do us all a favor don't deter others from using a great product just because you personally think it's a downgrade in your eyes.

An external hard drive on an HR54 makes your argument invalid.

but 150 is greater than 100
hr24 - 500mb hd
hr54 1tb hd
thats a total of 1.5tb

I personally would go with the HS17 over a 54. Mine has been solid since getting it. I have had it for over a year.
I would go the other way, get the HR54 and a client and KEEP the HR24.

You now have more tuners available to you and if anything should happen with the HR54/HS17, you still have TV with the HR24.

IF you go the HS17 route you have to give up all your existing recvrs ... are you readu for that ?

With the HR54 you can keep the recvrs you may want.

HR24's probably won't be supported in the future... so take that gamble as well... The H/HR series is coming up to end of life. HS17 will be supported for the foreseeable future.
