Just to make it easier to find what the actual price will be to get the Hopper system I reposted this here. It lists what your cost would be if you're a New or Existing customer.

New customers pay a $99 fee to get the Hopper and up to three Joeys.
If the new customer subscribes to the AT200 or higher, that fee is credited back.
If the new customer would like a second Hopper, they would have to pay a $199 upgrade fee.

Existing customers will Have to pay $100 for the fist Hopper and $100 for the second Hopper.
Customers that are not in good standing or have recently signed up will have to pay $200 for the first Hopper and $200 for the second Hopper.
Existing customers will be able to get up to three Joeys for $0.
Existing customers that are not in good standing with Dish will have to pay $100 for each Joey they want.
Existing customers may also have to pay the technician visit fee of $15 or $95.

I hope this clears things up for everyone. Let me know if I have any known mistakes.

If one has the protection plan, would that cover the tech visit?

TIA for your answer.
I don't believe official info has been posted on the tech visit fee or the length of the commitment for existing customers. Mostly assumptions based on what they've done before.

Correct. They have not officially said anything about commitments or the tech visit fees. They did describe the upgrades in their typical upgrade format though.

Based on how the Dish'N It Up promo works now, the customer would pay the appropriate upgrade fee along with the tech visit fee. The customer would also have to renew a 24 month commitment. I can't see Dish straying away from this at all.

In the ~3 years that I've had Dish, I have not upgraded. Do they add the fees to your next bill, collect during the install visit, or charge in advance? TIA

The upgrade fees would be charged up front. The programming fees would be prorated on your current bill.

In order to get the $15 visit, how long do you have to be on the Protection Plan, before and after installation?

I think you can add it right before you schedule the service. I believe you are suppose to keep it a minimum of four months or you would be charged a $25 drop fee.

Just a note, that if you add it and call a retailer, do not expect them to do it for $15. We do not play by those rules. We only do DHPP calls if the customer bought their Dish from us.

I've always gone through Dish directly. In the 14+ years I've been with Dish, I think the only times I've ever had a tech visit was to upgrade my dishs from the original single dish to the 500, to the wing dish and then to the 1k4. To upgrade my system to the 211/722 and most recently to repoint my dish after a roofing job.

1 minute unless they've changed it. But remember its $15 + approx $30. There is a cancel fee on the plan if you've have the protection plan less than 6 months (I think - it may be 5 months).

I'll probably add on the plan vs paying up front and cancel after the window.

EDIT: Just checked the Dish site the PP etf is $25 if cancelled within 5 months of adding.

10 years for me, 3 tech visits...signal problem from a retailer's poor install job...Dishmover...Dish 'n Up to HD.

What do they consider "recently signed up"? I'll be on a year in March.

I really have no idea how recent. They have so many factors on how they qualify their customers and they don't tell anyone including retailers. The only way you'll know what you'd have to pay is if you ask dish or you have to give a retailer your info and they could tell you. See if one of the dirt members can tell you.

Do you have to have a tech set this up for you? I have a VIP722 now so the wiring should all be in place. I only want a hopper, no joeys. I'm capable of connecting the thing myself and setting it up.

So I am off contract, even paid the $99 to get Free HD for Life so I didn't have to sign a contract. Do I have to sign a contract again with the $100 upgrade fee or is there a price where I don't have to sign a contract?

You will need a technician to install it for you if you are getting under a promotion. If you purchase everything you can install it yourself.

If you are getting it through the upgrade promotion you will have to renew a contract. If you want to avoid the contract you will have to purchase the equipment.

Yes, they want to send a tech. And it's not wired the same as the ViPs. For a single unit, close, but not quite the same.

May I ask- Why would you want a Hopper for a single TV? Your bill will be the same, and you'll be paying up front yet gain no additional TV capability. And at least for a short time, you'll lose OTA. Is the Guide, UI, extra tuner & PTAT as a whole the big draw? Or is a single feature of prime interest?
