DISH Reaches Long Term Agreement with DISNEY / ESPN / ABC

I believe they have agreed to stand back to back, take twelve steps, turn and fire! It will be sad to see this thread die. ;)

Well it may be a bit though before deal is done so we may have a few posts left :)

From the article:

The big obstacle, it is now apparent, is the battle over Dish’s high-tech DVR called the Hopper, and in particular its AutoHop feature.

AutoHop is dead. The courts may not outlaw it, but none of the networks are going to sign a retrans with Dish without either disabling AutoHop or getting enormous increases in rates. Disney/ABC is just the first battle, we will see this again when Fox / CBS / NBC come up for renewal.

I am afraid you are right. Even though most people with dvrs skip commercials anyway ,regardless whether they have a hopper or not , the networks are still holding on to the old commercial model from the 50's. They won't renew their contract without killing the auto hop feature.

Mark my words on this.Autohop is not dead,Charlie will drop Disney before he kills autohop.

Well, the locals stations still make the vast majority of their revenue from ads, so I can understand how they will attack technology that will impact their ad revenue. The alternative is for the locals to start charging $3-$5 per channel to make up for the lost revenue from AutoHop - and say hello to paying $25/mo for your locals. (Also, not sure how else locals are going to be able to make the money to pay their costs - what new model can they move to?)

If Charlie drops Disney / ABC / ESPN I am gone, and won't give it a second thought. And I don't think I am the only one.

And if Disney-ABC-ESPN goes that means all the Fox-FX-FSN / NBC-Comcast / CBS-Viacom stations will follow. I don't Dish is viable anymore if that happens.

I see your point.

But I wonder if it results in monthly bills $5-$10 lower than the competition, would that over the long haul more than make up for it? High stakes game to find out.

If anybody here with a Hopper remembers when they upgraded, and if the CSR did their job, the disclosures read to you mention that the AutoHop is "subject to availability", and that language has been there. I think Dish has known all along that it could be a dealbreaker.

Next up: How stubborn is Charlie? Would be ever admit defeat?

Question to Hopper users: Would you give up AutoHop to keep your stations? I can tell you, people have and do call in when they say their AutoHop isn't working properly, and they're having to see commercials. People do like the technology.

When my Hopper was installed, Autohop wasn't invented yet. :) That said, I like Autohop, but if it went away, I still remember how to use skip forward. In fact I use that often because most of my viewing is on channels other than the Big 4....

I think it's a pretty awesome feature but not a deal breaker. Now, if it was available on all channels then I would really miss it.

I upgraded the day it was released so Autohop wasn't available yet.

Same when I upgraded to Hopper AutoHop didn't exist. I don't watch network TV or use PTAT often enough to miss it if it were disabled. The fact that I don't use PTAT often at all is one of several reasons I have four Hoppers.

I like it but wouldn't miss it. The hopper is such a fantastic DVR that auto hopping over commercials seems like a small feature compared to the whole package.

I enjoy the feature, but if for some reason if it was gone it would just take sometime getting back to 30 second skip for locals
