What does a cross box look like. I remember you posted a pic a while back but I can't find it.

Took a few pics today of the equipment thats popping up around where I live. Can some on tell me what these are?

In your second picture the box on the left is a VRAD for Uverse, the box on the right is a cross connect box IIRC.

Cross connect box is basically just a big patch panel where the punch down a bunch if inividual lines from the homes/business into other lines that go back to the central office. Is usually has no electronics in it. They have nothing to do with DSL service. Before UVerse there was Pronto where they were installing remote terminals which had remote DSLAM's (what provides DSL service) in them which took care of the copper distance limitation of ADSL service, those boxes look similar to the large box in your picture.

IIRC = short hand for If I Remember Correctly.

The big box on the left has power to it. It has it's own power meter. There are fans operating on it and at the bottom it has an area marked "battery tray." So it is a poosability that it could be for DSL? I hope.

Ok. So it's just over a half mile. So that means that to cover a whole town, they would need a butt load of vrads right? Any word if that distance would increase in the future?

So far ( in our town ) , SBC / AT&T has installed 40 of them in 2005 & 40 of them in 2006 . So far they ate putting them in the high dollar parts of town .

Within the last month or so they installed one of those powered boxes within a 1/2 mile of my house, although at last look it has not been powered up yet. I am now guessing it is for U-VERSE, as we have had DSL for a number of years.

The A in ADSL is for "Asymmetrical". Download has higher bandwidth than upload. Generally, when one refers to residential DSL service, you are referring to ADSL.

Symmetrical DSL is much more expensive, and is normally used for business.

On one road the phone company has placed a box every 1/8 of a mile. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Just in case it helps I live in Waterford CT.
