Officially it's Day 1 of the Viacom Blackout on DirecTV (I hate to say this). For now, no more Degrassi and the Miriam McDonald era reruns, plus no more Wendy Williams on BET since it's not showing at all in first run syndication in Greenville, SC unfortunately. It's a repeat of rival Dish's 2004 dispute with them, I hate to say this. 7/11/2012 is the day Viacom made kids cry in tears because they miss watching reruns of SpongeBob, iCarly, Victorious, Big Time Rush, and etc. Plus me also missing an all new episode of The Soul Man on TV Land tonight. I wish stupid congress and the FCC would do something with this madness. This has gone too far.

I'm upset Viacommies hold Degrassi and The Soul Man hostage from now on. :(
this almost sounds like a good thing

I don't what I'm gonna do without Degrassi or The Soul Man. Unfortunately, Northland Cable (the cable company in my town) don't carry TeenNick. I'm not going back to E* because what they did to AMC :(

I would "move" to the place that has those on broadcast.

I hope DTV sticks to their guns, which they won't (they never do). Viacom, FOX, Comcast/NBC, Disney/ABC/ESPN, CBS, AMC Networks, et al are killing the pay TV industry by holding consumers hostage and running roughshod over MVPDs without any FCC restraint. Worse yet, they expect MVPDs to pay more and more for their increasingly devalued programming which they readily (and in many cases freely) make available via various online portals as early as the next day.

Here's their argument "Pay us more while we undercut your business model, force you to carry more meaningless channels providing more mindless programming, and hey - your consumers can't live without Jersey Shore, Sponge Bob, Fairly Odd Parents, MTV without music, yada, yada, yada ...."

Ironically, these are the same networks screaming at DISH for supposedly ruining their profit model (i.e. Auto-Hop) when the reality is they've been shooting themselves in the foot all along.

IMO, content providers pulling there channels in disputes like this is going to start to backfire on them. As seen in this thread, after Viacom pulled their 20 some channels from DirecTV, many subs voice how they really don't care that much that they're gone. Once you don't have certain channels, for the most part, you can accept it because so much junk are on these channels. The "Viacoms" and others are "devaluing" their own channels by pulling them and letting people realize they don't miss them. The only upsetting factor for the subs is not seeing a reduction in their monthly bill.

I know all hell was raised at Dish because of dropping the AMC channels, but if it hadn't been for AMC original programing being some of the best programs on TV, would Dish subs have made such an uproar? Take away AMC 5 hit series, and there wasn't much left on the channel. And with Dish giving away the Roku boxes, they are kind of saying, " Hey, AMC has their programing online to stream, so here you go, pick and pay for what you want to see of theirs." In a way, it a twist on ala cart.

I wonder if DirecTV during this time will add some new channels. BBC America HD? The return of G4? It this lasts awhile or as long as the NBC Sports Network blackout(10 months?)

I've finally did something. I've sent a e-mail about the Viacom dispute to my Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC 3rd District). I agree with DirecTV said that 30% increase is unfair. I've told my Congressman to urged Congress to do something about this important issue. I've mentioned my favorites shows as well. What the world has gone up to??? Just like Barry McGuire said in his 1965 hit "Ah, You don't believe, we're on The Eve of Destruction." :(

Condolences for the recent Viacom bull. Hopefully it gets resolved quickly.
If someone's kid is "throwing a hysterical fit" over losing a television channel then I think that parent has serious issues to deal with.
You should have seen the "adults" in the AMC thread in the Dish forum! ;)

The one thing about this dispute with Viacom that really upsets me, is the fact that Viacom is deleting any posts on their FB page, and other places that they can, when a post supports DirecTV. Not only is that immature, but I think very unprofessional. After all we don't live in China. If Viacom doesn't agree with a post, then challenge it with facts, don't just delete it. Let all comments be seen. Grow up Viacom! You're telling everyone it's Directv fault, not yours, but you won't let out any facts to back this up with.

With so many channels being removed maybe, just maybe this starts some kind of discussion on the future costs of programming and how the current set up may lead the consumer to one day say enough is enough?
