According to kotaku.com, Sony Play Station 3 is expected to support resolution of up to 1080p! It is not clear, however, whether this only applies to games, or to BD movies too. In a survey for gamers Sony stated the following:

The PlayStation®3 will include BluRay™, the high definition DVD technology, and support games in resolutions of up to 1080p, (the highest supported standard on the market.)

What a BS. "Highest supported standard on the market" - there's no such thing as "standard", let alone that most of the PC games scales up 1920 or higher since ages.

PS: Ilya, it seems to me clear that Sony was talking about games here.

1080p what? 1080p/24, 1080p/30, 1080p/60, 1080p/29.97, 1080p/59.97, etc and how is it going to output it? HDMI? HDMI 1.1 only talks about 1080p/24 as a "recommendation" but 1080p via HDMI has not been standardized yet. it should with the HDMI 2.0 spec, and looking at the delays on B-ray and the PS-3, maybe it will be standardized by then ;)

What does this have to do with PC games? They are talking about video (console) games, not PC games.

It is clear (from that Sony's statement) that PS3 will be able to display games in 1080p. It is not clear, however, whether it will be able to display movies in 1080p.

Here is my own take on this: if the console is capable of outputting 1080p (as stated) and since all BD decoding in the console is likely done in software (not in any dedicated hardware decoders), then theoretically it should be technically possible to do 1080p for BD video without any additional hardware. The only question is whether the CPU is fast enough to do BD decoding in full 1080p.

Gaming. It's one market. And still no 'standards' exist.

1. Supposedly the NV-designed gfx chip should take care of mpeg4 acceleration. Unfortunately it's far from that yet.

2. Because of this, they will use MPEG2 motly, at least in the firt few months.

3. Becaue of that they will need more space.

4. Because of things all above and the fact that dual layer BD-ROM won't be available before end of the summer en masse, it's unlikely they would puh any 1080p before the Fall.
