For the record, I don't really "care" what it's tranmitted at. If it's at the level that the existing HD stuff is at now, I'd be fine with it. I am not the picky.
It was just a curiosty and I talk about sat to a lot of guys at work and some of them ask so I thought I'd look for the answer.

ummmm fios uses mpeg 2 compression and d* uses mpeg 4..by definition mpeg 4 compresses alot more than mpeg 2

If this is the case why has D* not put a press release to blow the competition away. I mean isn't it in their best interest to advertize this information?
I forgot that they never said that they were sending a signal below 1920x1080i! They always boasted that they had the best signal in the industry. I really hope that they have done so but I think I will wait for some numbers (from an independent source) to back up this claim.
Is your friend a D* source or an independent source? Can the numbers of resolution and bitrates be posted?
Can you find out Why are the MPEG-2 channels like HDnet, HDnet Movies, Showtime HD still in HD Lite mode?
Which means it requires less bandwidth to achieve the SAME PQ, which is what's really important.

They have been advertising these channels for close to 2 years. Maybe their ad should say "well, we have been claiming to have 100 HD channels for 18 months, now we actually have stuff out there."
I am glad for the DirecTV folks. And it should soon mean more HD for us Dish folk too.
Give them time, they just got them up today. They still have some tweeking to do before it's perfect. But for what they have now, its the best HD I have seen in a long long time.
He didnt claim the compression was less than Fios, he claimed the PQ was up to par and has VERY LITTLE compression.
Its the best I have seen anywhere on any service period. I have friends with E*, Comcast, charter and FIOS... I have not seen a better picture than what I am getting right now with these new channels. It is my own claim that I have very "picky" eyes, and I easily notice imperfections in video... I am havinga hard time seeing any right now on these new channels.
I honestly thought I needed to get a new TV, and that my three year old sony Rear Projection was not giving me the best picture anymore. Well... I am holding off on buying a plasma for a while! My new dilema is what to do with the SD Sony TV I have in our main living room. Even my wife said with these new channels, that television will not get used as much. She actually will be battling me to use my television! I may need to get a 32" or 37" LCD for her upstairs!
Not you Scott, but some people where claiming the same when D* was doing HD Lite on their MPEG-2 channels. If you could get information from your friend about the numbers in the stream, it will, once and for all, prove that D* is serious about having the best PQ in the industry. Until them (sorry Scott because I know you work hard on getting information) it is based on subjective rather than objective data. Everyone's subjectivity is different and it comes in different levels of PQ and colors.
I don't know -- maybe its the new "girl-friend" feeling BUT I don't care if these new channels are being done in HD-Lite or over compresion!
Why? well to me an my Sony A2000 60" TV they look KILLER! Now if D* starts to overload the bird with more channels - then I'll care

I'm going to ask for a DirecTV tech to come out and insure the disk is aligned for the new channels ... then all should be perfect.
FYI: 35 miles east of LA and receive all LA HDTV channels with perfection.

Are you saying local OTA HD channels are better than the DirecTV channels? Or local HD on D* looks better than the new DirecTV channels?
Just curious, as I have seen multiple issues with my locals (OTA or otherwise), and I think the new channels might actually be better, at least in some cases, but maybe your local transmissions are better than mine...
While I understand your point, sometimes people get too wrapped up in the numbers and don't enjoy what they have. If the PQ looks good to you then why worry all the time about the number. Just my two cents

You are right. D* is not going to point out the improvement because that would be an admission that the images were deficient before. It also leaves them free to reduce the quality if they ever feel the need.
The MPEG-2s we always had are still coming from the same bandwidth-starved satellites.
I have been at work since 5:30AM and have no idea what they look like, but most people seem happy. I hope they keep the quality up as they continue to add channels.
622 and hr20
Hey Scott,
I have both Dish and direc. They both are very close in picture quality but I do give an edge to Dish. It just appears sharper.
Also, do you notice that the sound out of the 622 is louder than the hr20.
I have to push the volume up pretty high on the HR20 to match the 622.
I have compared four units I have in my house. Its the same all over.
Oh well.
Nice to see Hd all over the place though.
Still waiting for Sci fi and chiller in HD- Hoping it will happen soon.

I don't have a clue what PQ is or what any of the rest of the tech talk is but it's interesting and I'm learning a lot. I'm just a consumer. I signed up for Direct TV specifically for the promised land of HD and because Dish didn't carry my locals in HD, and I'm pretty happy today. Love CNN in HD! I haven't spent a lot of time looking around yet, but what I see looks awesome. I finally get to use this tv for what it was intended.
