SkyAngel Plans Move to IPTV

I downloaded a TBN player to my computer tonight that gives me one-click access to five TBN channels - TBN, Church Channel, Smile of a Child, JCTV, and Enlace. It includes a program guide, favorites, reminders, and some archive programs.

Well

At least they finally said they are discontinuing DBS. Still a lot of unanswered questions.

I love the part where they say 70% of their subscribers have high speed. Sorry but NO WAY that is true. They are more than double the national average for high speed availability? Maybe the monthy viewer survey panel had 70% but that is a highly flawed survey. All monthly survey members have internet........

I have a hard time believing that 70% of their subscribers have high speed internet either. Heck they dont even know all the lifetime subscribers have their service and I bet the majority of those dont have access to high speed internet, let alone have it. Maybe they figure there would be enough lifetime subscribers that they would gain to their subscription service to make up for a lot of the customers they would lose that does not have access to the internet.

Just like an earlier thread stated - a lot of people want to watch it on their television, not on the computer screen. Maybe they have a kit that allows you to watch it on the tv screen. Who is going to pay for that though? Its a forced upgrade so they should be the ones paying for it.

I don't think it really matters who has high speed Internet. I believe they were going under and this is a desperate grasp to stay alive....

Question for you all..I am a lifelong subscriber but have outdated equipment. I was thinking of purchasing an upgraded receiver but I would think your advice would be - "no"?

I also wonder about how they are going to treat us "lifers." Are we to be "phased out?" And, if we are allowed to stay on with this new system, how much would the "Set-top" box cost?

new box?

Unless you plan on subscribing to dish do NOT upgrade. box will be useless shortly for sky angel :(

canada is $24.99 a month, box is $119-$179(hard wire or wireless) per tv PLUS you need a router and high speed internet and appropriate cables. They will now throw in internet viewing for free! There was an activation fee but it is currently waived. I would expect something similar for US.

As it stands now lifetime members will NOT be transferred to IPTV. They will let us subscribe like everyone else! Supposedly some sort of offer will be made to lifetime members.............

here is the Canadian channel line up, not impressive. Definitely not worth additional monthly fee and equipment purchase.

Okay, here's where I'm arriving in my thinking. The situation is what it is. I don't necessarily agree that abandoning the satellite and going to IPTV goes against Bob Sr.'s dream. Just maybe Bob Sr. would agree in 2007 that satellite service needed to be discontinued and that the new IPTV technology that didn't even exist in his lifetime was a good option for this time. I think it has been tough for DirecTV and Dish to succeed in the satellite market -- it is probably just too expensive for a small provider like SA to make it long-term in the satellite biz. I've expected for some time that SA would end its service.

It is most unfortunate that some will not be able to subscribe to IPTV. And it is very possible SA will try the new platform and fail and anyone who jumps on-board at the beginning will lose the investment in equipment. But, again, it is what it is. The consumer decides if it is worth the risk. I truly don't think SA had much choice about throwing in the towel on the satellite service -- it was inevitable.

I spend more than $130/mo. on cable and high-speed Internet. I know many can't do that. I retired in May and looked forward to SA being an important part of my days at home. Without it, I would fight the temptation to waste time on cable TV. With it, I can choose to be fed by God's Word all day long. I know many cannot afford high-speed Internet and the equipment/monthly fee for IPTV. I do know that a coworker who lives way out in the boondocks told me that there are options for high-speed for people who live in rural areas -- but they are more expensive. I am weighing the option of reducing the $$ I spend on secular cable and putting those dollars on SA. I have not made a decision yet. Frankly, I am a tecchie and enjoy trying out new technology.

I have spent considerable time finding out what I can do to replace SA without IPTV. Truthfully, I can, for the most part -- but I do need my high-speed Internet to do it. I recognize that subscribing to SA IPTV (for me) isn't so much about what channels I can get - I can get most of them on-line. It is about convenience, consolidation, being able to control what I watch (or listen to on radio) and when I watch/listen to it. I tried out TBN's on-line player last night and loved having one-click access to their channels, program guides, favorites, etc. THAT is what I would be paying for if I chose the IPTV box (or even just having it on my computer, which I believe will be an option - would not need to buy a box to do that). I know myself well enough to know that I would be lazy about accessing programming if I had to go to my computer and click-click-click every time I wanted to access a program.

Years ago, my husband, a pharmacist, lost a long-time job when the retail store he'd worked at for many years closed. He spent days moping and saying he wanted things to be the way they were. Once he accepted that he no longer had that option, he went on to land the very best job he ever had.

It is what it is. And maybe what it is will turn out to be okay. I don't mean to come across as unsympathetic to those who can't do the IPTV. But if I can, who loses if I choose not to just because I am angry? Hopefully, those of you who can't do SA will go to Glorystar and find it wonderful. Or if you do have high-speed Internet, you can view a lot of content free on-line.

sorry, need to disagree

Bob Sr was VERY clear about his vision. it included the angel from the SKy, hence the name and included bringing Gods word to RURAL areas that wouldn't receive it. IPTV is the opposite, only those in urban areas with high speed internet will be able to view Sky Angel

WOW, they did take it all down!

All those questions and answers are gone! Now everything is generic. did anyone think to copy them ? If so please post them :)
I would venture to say that Sky Angel is monitoring the boards and finding our feedback less than favorable!

It's too bad, 'cuz what they had on earlier really did address some of the issues.

I'm glad I am not the only one who viewed the earlier version today . . . I'd kinda wonder about myself if no one else had seen it.

The questions were pretty much the topics we discuss here: Why they're abandoning DBS, when the changeover will take place (1st quarter of 2008), etc. The FAQs were pretty comprehensive, so they know what customers want to know. They answered many of the questions by stating they don't know yet and will inform subscribers via newsletters like the one we all recently received via snail mail. They did indicate they won't just pull the plug -- they will inform subscribers via a mailing beforehand.

Guess someone picked up the wrong copy - they weren't supposed to post that yet.

I read the more detailed FAQ also - and I don't know why SA* took it down. It was the most honest explanation I have read in any official document from SA* of the entire situation.

I was happy that SA* had finally decided to start being a little more up front and forthright, rather than provide vague generalities.

So much for that. :(

For now I am receiving several channels from AMC-4 that are sent in the clear. There are three English and two spanish channels and three "radio" stations that have a mix of conservative music and Bible studies.
I guess that will have to suffice if SA* is no longer going to be available.

I checked my snail mail the other day (I don't do it enough) and had a piece of mail from skyangel in it had a brochure talking about IPTV but nothing beyond what already was posted on this site and their site about it coming soon.. no channel line up,costs, or nothing saying "DBS is going away in the near future"

I am not sure which ones you are referring to, but the link had a lot of questions and answers when I just looked.

Perhaps everything isn't a grand conspiracy by SkyAngel.... :)
