Hi guys,

I live in Florida, and I want to subscribe to Directv and add it to all 5 of my TVs in my house. However, I want to use a NJ address so that I can get the NY area broadcasts. From what I have read, I know that this can work, however, I have a few questions about it:

1. Do I also need to have a NJ phone number?

2. If #1 is yes, then what about making my phone "private" so they can't see the ID.

3. If order everything directly from directv, and use my real Florida address, can I call them 2 months later and tell them that I am moving to NJ? I want this mainly for Baseball, so I can wait till April.

4. When I "move", can I "install" it myself, or will they want to send an installer to "verify" that I realy moved?

5. Last question, I see tons of ebay auctions selling receivers, etc. Can I buy one of these used or new ones and ask DTV to activate it on my account without problems?

I would prefer to buy everything from DTV since they have right now a good promotion on their website and they give free installation. If anyone has any other suggestions on how to do what I want, I would really appreciate it.

What you want to do is against the terms of service of the contract you must agree to.

Now that the little local network do-gooder nanny's chimed in, the theiving OOM network viewer can talk... :D  :p

Do be aware you will ONLY get the big 4 nets - you will NOT get the other locals/networks, such as CW, MTN, PBS, etc, since they are on spotbeams. Also, you will NOT get your "real" RSN's down in FL, but instead you'll get whatever RSN's you would get up in NJ.

1. Do I also need to have a NJ phone number?
No, doesn't matter

2. If #1 is yes, then what about making my phone "private" so they can't see the ID.
YOU can't block to an 800#; doesn't matter anyway, you don't need a phone line anyway

3. If order everything directly from directv, and use my real Florida address, can I call them 2 months later and tell them that I am moving to NJ? I want this mainly for Baseball, so I can wait till April.
Yep, others have done this

4. When I "move", can I "install" it myself, or will they want to send an installer to "verify" that I realy moved?
If you mean will they send someone out after you call in to "move", no - they'll just change it & be done with it

5. Last question, I see tons of ebay auctions selling receivers, etc. Can I buy one of these used or new ones and ask DTV to activate it on my account without problems?

You MUST have at least 1 new receiver for activation - D* will NOT let you activate a used receiver for a new account

Have them install it all in FL, move later

DSRICH,
Thank you for your real world answer!
I appreciate you addressing my individual questions, you have helped me a lot!

To you other guys,
I can see where stealing service is a problem, but I am not trying to steal anything. These baseball blackouts are rediculous. I am a Yankee fan that grew up in NY area, and I want to see the Yankees on TV. I don't care about the Marlins or Devil Rays, and I also will not watch Fox's Saturday game of the week that they force down my throught and blackout the game that I want to watch.
I could even accept if I could PAY EXTRA to watch the games, but I can't!! The MLB package still has blackouts on the weekend because they expect "baseball fans" to watch the National Games of the Week. I don't care about them! Even for extra $$$ they still blackout the weekend games.
Furthermore, I like listening to the Yankee broadcasters and not the other team's broadcasters.

There are tons of people willing to pay money for this. Where I am now in Southern Florida, half the people here are originally from NY and NJ and would much rather see the NY Teams than the FL teams.

Happy New Year

Actually some addresses now(?) qualify for CW and PBS, e.g., JACKMAN, ME 04945. That's where I "moved" to and I added the CW. ;)

NOT if he moves to an address in the NY DMA, since he WOULD legitimately & automatically get those nets IN NYC.
He can't move to where you suggest (a white area) since it appears he wants baseball from the NY RSN's... ;) ;)

No prob, us movers have to stick together... :D ;) :D

Hi Guys,
I am not even sure what an RSN is/ As for the other local stuff like CW, etc, wouldn't I get the NJ/NY ones?
Not that I really care because I also have local cable TV that I get free from the private community association that I live in.

What does RSN stand for and what is a spotbeam?

I never said anything about you stealing service. I said it's against the terms of service of the contract. I am not going to promote that. Dishrich, bite me.

There is nothing dishonest about it. Nobody is being stolen from, losing anything, or being cheated.

When you agree to a contract and it's terms of service, and then violate them intentionally, to me that is dishonest. If you are okay with it, good for you then.

If there is nothing wrong with what you want to do why not just call DirecTV and ask them to answer your questions for what you want to do?;)

What does RSN stand for and what is a spotbeam?

All local channels are on spotbeams, which only reach a small area - understand they were ONLY intended to cover the local broadcast channel area that your local stations cover. When you physically move too far away, your dish will NOT be able to see those beams, hence you will not be able to get those local channels.
That is the reason why you will NOT get the other NY locals - & the ONLY reason why you can get the big 4, is because they are on CONUS (full US coverage) beams, because they are also used for distant network service.

An RSN are those regional sports networks, such as MSG, FSN, Comcast Sports, etc. that are normally available only in that particular market. In NY, those would be FSN NY, MSG, YES & Sportsnet NY. And those are what you are going to need to get to see all your baseball games that you are avoiding paying for MLB season pass down in FL. But they are NOT on spotbeams, as those same feeds ARE also used on the MLB pkg.

Actually, the address that I want to use in NJ is only about 10 miles away from NYC, so maybe I will get the local spotbeams?

For you high horse guys, why did you even reply to my original post? All I asked was for some info on the subject. If you don't like what I am doing, then don't bother replying. But don't reply trying to teach me morals.

Sure it is against the rules, and guess what, I really don't give a damn. I don't like being punished for living in FL. I won't be able to get my local FL channels anymore. So what's the difference where I am physically located.

Slingbox basically accomplishes the same thing. Does that bother you too?

No, no, no - it's because you are PHSICALLY going to BE down in FL - the NY spotbeams will NOT reach THAT far away from NY. If you are actually IN NJ, they would - see the difference???

So you don't like a rule, that makes it ok to not follw that rule.
oook. I don't like driving 65 on the interstate. I get to drive 100MPH now by your logic.
You made an agreement and are not going to follow it because it doesn't suit you. I got it.
enjoy.

And if you don't like that you are going to get everyone's thoughts on what you are asking, don't post.

dishrich,
Thanks, I understand now what you mean. Basically my dish actually directly receives the signal. It does not receive it from directtv's satellite. No biggie. Will I then be able to receive the florida local spotbeams? Or does directv block me from that because they think I am in NJ?

Mkatts,
Great example. I am sure that you NEVER have driven even 1MPH over the speed limit right? Of course you have. If you drive 5 to 10 MPH over the speed limit, it is usually considered ok. So who gets to decide how much of breaking a rule is ok and how much isn't? Granted 100MPH is not reasonable, and 70MPH is, but who decides? You the driver do.

I think that telling them that I live elsewhere is reasonable. I am not trying to steal by getting both FL and NY channels, just getting NY instead of FL. I think that is reasonable.

As for my post, I asked a technical question on how to do it, not who thinks it is morally acceptable or not. So answer my post, don't stick your hypocritical morals on me. Once you drive even 1 MPH over the speed limit, then you are no different. Stop being naive.
