can i get them to lower my deposit?

I am trying to resign up for directv and they want an $400 deposit for the hd dvr receiver and for a new account. How can I get them to lower the deposit? Could just getting a hd receiver lower the deposit? Also can the hd receivers do on-demand or just the hd dvrs?

I thought the going rate was $199 for an HD-DVR, but maybe that's not the case for new customers. That's for just one HD-DVR and no other receivers?

And it's not a "deposit" - a deposit implies you will get your money back. Whatever you pay them up-front is theirs to keep.

Sometimes D* does require a deposit based upon the subscriber's credit rating. It could also be affected by the conditions under which the OP left D* the first time (such as breaking contract early, failing to return equipment, etc... (not that I'm saying that is the case in this thread)).

I thought I remember seeing somewhere that the deposit was slowly given back in monthly credits if it's required. I thought I remember seeing that when I signed up. (I didn't have to give a deposit, but I thought I saw it.)

And to answer the second question. Only the DVR receivers will do On Demand. The show has to be recorded.

But DirecTV can still require a deposit when the OP tries to sign up. A deposit implies the money will be refunded in one way or another. If all possible get the HDDVR because it sounded you want such service.

The last thing you want is trying to save a bit of money, get a service you don't like at all, and try to get money back by breaking the contract, the cycle starts over again. Might as well pay a little more upfront, be satisfied with the service so you want to keep it and as a result will get the depost back over time.

I think only the HR2x HDDVR's can do VOD. But I guess I still can't answer your original question. Why not call them to find out?

Those are leases and you can get the HR2x units at Costco for 169.

I am not sure, even if you get it from Costco, it may require you some kinda deposit to activate your service (when they run your credit check), I may be wrong, but you never know..

Directv does not require a deposit or activation fee for returning customers. They may require a credit card be placed on file.

Also a HDDVR would at the most cost you $199. The only way I could see you getting charged $400 to return is if you want additional equipment or your account wasn't completely settled when you left.

Have a novel idea on how to get around the deposit, pay the bill off that you owe from before.

Am honestly surprised that they will even talk to you about service at any price with an outstanding balance of that amount. This info explains a lot of things and yes, they will want an assurance that you will pay the existing balance and any new ones before they allow you to connect to their service. They ARE a for-profit business, after all.

i'm not paying the $1000 I already told them that numerous times. I'll pay the $400 in 3 weeks though.
