That is because, if you believe Nagravision, that a competitor to them released information that compromised Dish's Conditional Access System.

This resulted Dish encryption to hacked much more easily.

For all the other people though, Local channels is where they get the majority of their programming, so they want their Locals, and don't care about National Channels.
DISH has more than enough national HD channels to compete with any terrestrial carrier. They desperately need locals to be a serious alternative to CATV.

That being said, they still need to throw their loyal customers a national HD bone once in a while. Even the D* natives are getting restless about not having any new national HD offerings in a while.
 
I personally would be surprised if at least Sci-fi was not up by the end of the month. I can't see another reason to have the girl from BSG on the Charlie Chat.

If we get that and USA I will be a happy camper for some time.
 
All good news to me. For the guys worried about the xtra channels D* has, dont sweat most of them too much because I have them now and they are about as useful as A&E was a year ago. Not very.

Dish has room on 129, a lot of room in fact. 12 TPs are free at this time according to "The List" SatelliteGuys.US - Subscription 129°W

It is just a matter of how much power they think they have to light up more TPs. In theory E5 can do all 32TPs on low power and 16 on high power. They are using more than 16.

Are those 12 TP's new or they have always been there? You mean the reason they are not on may have to do with not having enough power to light them up? That would be a brand new theory. In the past it had always been that they ran out of bandwidth, even though some had always believed they had at least one or two more TP's could be used but to say 12 unused TP's is quite a leap for me.

Not until most recently did I hear the naming of the 25 new national HD's and the plan to add them in spring at least most of them, and if they do so the new ones will be in the $29.99 HD-only pack, so I was told, regardless if AM-14 is alive or dead. That seems to scream at your explanation very loudly.

And I certainly hope so, becasue if they can add even half of those 25 new ones, and include them in the $29.99 pack, I will add DISH back in since I do miss a few VOOM channels a little, not much but $29.99 is low enought to justify the addition and be my way of saying way to go Charlie to introduce this HD-only concept.

Except that I don't have no F$%^&* way to see 61.5, nor do many folks like me on the left coast, if you happen to live on a flat ground with houses 20 yards to your east. Not to mention most houses in the big cities are next to each other.

Yet while everyone is talking and excited about 61.5, you must understand how we feel! Charlie had made absolutely no mentioning of how he is going to let us see the new HD channels. He is feeding the frenzy as if in less than a month DISH will again be the leader of HD.

Who does he think we are on this side of the coast? A bunch of idiots?
 
129 is using 24 of the 32 TPs.

61.5 is using all 28 of the 28 available TPs (4 are out). The hold up is on 61.5. Now TPs 1,3,5,7,9,11,13 and 15 are emptied of available programming. They are being transitioned to spot beam. Once the spot beams get turned on 61.5 they will have 2 TPs free up: 17 and 21 since NY and Boston can move to spot beams on 1-15odd. They also have 2 more TPs free up in 11 days from Sky Angel. So 4 more TPs in the next couple weeks will give them the room they need for HD.

The delay in HD looks to be waiting for the spot beams to be turned on. They had to clear out all the TPs. Since USA & SciFi are on 110, they were not waiting on the spots. The spot beams were probably waiting on all the uplink centers to get ready... Fiber from the DMAs to the uplinks... Encoders... etc.

There is room on 129 and soon room on 61.5, just have to get those spots working. Dish is not going to put new HD on 129 before they have matching on 61.5 or too many would howl.

If that was there plan why didn't they say so? I love how they say things are ON SCHEDULE but no one knows what the schedule is.

So 129 has 8 free TP's not 12? But 8 is more than enough for the additional 25 new HD's.

What I don't understand is why they must wait till 61.5 can do the same before they can add any on 129? And most importantly why Scott could not get any info out of DISH other than 61.5?

Charlie has been blaming delay of sat launches for the slow HD addition, but based on your analysis they can add them without any new sats at all? Now I for one can easily see the reason behind the inconsistency, after all marketing and reality are two different things.

Now that it is clear at a minimum AM-14 is delayed, they have decided to go with plan B, to use all the free TP's on 129.

Am I close enough?
