The end is near for Windows XP

Yeah no surprise SP3 is the last SP and most folks should be making the move over to Vista which runs fine.. :)

Microsoft has been doing a lot to shorten support life. This is actually fairly long compared to what they did with 98SE when XP came out.

Besides, this is happy time. High clock rate single processor PCs are about to become very cheap, and will make excellent Linux boxes.

I've got two Vista machines and they are both buggy. One box, if you unplug the power then boot it up again, it takes 15 minutes to boot and runs very slowly. I have to wait until it is completely booted, then do a shutdown/restart for it to run correctly again. The other box, I tried to get to run as an HTPC. My TV only accepts certain resolutions. I set it to 1366x768 and it is fine. When I reboot the computer, it reverts to a resolution the TV won't accept and I have to bring a monitor into the living room to set the resolution.

I was happy to see SP1 come out. Downloaded and installed and my two boxes still have the same bugs. BOO ON VISTA!

For many Windows Me ran "fine". With that in mind, it is important to note that Windows 98 was discontinued long after Windows Me was end-of-lifed. While Vista has brought a different experience, it isn't the quantum leap that was expected in security, reliability and compatibility.

You should move only when it makes sense to you, not because it is financially important to Micro$oft and the hardware manufacturers.

Sounds like a hardware issue or somthing else on the machines that are not Vista Ready.

Just what Stave Jobs was hoping. Forcing people to decide on Apple or Vista will put Apple on the front runner. If it wouldn't have been for Vista, Apple would probably have died in the computer mfg.

I know of one good reason to go Vista for me and that will be when I am ready to run an 8 core 64 bit application. Looks like that will be coming in late 2008. Sony will be releasing it's 64 bit multi core support video editing software.

I have been running XP for years and i just bought my first Vista machine and am liking it so for, I jumped up to the Intel Quad Core with 4 GB ram 750 GB HDD Gforce 8500 GT 512MB Vidieo card all for a little less then $500 buxs.

If they would just make Vista run and look like Windows XP then I think everyone would be fine and would not be kicking a bitch!

Its just like when XP came out you had the option to change the graphics to look like Windows 98.

Thats how all my XP Professional computers are set to look like they are running Windows 98!

Not for anything, the thing that bugs the sh*t out of me about Vista is the fact they conviently renamed most of the features and its very hard to get used to it.

That's just the Microsoft mentality. If given a choice of actually fixing something that's broken, or making it look and act completely different, which one will they choose 95% of the time.

Microsoft has come full-circle on their cycle of innovation to refinement to failure once again.

Win95 is to 98 is to Windows ME as
Win2K is to XP is to Vista.

The more they take away the choice of XP as an alternative to Vista before the Windows 7 platform arrives, (I agree with Don here) the more users will choose Mac instead.

You can still set the start menu to look like the legacy versions of Windows. Mine at home is like that.

I de-vistafied my wife's new pc as much as possible. Starting with the Start Menu; restored the classic one.

Oh, it is not completely the same, but it is possible to tweak it to get it closer to the XP experience. Starting by turning off all the Aero crap and transparent windows....

I suspect my new work machines for the new job will be Vista machines; but they will have lots of memory...
