NFL 2008-09 Season

NEVER EVER listen to "nevers" from a GM or VP of Player Personnel. Prime examples:

...'we will never trade Shaq
....'we will never trade Wayne Gretsky'
....'we will never trade A-Rod'

NO NEVER listen to those people when they say they 'would never do that'....because there is 50/50 chance they will....;)

Agreed. We apparently have 2 contradicting reports. One from Detroit's GM and another from PacBoy's Agent. Until that disgraceful player is signed, the speculation will remain.

Hold on boys, this guy hasn't even been reinstated yet. I won't say never, but I did say that Marinelli is NOT interested in players of this character. Besides they just acquired a number of free agents, and made a trade to rebuild their secondary. OL, DL, RB, and LB's are the priority now. (Jeez, that's the whole team except for QB and receivers)! We should be looking for a new GM instead.

Oh really?..........

"The Detroit Lions are one of three teams interested in trading for suspended Titans cornerback Pacman Jones, according to Jones' agent Manubir Arora."

Sounds like the Lion's are just as much part of the problem! :neener

See link: HERE.

By the way HD, those comments were about MICHIGAN, not the LIONS.

DETROIT LIONS - REBUILDING SINCE 1957!

Followed up by the Never gonna happen , by the AGENT

Ok, now that the #1 pick of the '08 Draft is complete, I'll begin the comparisons.....

Yesterday, LT Jake Long signed a five-year, $57 million deal with $30 million guaranteed with the Dolphins, making him the #1 pick of the upcoming '08 Draft

Last year's top LT (#3 overall), Joe Thomas, signed a five-year, $43 million contract. The deal included $23 million in bonuses.

Anyone think Long will be as good as Thomas?

Taking a offensive linemen in the 1st round is a incredibly stupid financial mistake. NO MATTER how AWESOME they looked in college, they will be facing BIGGER and FASTER guys in the NFL and they will bring NOTHING new to the NFL other than their name. Now don't get me wrong, the 2nd most important position on a tema TO ME in the offensive line....but GREAT offensive linemen are developed IN THE NFL! IF they come into the league with a good work ethic and decent size and skill, they will BECOME good linemen barring injury and stupidity.....they do NOT become good linemen IN COLLEGE.

When you take a player in the 1st, say 10 picks....he has to produce IMMEDIATELY!! Either on the defense or on the offense...none of this "needs to develope a little before he starts"....the ONLY exception is a QB.

Huh? There is no greater risk in drafting an O Linemen (Left Tackles specifically) early than any other position player. Every collegiate player will face bigger and faster opponents, not just the tackles.

Protecting the QB's blindside is one of the most important aspects of the game. Football is won and lost in the trenches. A great tackle can have one of the most dramatic overall impacts on an offense. Of all the truly superior Tackles out there, they have one common thing in common. They were all (with moderate exceptions) drafted high in the first round!

Here is a list of the current/most recent top Tackles in the league and their draft position. Of the list, only Matt Light was chosen later than the first round.......

Walter Jones- Rd. 1/ Pick #6
Johnathan Ogden- Rd. 1/ Pick #4
Orlando Pace- Rd. 1/ Pick #1
Willie Anderson- Rd. 1/ Pick #10
John Tait- Round 1/ Pick #14
Chris Samuels- Round 1/ Pick #3
Jamal Brown- Round 1/ Pick #13
Luke Petitgout- Round 1/ Pick #19
Matt Light- Round 2/ Pick #48
Joe Thomas- Round 1/ Pick #3

And, for that matter, the best Tackle of all time.....

Anthony Munoz- Round 1/ Pick #3

I think I see a trend, do you?

Except for the fact that one of the reasons they are picking this high is due to the LACK of a deceint O Line.....

Joe Thomas is going to be hard to bet, that guy is a WORK horse, and it shows on the field.

Yes,
We all figured that he would be as good as advertised, but you never know, there are plenty that were expected to be very good and were not ...

Tony Mandrich comes to mind....

Robert Gallery was suppose to be a can't miss too.

Your honor, I rest my case! Both Madrich AND Gallery were seen as WAY BETTER players than Jake Long. Like I have said, GREAT offensive linemen are made IN THE NFL....not NCAAs.

So who would you have drafted, Salsa? I too think this is the most important position in football, after QB. I would like to point out that this draft is woefully short at the QB position, (how else would the kid from BC be so highly rated?), and that as far as financial risks go, check out the list of RB's that have washed out of the league after being drafted #1. I said it before, and it bears repeating you build a team from the inside - out. If you have no O-line you draft early in the round, every year. I'll bring up Detroit and Oakland as great examples of that. On the other hand, Denver has a new 1,000 yd. RB every season (all no-names when they were drafted, and with the exception of Clinton Portis, unproductive when they leave for another team.) That's what a GREAT O-line does for you. Now if Matt Millen would just read my memo....

I would have drafted Howie Long's kid from Virginia, Chris Long, or Glen Dorsey. But NOT a O-Line men as the number #1. You can ALWAYS pick-up a good linemen in the 2nd roound and even late 3rd round. With that said, I was surprised byt how many were taken in the 1st round. Again, to me, the 2nd most position is the offensive line....BUT not in the 1st 10-15 picks.....

Interestingly, I heard today that there were like 14-15 O and D linemen taken in the first round ..... And the LIONS failed to find one of EITHER that could help their team.

Apparently you missed my above response to this silly statement. I broke down the recent/current top Offensive Linemen in the league and the one single thing they have in common is that they were ALL 1st round draft picks! (with a single exception going to M.Light at NE). Sure there are busts sprinkled throughout every draft and every position, but the one common trend among elite O-linemen is that they all started off as 1st round draft selections! You simply can't argue that.

In HOW MANY DRAFTS that consists of HOW MANY teams....not a silly comment at at, considering it ALWAYS depends on needs.
