Reply from DN concerning VOOM

I can understand when people's emotion is high we expect to see some heated posts, but to think DISH will tank because of how a few VOOM subs are feeling, all I can say is I can't believe there are people out there who really think so highly of themselves.

You have D*. Why don't you stay in the D* boards? Oh, I forgot we are talking about DirectvJr.

I have E* and I agree with Jacmyoung's comment :)

That is your opinion and that is fine but why come onto these threads and irritate an already bad situation? Are you guys twelve? And before you respond about those of us posting about Voom being dramatic- its true - some of us really enjoyed those channels that were taken away.

So they dumped programming I watch, I did the only thing that will make them listen and cut back my service. I will be damned if I am going to pay the same amount for LESS true HD programming.
Now, if you really want to do something, join me in writing your congressional representatives and the FCC and demand that in order for a provider to charge for HD programming, the channel must provide at least 75% true HD content, excluding commercials. That is, programming remastered in at least 1080i, not just stretched. SciFi in HD? give me a break, since when did '60's tv shows magically become HD?

Ha! Good luck with that! Count me in, but no way are those corrupt bastards in Congress gonna help us out.

I think Charlie would rather run the company into the ground before he ever admits he's wrong. He's doing a very good job of doing it...I will be VERY curious to see the next quarters data. ;)

Did the same thing today. Went from the Ultimate down to the Essentials package. I just couldn't justify the extra 10 bucks for the programming in that tier. The customer service rep said they have been getting calls all day with people upset about the loss of the voom channels. The $5 programming fee charge was waived as well.

Tell us, how much were you paying Dish, oh, say 12 months ago ? How many HD channels did you have then ?

How much are you paying today ?

How many HD channels do you have today ?

I get the point you are trying to make, but it doesn't apply to what I was saying. I didn't say channels. I said PROGRAMMING. But that's probably hard to quantify, so forget it.

Let's look at it this way. Forget about whether it's HD or not. Forget about if I prefer one type of programming to another. Just look at the raw numbers. How many programming options do I have at any one moment...SD or HD? Bottom line, it's less than I had 12 months ago. I had Disney Channel 12 months ago...it just wasn't in HD. Same for almost every other HD channel added. Having Cinemax AND Cinemax HD is NOT two programming choices...it's one

As far as I can see, I have 5 channels now I didn't have 12 months ago...MGM, Smithsonian, WFN, NHL, and Chiller. Maybe I'm forgetting one or two, but I didn't miss 10!

And bringing up price doesn't help your argument either, as I'm sure I was paying $3 to $5 less 12 months ago.

Adding HD feeds of existing channels is NOT the same thing as adding a whole new channel, whether it's HD or SD. It's not the same as far as number of choices for the consumer, and it's not the same economically. DISH is paying less for my programming than they were a week ago. I'm paying the same.

I appreciate the new HD feeds, even the ones that are less than packed with actual HD. Voom was sputtering, I agree. But you can slice and dice it any way you want...I am paying more for fewer channels. That's all I'm saying.

Your argument applies to the people who whine every year when the price goes up. It does not apply here.

This really only applies to the HD Ultimate folks. Check out this (over)simplification...

Group A receives 75 SD channels and 25 HD channels- 100 channels for $100

Group B receives the same channels, plus 100 MORE HD channels- that's 200 channels for $200

Group C receives ONLY the HD channels. They get 125 channels for $125 dollars.

The provider decides to turn ALL 75 SD channels into HD channels. But they need to turn off 75 OTHER HD channels to make room. They don't change the pricing.

Group A now receives 100 HD channels for $100 They are paying the same amount for the same programming, but now more of it is in HD. This is a good deal.

Group C still gets 125 channels, but 75 of them are different. The opinion of which channels are better may vary from person to person, but they are getting the same amount of programming for the same amount of money.

But Group B now only gets 125 channels instead of 200. Yet they pay the same amount. How is this fair to group B?

And one more point. I am talking SPECIFICALLY about the extra $10 we were paying to get Voom among other things.

On Sunday, that $10 bought 19 channels.

On Monday...for a few hours, that $10 bought 22 channels.

On Tuesday...$10 bought 17 channels.

Today? It buys 7.

If you want to argue about "how many HD channels I have vs 12 months ago", then what you're really saying is I'm paying extra to subsidize the people on the other 2 plans. Which really doesn't make me any happier, surprisingly.

Well if that's the case, maybe it's time to petition a new pricing plan to E*. If it's really a net loss in HD programming, and they are claiming it isn't, couldn't they be accused of false advertising?

People throw around "false advertising" all the time. It's BS. I'm in advertising. Pretty much ALL of it is false in some way or another.

All I'm saying...throw HD Ultimate subscribers a bone. They spend more than most people, yet they got screwed the most. Change the pricing structure. And don't treat them like idiots.

If they cut it from $20 to $18, it would be enough of a goodwill gesture for me, and they'd still be pocketing more of my cash.

OR, they can add 4-5 more HD exclusives to it. That's only HALF of what they removed if you count the other 3 they've already added. I think that's a reasonable expectation. But there just aren't 5 more HD exclusives out there to add, so I don't see how that's possible.

Exactly.... but in the meantime, you should downgrade to "essentials". Dish will never "throw us a bone" until they realize that we are not going to take price they are charging for the lousy programming in the "ultimate" package

I have E* too:)

The reason I scaled down E* to a minimum and installed D* was because E* lost its HD lead, VOOM was never an advantage that could made any difference, maybe E* thought so but the last two quarterly numbers proved them totally wrong.

After looking at their own numbers they decided to do what is driving the real HD growth--the D* way. Who can blame them? Once E* adds 100 HDs I may add the $30 HD pack back on my E* account.

It is unfortunate E* has to drop VOOM in order to get there. Would I have preferred VOOM to stay? Of course I liked the Worldsports and WorldCinema when I had VOOM, but dropped E* HD for D* HD anyway. And brought who knows how many to the D* camp with me. Now Charlie has said he will get real in response to the majority like us, I like that.
