Hi,
I've been thinking about getting into the FTA arena for a while..just as a hobby. I recently came across a "take-for free" sign on the following equipment (btw, I took it):

1. Satellite dish: ChannelMaster Part #3040647, Mold .75M-1
2. Standard KU LBF Channel Master PN 3030061 - Norstat 6606A KU Band

I also had a chance to pick up a very old looking ChannelMaster satellite receiver at a garage sale for $10 but passed on it, not knowing if it was good or bad..in retrospect I should have grabbed it.

I'm interested in (initially) just playing around with an FTA setup. Assuming this LBF is good is this a good start?

What receivers can I get to pair up with this (used, cheap) to start off?

Thanks

The dish and LNB will work fine for FTA...any digital receiver will work like Pansat, Coolsat, Visionsat, Fortec, etc

Nice...I'll have to do some more research to learn more about FTA... I have just this one dish now, but have a spare Dish 500+ as well.... anyway this could be a start...

That CM dish will work well. From your description, it sounds like the LNB will work on only one polarity (either H or V, depending on its orientation). Can you post pictures?

I wish I could..the dish is up north at our cottage, I should have brought it down... I purchased a used Coolsat 5000 to try out with this dish...

Oh one thing..I did write down all of the details from the LBF:
Standard KU LBF
Channel Master PN 3030061
6606A KU Band
LO +/- 1 Mhz
NF 0.6 dB
Gain 58 dB
Norstat 0111-37176

So sorry for the newbie question but does that mean I'd be able to get some channels if it is oriented in one direction, others if moved to another orientation?

Yes, if your LNB is single polarity you can only receive one polarity (H or V), you would have to manually turn your LNB 90 degrees to receive the other polarity.

I bought a bunch of Sadoun's KUL2's which in quantity they gave me for $12 each (list is $29 on their website but call 'em up and negotiate). This LNB is a dual linear. Duals are better than singles in that you can hook up multiple receivers to them.

Your going to love playing around with FTA.

$10 + shipping

$15 bucks? Sold! Is there a particular source/LNB that you could recommend?
One suggestion, is: SINGLE UNV FTA SATELLITE LNBF- MINI .
I have a couple, and you can see favorable comments here on the forum by other users.

Last year, I got some inexpensive Universal LNBS marked Sky Mexico for $6.95.
Only problem was the shipping and handling were stiff, and wound up around $10 each, delivered, for four.

These two examples work fine, but I will agree with the comment from above:

Thanks everyone for this information..so is the only issue here that I can't hook up multiple receivers? Or to get some channels I'll have to move the orientation of the LBF? I have only one receiver...
