Thinking of switching to Directv from Dish

I am moving in Mid July to Omaha, NE from a stupid SE Iowa farm town. I am so glad my wife and I were offered new jobs. Anyway, Directv has the Omaha locals in HD and Dish does not. Also, the new house we are buying is larger than the one we have now, so it will be hard for the remotes to communicate with the added distance between TVs.
My question is this, is Directv's HD DVRs anygood, and how many receivers can I get with Directv? I would like to hook up 5 TVs to Directv.

The Directv HD DVR's are just as good as any other DVR in my opinion. They all have there pluses and minuses. The only real big minus I have with the DVR right now is that the response to the remote is a little slow. They are improving the speed over time but it still seems a little slow to me but I have gotten used to it.

As for hooking up 5 receivers that should not be a problem. Your standard installation only includes 4 so you might have to pay a little extra up front but 5 would normally not be a problem. I am currently running six receivers right now with 2 of them being DVR's.

I concur with your assessement on the slow response time to remote control comands. THis is one of my biggest complaints . But I still think DISH dvrs make DIRECTV's dvrs look pretty bad in comparison. THE DISH dvrs have more features that are cutting edge and DIRECTV has only about 9 - 10 hd channels now that DISH doesn't , not counting sports . Once DISH adds the rest of the announced hd channels and even more by the fall , there will be no real advantage any more for DIRECTV-except for sports.

I had DN at my home for over 9 years. I liked the DVR and user interface. The only thing I didn't like and made me decide to switch to DirecTV was the local channels. With DTV I am able to receive all the local HDTV channel over satellite instead of using an OFF air antenna.

It took me a while to get used to the remote control on my DTV system. Also, the channels numbering with DTV is way different than DN. That also takes time to get used to.

If you like sports, you will find a lot of HD sports channels and sports package deals with DTV.

With the new SWM switching technology, now you can use one cable instead of multiple cables to connect your receivers.

I would rate Dish's 622/722 somewhat over DTV's HR20/21. But it isn't big enough of a difference to be a deal breaker for me. My experience is it will record what you want it to and do so reliably. The user interface is a little clunky compared to the 622 but it gets me where I want to go.

That's not a problem if the installer knows what he's doing.
