I never doubt Scott and even though he was unable to tell us a lot of what is to happen with Dish, it seems maybe we got a piece of the puzzle this morning. I woke up to find in my e-mail that Dish is promising over 100 National HD Channels by years end :) :) :)

They've been advertising that for months now. Given all of the channels that they call "national", it's not too big a stretch for them to get there.

FWIW here's the list they included in the email...
Code:
1 abc family HD
2 A&E HD
3 Animal Planet HD
4 BIGTEN Network (2)
5 Biography HD
6 Bravo HD
7 Cartoon HD
8 CNBC HD
9 CNN HD
10 Discovery Channel HD
11 Pay-Per-View (5 channels) (1)
12 Disney HD East
13 ESPN HD
14 ESPN 2 HD
15 ESPN NEWS HD
16 Food Network HD
17 Golf Channel HD
18 VS HD
19 Hallmark Movie Channel HD
20 HDNet
21 HDNet Movies
22 HD Theatre
23 HGTV HD
24 History HD
25 MGM HD
26 Music HD
27 National Geographic HD
28 NBA TV HD
29 NFL HD
30 NHL Network HD
31 Sci Fi HD
32 Science HD
33 Smithsonian HD
34 TBS in HD
35 Tennis Channel HD
36 TLC HD
37 TNT HD
38 Toon Disney HD
39 Universal HD
40 Travel HDTV
41 USA HD
42 The Weather Channel
43 World Fishing Network HD

And more on the way this year!
Selection of HD Channels will vary based on package selected.

(1) = Additional fees apply to view DISH Network Pay-Per-View. (2) = Available in: Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and sections of Pennsylvania and Indiana.
43 + 4 PPV (more) = 47 in the list. But who's counting ;)

Just the forestall the usual comments...

The "number of national HD channels" marketing concept, and the method of counting them, were both created by DirecTV's marketing.

At the beginning of 2007, after months of having much less HD than Dish Network, DirecTV put out a press release that promised "100 channels of National HD by the end of 2007".

Prior to that point, no one cared about the total number.

DirecTV never quite got to 100, even using their own silly methods of counting RSNs and $200 sports packages that are dark half the year.

The only important factor is whether or not the program you want to watch is available on your provider.

At least D* counts RSN's that are on 24hrs, unlike E* which counts them and all you get is a game.

Your list includes NO premiums like HBO, Starz, Cinemax, Showtime, etc.

Moreover, it includes no RSN's other than Big 10.

It is like how they count channels. Does AT250 have 250 real cable channels in it? No, they count audio, shopping and public interest channels in it. It is like how they say 120GB Hard disks are 120 billion bytes instead of 120 Gigabytes even with GB abreviation...

If they get to 150-200 real channels of HD they will pretty much have every real channel. But they will count all the RSN, PPV and probably soon shopping channels in that total.

Its about quality not quantity! They market a lot of BS like right now they say they are the leaders in HD and have added 22 new channels? Reality the dropped 15 of the best HD channels on the market, namely Voom HD. What did they replace? well 7 new channels with real winners like the cartoon network and the weather channel. The others are already in SD and not very good channels plus most of the entire 22 are up converted weak and nowhere near VOOM HD quality!

They can add more and more crap and without quality like VOOM HD channels there is no reason to stay with dish as Directv is better and cheaper! Right now Directv has 90 HD and dish 80 at a lot more. I checked my price and I would save over 40% with directv! Why give money to a company that treats is HD customers like crap by dropping VOOM HD and cleary not asking us! We HD VOOM users pay the most per month and what they shape their weak programming around people whom spent 29-39 bucks a month? I pay about $130 a month!

Drop dish!

FWIW this is not MY list. The list I posted comes from an email sent to me by DISH Network yesterday. All I did was copy the list and add the leading line numbers to make counting easier.

IMHO it shows how confusing the "National HD channel" count claims can be for the average Dish sub, when Dish includes the following...
"And we're adding HD local channels in new areas every week!

Over 100 national HD channels by end of year plus award-winning technology! You don't want to miss out!" to an email that includes a list of HD channels that specifically EXCLUDES the types of channels you mention -- Premiums, RSNs, etc.

How many threads are you going to put this post into? This is at least the 3rd one I have found.

I am getting tired of having to clear up confusion or misinformation:

1. Direct does not and never has counted sports packages as part of their HD count (EI channels are not included in the count for example).

2. RSN's should count because every single Direct sub has the option, just like they do with Premium channels, to watch each available out of market RSN in HD 24/7. Unless you can prove otherwise, give me one good reason why someone in LA watching NESN HD 24/7 should not have it counted as part of their HD count? (Don't give the blackout argument because this is avoidable with Sports packages)

Also, Golf HD & VS HD SHARE the same CHANNEL, but will probably be counted as TWO HD channels.

Of course WFN HD is CRAP with no HD & its FISHING for goodness sake. WHY, WHY, WHY would anyone watch fishing in HD???????????????????????

:rolleyes:Cantonsurround sound wrote: "drop dish!"

My question: why would you have dish if you are advocating dropping it? I have Dish because I have been happy with the variety of programming (except for not having locals in HD). My only experience with DirecTv was back when their signal was suffering from over-compression, which resulted in signal break-up and macro-blocking, but I understand from reading this forum they've taken care of that problem with their new sats. Dish will probably do the same in less time than it took D* to resolve its problems.

I too am sending Dish over $120 per month, but its my choice. I have so many HD channels now I can't watch all the programming I'd like to--what with all the sports channels plus HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Starz, SciFi, etc. What I'm looking for now is CBS C HD, SpeedHD, and my locals in HD. (Plus FX and TCM.) But that's just more variety.

This is America. Be happy. Do what you want. Go to DirecTv or Comcast if it makes you happy, or stay with Dish. Or buy a bigger TV; that's what I really want to do but can't bring myself to shell out the dough. But whose problem is that? Mine. Inability to fire.
