While the national media continues to focus on the fact that Cleveland is undoubtedly going to lose LeBron James, we here in Cleveland continue to think otherwise. Maybe it is delusion. Maybe it is desperation. I don't know for sure. The fact is that nobody really knows for sure. And now, I have a new take on the whole LeBron situation. I haven't read anyone else who put this argument together, but I am sure I will hear about it in the next few days if someone already has.

But before I get into my new take, just for the sake of completeness, here are the basic thoughts being tossed around already. First the camp that insists LeBron has to leave:

* LeBron has to leave because he is friends with Jay-Z who owns an infinitesimal piece of the New Jersey Nets

* The New Jersey Nets are moving to Brooklyn and LeBron has to go help kick off the new era of the franchise

* The Nets traded Richard Jefferson, meaning they are readying themselves for LeBron

* There are escalators in LeBron's Nike contract which pay him more if he is in a major market like NYC

Then the other side is basically:

* LeBron likes his hometown

* Nobody can give LeBron a bigger NBA contract than Cleveland

* LeBron reached the finals in Cleveland

* Terry Pluto's brilliant argument that says you never know where the talent is going to be centered a year from now let alone two years from now

* LeBron has stated that he wants to bring a parade to Cleveland because he knows we are suffering as sports fans (this interview answer is one that the national media NEVER mentions because it doesn't fit their pre-determined storyline that Cleveland doesn't deserve LeBron James)

Well, I have a new take. Everyone was so quick to point out that the Richard Jefferson trade on draft night was definitely designed at getting LeBron to the Nets in two years. Well, you know which team is gearing up to have a ton of cap space when LeBron's contract year comes around?

THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

As of this writing, the Cavaliers don't have a single player under contract for more than LeBron's two year deal. When next season starts the Cavs might have two players under contract for longer than LeBron and those will probably amount to somewhere in the $10-12 million dollar range COMBINED with Daniel Gibson and Delonte West. That's it. Maybe some draft picks will end up with deals that range longer than LeBron's two years remaining.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas and his nearly $11 million comes off. Ben Wallace's almost $15 million comes off. In addition, LeBron's salary comes off. And guess what else. Because LeBron is such an influential guy, the market is going to be flooded with free agents. Dwyane Wade followed LeBron's lead and only signed a five year deal when he was up for his first free agent contract. Chris Bosh also followed LeBron's lead in that department.

You will also remember that LeBron really did lead the charge on the 5-year deals at that time. This means that LeBron has influence. Who's to say that LeBron wouldn't be able to recruit some guys to come in and play with him in two years? Could you imagine Dwyane Wade and/or Chris Bosh playing alongside LeBron? The bottom line is that these types of situations can only occur where tons of cap space exists.

As long as Cleveland doesn't screw this up and load up the roster with too much salary, the Cavs will have $40 million dropping off the cap in order to pull in top talent along with LeBron in his contract year. Think about what the Clippers just did to try and keep Elton Brand in LA.

I am not guaranteeing that this will happen, but it is JUST as likely as all the presumed OBVIOUS scenarios that get bandied about by the national press when they are looking to pull the greatest sports figure in Cleveland history out of this town.

Who cares if he's buddies with Jay-Z?

Think about it:

Yi Jianlian, the overrated Vince Carter, and one of the Lopez Twins- that is NOT exactly a team I'd want to play for. Maybe in practice, but then again...

We're talking about practice. Not a game, not a game, not a game, we're talking about practice. Not a game, not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last, not the game, we're talking about practice man.

We're talking about practice. We're talking about practice. We ain't talking about the game. We're talking about practice, man. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you see me play don't you? You see me give everything I've got, right? but we're talking about practice right now. ... Man, look, I hear you, it's funny to me too, I mean, it's strange to me too but we're talking about practice man. We're not even talking about the game, the actual game, when it matters. We're talking about practice. How the hell can I make my teammates better by practice?

That lineup is good if you're playing NBA 2K9, not the real thing.

If Sandra owned a team that finished at the bottom of the NHL barrel, I wouldn't go there just because I'm a friend of hers.

If I'm Cleveland, try this:

1. Give LeBron a new contract in the Summer of 2009, therefore preventing him from being a free-agent

2. Go after another big-name free agent in 2010, such as Bosh.

* The Nets traded
Richard Jefferson, meaning they are readying themselves for LeBron

Can you say "Bottom of the barrel?" They'll be really bad, and LeBron will NOT play for a loser.

Could you imagine Chris Bosh playing alongside LeBron?

There is a MUCH better chance that will happen.

That's NOT a good move, IMO.

Um Sabres, that was the whole point of the original post. After pointing out the obvious sides for each team attracting LeBron, they went on to point out that Cleveland is well primed to have a TON of money of the books come 2010, thus giving them the ability to sign whoever they want! (Ie, LeBron + Wade and/or Bosh)

Sorry.

I just wanted to see if you got a kick out of my NBA 2K9 line and stealing a classic "Practice" quote.

That's how I feel about this situation.

If it werre me I would keep the entire discussion in one thread. But it si probablya good thing that others don't think like me.

Lets face the facts here, Lebran wants to win!

You got 3 Major Sports teams for Cleveland...

#1 Cleveland Indians. 1920 and 1948 world series

#2 Cleveland Browns. 1950, 1954, 1955, 1964 NFL Championships

#3 Cleveland Cavs. Never won a championship.

Cleveland has not won any major sports championship since 1964, and since the Superbowl didn't come for several years later it leaves the 1948 world series as the last major championship for Cleveland which was 60 years ago.

I personally believe that Lebran loves Cleveland, but he has only got so many good years left to win a world championship and it just aint gonna happen with Cleveland!

IMHO, I think Detroit has a better chance of winning the NBA finals before Cleveland!

Oh, here's the one MAJOR quote from LeBron that the national media failed to mention.

When recently interviewed on local AM Radio station 850 WKNR, LeBron was asked about his future intentions. He understands the championship drought in this city and wants to be the one to bring a Champion back to Cleveland.

"I'm dedicated to bringing a championship to this city," James told Mark "Munch" Bishop during an appearance on ESPN 850 WKNR to promote the upcoming King for Kids Bike-A-Thon. "I'm bringing a parade to this city. I love this city. I love Northeast Ohio. Right now I can't see myself going anywhere else."

I think this seals it- combined with the fact that the Nets will really suck by 2010, he ain't leaving Cleveland.

Miami and D-Wade OTOH- that's not so-clear cut.

A more recent quote from LeBron:

"LeBron, what are your favorite cities?"

"My favorite cities are New York; Washington, D.C.; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, Calif., and Akron, Ohio," he said.

"What's your favorite borough?"

"My favorite borough?" James said. "Brooklyn."

As for someone earlier stating what does it matter about Jay-Z, would you not like to work for one of your best friends?
Jay-Z is part owner of the Nets, and he's helping lead them to Brooklyn.

LeBron has also stated that a goal of his is to become a billionaire.
Forget the NBA contract when it comes to Cavs vs. Nets.
What's going to help him in his quest to become a billionaire more is the endorsement contracts when it comes to Cleveland vs. New York.

He's going to leave - just like C.C. is doing and just like the Browns did.
Let's face it HD MM, we root for one of the most doomed sports cities in the world. :(

Or maybe I'm just turning into a drama queen tonight with the Tribe's 8th straight loss and C.C. leaving. :)

The Nets stink on ice- LeBron would NEVER fit on a team with the overrated and overpaid Vince Carter, Yi Jianlian (I say he'll be a bust), and an unproven Lopez twin.

That's what I'm sticking to.

What's it like to go to a Super Bowl - much less four?

It's like going into a best-of-one championship on a neutral site... and losing EVERY TIME.

And, of course, I could go on all day about the Sabres' woes:

Kasparatitis in 2001, the Lucky Habs of 1993, the 2006 injury plague, etc.

I am williing to bet that D-Wade stays in Miami is more likely than LeBron staying in Cleveland. MORE THAN LIKELY, neither player is going anywhere. But NEVER say NEVER.

And I would not make too much about this comment:

"I'm dedicated to bringing a championship to this city, I'm bringing a parade to this city. I love this city. I love (INCERT CITY OF CHOICE HERE). Right now I can't see myself going anywhere else."

There is not a single major professional athlete that has not said. Of all the ultimate sports cliches, this one is the top 5.
