Dish network® meets 100 hd channel mark ahead of schedule

Personally I would rather have the VOOM channels back. While it's good that Dish is adding more HBO and Starz HD where is Nickelodeon HD, AMC HD, TNT HD, DIY HD, Game Show HD, Speed HD, Hallmark HD, Tru TV HD, FOX News HD, etc. When they say 100 National HD channels I believe they shouldn't include premium movie channels and RSN's in HD.
Why should premiums not be counted???

Can do (when I get home - called into work)...

After looking back at the thread, you are right, only 7 platinum channels so for what it is worth, I agree with your sheet. BTW, in the gold column, you have 39 channels (row 41- row 2 = 39 rows - darn math!) and Dish counts VS/Golf as two channels I believe. That gives you 40.

I think...

Okay someone help explain this to me. I 've read it until I am totally lost.

THe new TURBO hd packs -bronze,silver,gold and platinum -are supposed to be totally HD with no sd channels. So this is a new concept for HD only. This is a price increase of $30.00 over the existing Hd absolute pack for the same hd channels at $29.99 .

SO my question is will you still be able to add the hd essentials pack for just $10.00 to your existing top programming packs and dvr advantage packs? Will you be able to add the ultimate for $10.00 more? Or we supposed to believe that you will need to add the turbo pack + existing programming packs because is that is the case, they are f*cking crazy. Why would anyone pay more to just have hd when they could have both hd and sd for less? Right now I have top 250 dvr advantage for 59.99 + hd essentials at 10.00 more . So I pay 69.99 total to have all the hd channels in the top 250 + hd net , hd theater , mhd. So now I will pay more to get the same channels in hd that I already have?

The top SD programming packs are a complete different price than the metallic packs . For example :

Bronze turbo hd at 24.99 / Dvr advantage at 34.99
Top 100 sd pack at 32.99 / Dvr advantage at 39.99.

Silver turbo hd at 32.99/ Dvr advantage at 39.99.
Top 200 sd pack at 44.99/ Dvr advantage at 49.99.

Gold turbo hd at 44.99/ Dvr advantage at 49.99.
Top 250 sd pack at 54.99/ Dvr advantage at 59.99.

Platinum pack at 10.00 added to any other metallic pack ,includes all hd channels with no sd equivalents.

The old way of using metallic packs for hd were the programming pack + the 20.00 more for the hd channels . That was the way we did it a year or two ago. Then DISH decided to copy DIRECTV and add the essentials pack for hd at 10.00 and 10.00 more for ultimate hd. Now the turbo packs are supposed to be totally HD and they are taking the HD Absolute option and seperating it into 3 or 4 seperate packs . Are we really supposed to believe that DISH is going to charge more money for hd than DIRECTV? I can understand marketing the hd only pack so they can make more money ,as it is something DIRECTV doesn't have. But hopefully they will still allow the older way of doing business with the regular programming packs + 10.00 more for the hd channels of the sd equivalents in that programming packs. CAN anyone make sense of this ? As usual DISH has added more confusion than clarity with the addition of the new TURbo hd packs.

Is there actually a Dish Package that anyone could subscribe to that would result in over 100 HD channels being available?

Looking at the current DISH Network -- Home website, if you get the Dish HD Absolute package they show that you get 45 HD channels. (They count 5 PPV channels as being included in this count, but you can't view those 5 channels without a per-view charge, therefore they are NOT in the package).

So.... 45 (40) + 17 new channels = "Over 100"....

I just don't get it how they can make these claims.

I am all for adding HD capable channels... but please don't overstate what you are actually doing.

Taking away 15 True HD channels that contained over 85 percent HD content and then adding 30 HD channels containing less than 20 percent HD content is not the direction that I want Dish to take.

tdillon,

Not responding to your post, just your sig. I see you are from LaVerne? I currently live in Pomona (aka POORmona).

What is the difference in these packages except one is $10 more per month:

TurboHD Silver DishDVR Advantage: $39.99/month; includes core HD package, local channels and a free DVR receiver; Regional Sports Networks where available

TurboHD Gold DishDVR Advantage: $49.99/month; includes core HD package, local channels and a free DVR receiver; Regional Sports Networks where available

In another thread a slide from the retailer char was shown that says the Gold has 7 more hD chanels. What the 7 are is anyone's guess.

This list may be wrong, but looking over the channel listing for HD without SD channels...
  • HD Theater
  • HDNet
  • HDNet Movies
  • MGM
  • MHD
  • NBA
  • NHL
  • Smithsonian
  • Universal
  • WFN
10 channels here...

I hopew this is a case of Dish talking/writing before they think about it.

Even when they clear something up, they muddle up something else.

However, the slides clearly said Platinum had 7 channels, same as now, so I'm sure it's just yet another case of poor writing.

Why is the NBA channel part of the higher HD package when it has an SD simulcast?

D* opened the floodgates on the vague channel counts early last year when they suggested that NFL ST, MLB EI and other "channels" may be included to reach their number-of-channel claims. That's when Comcast claimed they'd have 800 channels by year's end and their Philly system already had 199 (they claimed their VOD offerings as channels).

Now they specifically state that their total includes the 13 HD PPV and the 8 DNS Network feeds in addition to the "real" (my word) national HD channels. But that certainly doesn't obligate E* to use the exact same criteria that D* uses.

Bottom line is to separate the list into all the different categories and come up with the total that applies to you - whether you are eliminating part-time channels, channels you can't receive, or just channels you don't give a rat's behind about. Just don't expect any company to switch over to more realistic claims while all their competitors are using their own definitions to inflate their offerings.

I think we're all just a little too used to complaining around here... how about this one..

Yay! New National HD channels by the end of this month!

Compared to the limited HD offerings on most of the currently available HD channels, I'd be thrilled to add in some HD-rich premium channels.

Okay someone help explain this to me. I 've read it until I am totally lost....

There are two Bronze, two Silver, two Gold and two Platinum offerings starting 8/1. Essentials will be called HD Bronze, HD Silver, HD and HD Gold, and cost $10 and will correspond to the HD Level of programming that is in the AT packages. HD Ultimate will be renamed HD Platinum and will cost an additional $10. There are no price changes associated with the change from the name Essentials and Ultimate, just a name change to the metal names.

There will now be three levels of HD Only (Absolute), and it appears these will contain the HD channels that are currently available in the AT packages w/HD Essentials - TurboHD Bronze with contain the HD channels that are in the AT100 w/HD Essentials, TurboHD Silver will contain the HD channels that are in the AT200 w/HD Essentials and TurboHD Gold will contain the HD channels that are in the AT250 w/HD Essentials. To get the channels in the current HD Ultimate $10 package (that have no SD version) you'll be required to upgrade your TurboHD Gold to TurboHD Platinum for $10 more.

What is this "Dish HD Absolute" people keep talking about?

This may be poorly handled as usual, but some of you guys are making things WAY more complicated than they are. They are changing the names of the HD Essentials and Ultimate, but not the prices. If you have an SD package, there's not really anything to be concerned with.

I personally think where they made their mistake was jumping the gun with the HD Only package. They knew there would be a ton of new channels coming online, and they were already in the middle of their fight with Voom. If they had not reconfigured the packages just a few months ago, people would be welcoming these changes.

But from a PR POV, it's a bad move. I finally talked my dad into getting DISH for his new HDTV...he's never even had cable before. I talked him into the HD Only package- he was concerned with price, and didn't have any attatchment to any particular channel. He won't be happy if he's told he's getting a $20 price increase for 5 extra channels (which he won't watch, except maybe Planet Green.)

On the other hand, he'd probably be happy with the Turbo Bronze, maybe he could actually save a few bucks.

One more thing...so you can add "Platinum" to "Bronze"...skipping the "Gold" and "Silver". I like the flexibility, but the names are AWFUL! And Turbo? WHY?

I swear, the DISH marketing department must be a group of Sophmore business students doing a class project.

EDIT...Fitz..you both answered my question and did a better job of explaining what I was trying to explain. Still, do the bills actually say "Absolute"? I'm just wondering where this name came from. Never seen anyone use it until today.

Actually, it will be a $30 increase if he wants to keep the same channels he currently receives.

Agreed. Maybe someday DISH will do something good without turning around and screwing something up the same day.

I'm just mad they still didn't take the opportunity to fix the Ultimate/Platinum pricing. Bottom line, DirecTV charges $5 for (basically) the same thing.

Well, $49.95 minus $29.95 is still $20 here in America last time I checked.

But thanks for underscoring my point that this plan is extremely confusing.

· HBO 2 HD (Ch. 301)
· HBO Comedy HD (Ch. 307)
· HBO Family HD (Ch. 305)
· HBO Latino HD (Ch. 309)
· HBO Signature HD (Ch. 302
· HBO West HD (Ch. 303)
· HBO Zone HD (Ch. 308)

I wonder if HBO 2 West is getting swapped out for HBO Zone on the SD side. It seems odd that they would have ONE feed not available in SD and ONE feed not available in HD
