This thread should hit 2,000 posts before the weekend is over....
Thats possible I'm sure. I'm still wondering why some guys think this thread is going to be closed, because of difference of opinion? Thats what this is all about. As long as it doesn't get personal, "attacks" I'd say its going to remain awhile. I still think VOOM should have been Giving its own Forum here at satellite guys. I think that would have benifit everyone.

Impossible - the post began with proof that new shows and new episodes were being shown so how could someone's comment that nothing new was on be applied to the WHOLE PACKAGE?

In your definition of new, you want a new pop top 40 movie theatre release and that is not what VOOM was all about.

Only Smithsonian comes close to what Voom offered. The rest of the new channels are a waste.

They were not my quotes I took them from the links in your post.

By new I meant something that they haven't had on before. Since Monsters was their most popular channel I picked that channel to compare. What they had listed as new was marathons of previously broadcast movies. ie... Halloween Marathon

On average over the last few years Monsters usually has about 4-5 movies a month that they never broadcasted. Sometimes more. Except for the 6 month stretch starting last October- they repeated and didn't seem to add anything new as far as I remember.

I think fighting about Voom movie channels is pointless, because they were as good, really, as most other cable movie channels besides TCM. Monsters is/was a great channel when they're operating like they have been since April.

It's the other dozen channels that killed it People expect to see movies repeated occasionally, but when you see the same shows from 3 or 4 years ago, let alone sporting events, it get's a little tiresome. Casual viewers have already given up when the one new show a week hits the air. This on top of the fact that the channels are too narrow focused to be widely successful.

I know they aren't your posts, I was saying the posts were talking about one or two channels not showing new content. Not every channel had something new every month, but several did and it usually rotated.

It was just a completely different way of programming the channels and it ran counter to what US tv has programmed the average viewer to expect.

I would scan a week ahead and record something from a few channels and that would fill in holes where other non-voom channels were showing nothing I wanted to watch or they were on their own repeat schedule. I never needed to see new stuff on every Voom channel every week. Voom channels provided enough variety that they could give me tasty video treats to see a few times a week from some of the 15 channels.

I'm not dedicated to one channel and don't need to see episodic programming of a weekly nature. If it looked interesting I'd watch it. most of the time I'll watch a series on dvd after it's been out for awhile. You have to watch tv way too many hours to keep up with a dozen shows every week.

But be honest, the vast majority of tv is repeats.

We watch them because we are comfortable with the format, we like the characters, we enjoy the story arc, we get into the nature of the content, etc...

How many dvds do you own? Why? Aren't they just repeats? There was stuff on Rush or Equator or Treasure I could watch over and over. On Voom, not only was the content appealing to me but the presentation was awesome. Legends of the Fall is a so so movie but the cinematography is excellent. I can't get into the Lord of the Rings stories but the cinematography and music make me want to put them on regularly.

What we lost does not exist anywhere else and the rest just dumbs down tv in my mind. I am very disinterested in what we are left with. Like I said before, I'm very close to dumping any provider and just watching dvds and maybe buying into Bluray. I hate giving Sony any money but it looks like we are stuck with them.

To me, the premium channels like HBO, Cinemax (to a lesser extent), and Starz (especially) are a complete waste of money. I challenge anyone to look through the guide and actually try to convince me that they don't just repeat as much or more than the Voom channels were (outside the 6 month deadzone). The premiums like to con people into believing their other 5 or 6 other channels offer something more than the standard channel does, which is nonsense. Channels like HBO Zone, 5-Star Max, ActionMax, HBO Comedy, etc play repeats of all the movies that were on HBO-E/W, MAX-E/W, and Starz that month; they offer nothing new and provocative. With the exception of some great restored classics on Cinemax in their 3:30-6:30am slot-range, they and the other channels repeat the same new, garbage movies month in and month out that people don't need to see more than once because - they're garbage (IMO).

Outside of HDNMV and MGM, what channels actually play classic movies in HD? Are you saying there is more demand to watch Scary Movie 4, Remember the Titans, Hairspray, and License to Wed 30 times a month in comparison? Probably, and that's what makes it so sad......

The only reason I keep Cinemax is to grab those rare early morning 'beauts like The Towering Inferno, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Duck Soup, Midway, The Great Train Robbery, etc.

I apologize for not liking the same lame 2007-2008 movies being repeated over and over (like Spatch), most of which are not worthy of one, let alone a second watch. Someone needs a little cinematic enlightenment.........;)

"6th month deadzone". Never heard it put like that before. Kinda appropriate.

Dunno about the others but Midway and Towering Inferno were also on one of the HD channels the last 2-3 months I think. The older movies do tend to make the rounds on different channels.

Like I said before yes there were repeats but I have a DVR and am unable to watch 24 hours of TV so to me the repeats were ok.

I guess that it is a good thing that they are not part of your standdard package and that you don't have to pay for tyhen

Exactly - I'm glad I don't have to pay for them and maybe that's what needed to happen with Voom. I'd gladly pay an extra $10/mo for them. But I would want 21 channels not the 15.

I have the Cinemax 1 cent deal just for the one or two movies per month I'd like to have archived in HD. I know they are zoomed out from OAR to 16x9 but I'll take the added PQ where I can get it.

Dish Network on the cusp of being the 1st satellite TV player to lose customers

Wow! Businessweek ripped into Dish Network in an articled posted late yesterday afternoon. You can read the details in this thread.

According to a leading analyst, "Dish could shed at least 37,000 of its 13.8 million customers this quarter." According to the article, "Dish has opened a new service center to help counter a 15% jump in subscriber defections" and they quoted CEO Ergen saying he "wasn't as aware of the operations" as he should have been.

As I said before...we loved out 622s (best on the market) and we enjoyed our service, but I just couldn't take another day of HD-Lite...2 years was enough. I can only assume the VOOM situation is added to the growing numbers of customers jumping ship.

Anyway, I predicted Dish Network would lose in excess of 30K in the Dish Earnings Call thread.

Wow, he didn't like last quarters numbers he sure won't like this one. Besides the Voom crap that went on IMO PQ is as bad as I have ever seen. I thought all these new great hd channels we got were supposed to keep people from jumping ship. Wasn't it Vooms fault for E* not having good earnings and subscriber growth? In all honesty E* seems to be doing a lot wrong lately and D* is roaring with their marketing campaign.

Nobody ever won by playing a sloppy game of catchup.

Who is Charlie going to blame now? Let me guess, the economy?

I think someone was well aware of what was coming down the line for Dish way back when they decided to spin off Dish from Echostar.

- First they spin off the subscriber service

- Next they trim back the unique features and flesh it out with similar features to other service providers

- Coming up - sell the subscriber base to another provider and concentrate on hardware and satellites

In all fairness to Mr. Ergen, the man has always done an excellent job with the financials. However, as the Businessweek article pointed out, the industry has changed over the past couple years and Dish Network has missed opportunities and made mistakes. It's certainly not to late to right the ship, but it's going to take time.

It will certainly be interesting to see what he can get done this year.

No he will blame "the media" like everyone else seems to be doing right now. Oh wait. Dish provides "the media" to its customers. So maybe he will blame "the rest of the media"?

I dont agree with all the the conclusions in the article but I am with other posts that it seems to suggest that the company is moving away from being a provider and more of a technology company. Thats not a bad thing actually considering they are pretty good at it. It's not something to sacrifice in order to beat DirecTV. It wouldnt be the first time a company reinvents itself by focusing on what its best at only to back stronger than it was before.

From a non-industry person's viewpoint the problem I see causing people to bail on DISH is: COMMUNICATION. If you have Dish through AT&T you have a major headache with technical/customer support or getting ANYTHING done. If you don't have the AT&T package then you have a major headache because tech support/customer service is based out of S. America and they have no clue about ANYTHING.

If I hadn't found this forum and had a place to vent (and hints of upcoming HD) then I would have left back in January-March when there were no new HD channels in the foreseeable future. Direct TV was doing a great job promoting all of their new HD content.

Honestly, and I know this will make some people mad, I don't think it has anything to do with them tossing the Voom channels, or the lawsuits with Tivo, etc.. the average subscriber probably isn't too concerned (or even aware) of that. What it all boils down to is communication with the customer. Whether it be their top-secret HD release schedule, or their incompetent customer support center people get frustrated when they can't get questions answered or problems solved.
