NCAA Football 2008-09 Season

The results don't matter win or lose. BC should have never had to play such unworthy opponent. How about BYU who won the Mountain West, which besides not being a BCS conference, got them the "honor" of playing a 6-6 UCLA team that was so proud of its season that they fired their coach. Or Arizona St who was denied a berth in the Fiesta Bowl simply because they committed the offense of being from the Phoenix area. There's no integrity in the bowl system due to all the politics so it's unfair to blame teams and conferences for poor results if teams are less than thrilled with their bowl assignments.

Wait a minute ...
Where did you REALLY expect BC to end up ?

They were ranked 14th at the end of the year.
Generally the top 8 teams play in the BCS games, unless of course your God's team Oh, I mean Notre Dame, the team that hasn't belonged in a BSC game since they started the BSC.

fwiw, IF BC was so much better, why were they not ranked higher ?
Why did they have to squeak by a MSU team that was not in the top 20 ?

BC was Uninspired ??? But that would be a LACK of PRIDE then. :(

Didn't YOUR Buckeyes beat them in the Fiesta Bowl?

Also, John Cooper beat them in back-to-back years in the Orlando Pace era.

According to the scoreboard,

Buckeyes 3

Fighting Irish 0

No I'm not saying that BC should have been in the BCS. They had their shot at that in the ACC CG, but they were the ACC runner up and should have been in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl as they are supposed to get the ACC's 2nd best team. Instead, BC got passed over for Clemson who BC beat and BC was also passed over by the Gator Bowl for Virginia so BC got stuck playing a 6-6 MSU team that was like the 6th best team in the Big Ten. That's a raw deal if I've seen one and BC should not be blamed if they decided to mail it in. Pride goes out the window when the bowls start playing politics like that.

Yes the Bucks beat them in the Fiesta bowl (think it was Fiesta), but that bowl was not the bowl it is now, back then, I think it was in the beginning of the Fiesta becoming a large bowl game.
Bucks also beat them during the regular season several years in a row, don't remember what years, I think it was the last time they played during the season.

Bowls aren't playing politics when its known that BC failed to sell more than a couple grand worth of tickets to their own fans for the ACC title game. The bowls are doing what they have to do to ensure themselves a sellout. When the weather is nice in Jacksonville and you can count heads from aerial shots for the number of BC fans, BC athletics has a problem and have no reason to whine about bowl destination. BC has had this problem going back to the Big East because of the lack of a travelling fan base. Now that they are even more isolated from the rest of the conference it doesn't help.

Trust me, the BC fans didn't all go to the john at once. Virginia Tech did what they could. This is the reason why the Peach Bowl gets the first choice of ACC teams after the BCS, not the championship game loser automatically.

As for Arizona St., they saw it coming. Friend of mine who works in athletics there said there was a good chance that they would be travelling and that they didn't mind it. San Diego is a destination area and a place with a lot of recruits.

As for the Fiesta, their goal was a sellout. But they didn't have much of a choice in the situation. Once the Orange, who was ahead of them in the selection process, took at-large Kansas, the Fiesta could no longer choose ASU because W. Virginia and Hawai'i were not selected to bowl games as BCS eligible teams and both Oklahoma & Georgia were already in the Fiesta & Sugar as anchor representatives. Blame the Orange for that mess.

Actually, that is no excuse for not playing well, if you snubbed for some other bowl it is the coaching staffs job to get the guys to understand this is still an important game.
Pride does NOTY go out the window. What your saying sounds like a team that went to a bowl game, not the one the wanted to go to and pouted about it.

They should have looked at it as a chance to put a whipping on a lower team and build something for the next year as a lot of teams do (build for next year is common)... instead they pouted and barely beat an infurior team....
That goes directly to the coaching staff.

2-2 vs. ND in the regular season, 1-0 against them in bowls.

Ohio State Game by Game against Opponents

It has been argued that BCS bowl games, other than the National Championship Game, are meaningless. But do you think the kids playing think the game is meaningless? To many of the seniors on either team, it's their last chance to make a big impression on some NFL scouts on a national stage. Don't think the coaches don't take it seriously either. Bill Stewart got the vacant head coaching job at WVU because he was able to help the demoralized Mountaineers to a Fiesta Bowl win. That's an extreme example, but other coaches would very much like the boost in recruiting that winning a BCS bowl can provide. Playing in a bowl game, especially a BCS bowl, is a free commercial for your program for any recruits watching. A win in a bowl game, meanwhile, is a great commercial for your program.

To call bowl games meaningless wouldn't really be true, because that implies that nobody involved is trying and that there are no positives for winning. And as a previous poster remarked before, it's also about pride. There's no pride in winning a preseason NFL game. There is pride in winning the Orange Bowl or the Sugar Bowl.

+1. Good post Risnuff.

Sorry Anders, but I completely disagree with your anti-bowl sentiment thoughts.

BINGO - someone gets it...

There's a reason the ACC had to rewrite their bowl agreements for BC! :)

I guarentee Kentucky fans would sell out a BCS bowl game.

I wouldn't say that Miami is the most hated in the ACC. They've only been in the conference for a few years and they've sucked every year. Florida St is still the most hated even if they're not very good right now.
