I’m unsure how many (if any) players have won the Cy Young in back-to-back seasons for different leagues, but I’m sure that possibility is not far off given CC’s dominance since being dealt to the Brewers about a month ago.

Sabathia has pretty much toyed with the NL since being traded. In 8 starts, Sabathia has gone 7-0 with 4 complete games, 60 strike-outs and an ERA of 1.55!

A look back at history does indeed show the possibility. And as a strange coincidence, the Indians were involved in both scenarios...
"On June 13, 1984, the Indians traded Rick Sutcliffe to the Cubs. He made 20 starts, going 16-1 with seven complete games and won the Cy Young in the NL.

On July 7, 2008, the Indians traded CC Sabathia to the Brewers. He’s made 8 starts, going 7-0 with four complete games.

With eight likely starts, perhaps as many as ten if the Brewers shorten up their rotation and Sabathia’s rest, he has a chance to approximate Sutcliffe’s numbers and perhaps his run at the Cy Young."
And to take this prognostication a bit further, it should be noted that the Indians also have a chance in producing a different Cy Young winner 2 years in a row. How cool would it be if Cliff Lee wins it for the AL and Sabathia wins it for the NL?

Any thoughts on Sabathia's potential to capture the NL Cy Young this year?

I think if you can get 8 more starts out of him and he has a good record, he definately might. But I HIGHLY doub he will be as good in the National League next year....he is still mystery in the senior circuit.

Only two men have ever won Cy Youngs in both leagues. they are Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez but they did not do it in the fashion you describe. Interestingly they each got their Cy Young in the new league in the same year.

As for Sabathia this year who knows. it si possible but will the NL writers pick a player that spent half his season in the other league. yThey certainly can but will they. Only they can answer that and they probably won't till they vote.

Sorry for breaking radio silence. I just decide to throw that in.

In 1987, Doyle Alexander went 9-0 in 11 starts with Detroit after being traded from Altanta and finished 4th in Cy Young Award voting.

While I think Sabathia CAN win the Cy Young, I don't think he will. The NL is loaded with pitchers having very good years:

Brandon Webb 17-4................2.88
Edinson Volquez 14-5...............2.86
Tim Lincecum 12-3...............2.67
Ryan Dempster 13-5...............2.92

I think Sabathia needs at least 12 NL wins, and maintain his gaudy ERA to be considered. I also think it would help if the Brewers beat out the Cubs in the Central.

Brandon Webb would be the next logical choice for the NL with 17 wins already. But with an ERA of 2.88, Webb is nearly double that of Sabathia's ERA in the NL. It should also be noted that Sabathia leads the Major's in strikeouts with 183 (60 in NL) and innings pitched (186).

I guess the question should be, how much more of a resume shuold the NL see in order to determine that Sabathia is the most dominant pitcher in the NL right now?

No, he is the first logical choice. You can't give the CY Young award to somebody who pitched half of a season. Maybe if he had a stellar first half in Cleveland..... nah, forget that too. Half a season in the league doesn't cut it for me.

Besides the first 4 games of the season, Sabathia was as dominant with the Indians as he is now with the Brewers. IMO, he's better this year than last year when he won the Cy Young in the AL over Beckett.

Come'on Matt. He was nowhere near that earlier this season.

I wouldn't say "no where near" Pauly..... I threw out his first 4 starts (which I said were awful earlier. Since then he's been stellar. Look at his ER and K's. Whether he earned the victory or not in Cleveland was partially due to a bad offensive support.

IF Brandon Webb wins 20....and his ERA does not shoot to the moon, it is his. UNLESS of course, the Brewers overcome the Cubs(stranger things have happened) AND Webb hits the skids.

IMO there is no better pitcher in the major leagues today. The guy has unGodly stuff.
Now, because CC has switched leagues, he has to put up historic numbers to capture that award. With 38 games left and a 5 man rotation he can get maybe 7-8 more starts....9 if there's a rain out or two and Mil goes to a 4 man rotation.. It's possible for him to win 14-15 games total in the NL.....Possible.

Why are the Brewers still pitching Sabathia?!

The Brewers are wining 9-2 in the bottom of the 9th and yet they still have Sabathia pitching. He's thown 115 pitches going into the 9th. By the end of the inning he'll throw over 140 pitches. If he completes this game, it will be his 5th complete game in 9 appearances in the NL. That will be an NL lead. I realize the Brewers want to get the most out of their lease this year, but come on! They're gonna burn this guy out for the post season.

Final. Brewers win 9-3.

Sabathia's line....
8th win. (8-0 in NL)
1.55 ERA
5th complete game
2 ER
9 SO
Batting: 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's

How many wins does he have overall? 14? Volquez has more than that and a lower ERA.

Yeah but Volquez lost 5 times this season. Sabathia still has a perfect resume against the NL.

AND Volquez is a Rookie on a crappy as hell team with little to absolutley NO offense to support him. IF Volquez was on the Brewers, he TOO might be undefeated. I DOUBT he would be 8-0 on the Reds....

...damn, if the Reds had Volquez, Sheets AND Sabathia...they would still stink....how sad....:(:(:(
