Can't get 1080p on my 1080p set. What gives?

I have a Sharp Aquos LC-52D62U and also cannot pass the 1080p test. My TV displays "an incompatible video signal has been received." Has displayed Blu-Ray and PS3 through same HDMI connection at 1080p with no problem. Should there be an option in 722's menu HDTV setup for 1080p tv type or still only 1080i? Guess I could call Dish and add my model to list of incompatible 1080p displays.

Your TV is not 1080p24 capable, hence the failure. You can still watch it at 1080i.

Now you know

When my screen went black during the test check, it didn't come back on with any message other than 'test failure'. I called Dish and asked them about it and I was told to make sure my TV was "set to 1080P", not anything under.
Told them my set's native resolution is 1080P. They then said that I need to contact Sony about the problem, it wasn't Dish's fault.
What a PITA!

Edit:

I just received this response from Sony, regarding the problem with the 1080P VOD from Dish:

Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience as your Sony TV is not displaying the 1080p resolution Picture. HDMI interface is necessary to view the 1080P resolution Picture i your Sony TV. The television display has a native resolution of 1080p. This means that any supported signal (480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i) that is input to the TV will be up-converted from its original resolution and displayed in 1080p.

None of the input jacks on the television have the capability of receiving a 1080p signal; trying to input a 1080p signal into the TV will result in a blank or distorted picture on the screen. If you are connecting a video device that is outputting a 1080p signal, the video device will need to be reconfigured to output at a different resolution, such as 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i.

For many electronics used as an output device, such as a Blu-Ray (BD) player or HD cable box, the conversion of the signal occurs automatically. However, for the PlayStation3 console, there is a need to manually change the output setting on your device from 1080p to 1080i. While this manual change may appear to be changing the display resolution on your television, it is actually changing the output signal resolution of your device only and not the television display resolution, which is fixed at 1080p.

Thank you for your time.

What that says is the Sony on scales input to 1080p but isn't able to accept 1080p. I would say you were lied to about the abilities of the set. I wonder how many other Sony sets are this way?

Well, if Sony tech support is correct, than when you push the "display" button on your tv's remote, the highest number that you can see in the upper right hand corner of the TV will be 1080i and you will never see 1080p being that it is reading the input signal.

I don't have a BluRay, so can anyone confirm this?

So let me get this straight. My Sony that says FULL HD right on the front actually only has the capability to upconvert to 1080P and not display a true 1080P signal?

I don't get it. It's a scam. Why would there be a TV that says it's 1080P but does not have a 1080P input but has the capability to upconvert to 1080P, which obviously isn't 1080P because the original signal is 1080i? So the end result is something in between 1080i and 1080P, which is not true 1080P. Totally efffed up! So if I accept the movie at 1080i and it is upconverted to 1080P it's not really 1080P so it is a scam. Class action lawsuit? So if I play a Blue Ray movie in a Blue Ray player it is actually upconverting a lower signal to 1080P? Why not just buy a $50 upconverting DVD player (like I currently have)? Sony is Sh*T! So all TV's with no 1080P input but advertise 1080P capability because they claim upconverting are not really 1080P?

When 1080p sets first hit the market, none or very, very few of them accepted 1080p inputs, then just upconverted everything to 1080p which was a benefit for 1080i incoming signals. Slowly more and more started accepting 1080p60 but not 1080p24. Now most newer sets accept 1080p60 and 1080p24.

Unfortunately, it appears not many people knew what they were really buying when they bought a "1080p" TV.

If this is true for our Sony sets, this is gonna be a HUGE issue and if this is true for my Sony A3000, believe me, I see an attorney in my future.

This is why I say a class action lawsuit may be due. The front of my TV literally says FULLHD1080. The manual repeatedly states the 1080P capability of the set. Nowhere does it explain the BULLSH*T about the 1080P input and not actually being able to display a true 1080P signal. It is very misleading and downright criminal. This should have been clearly disclosed at the time of purchase or at the very minimum explained in the manual, which I will read again to make sure.

I have a Sony LCD 1080p KDL-40V2500. Just tried out a BluRay 1080p DVD movie "Ghost Rider" from a PS3 connected by hdmi. Purchased January 2007. Pressed the info button on the remote and it says 1080p in the upper left hand corner. When I try out the I Am Legend movie from channel 501 it says not compatible.

And that display in the corner is showing the input resolution so what in the hell is that Sony Tech talking about?

So I guess the question is whether or not it is 24p capable.

The test failure message may be because of a HDCP test failure, not a 1080p test. Is your HDMI cable straight from the sat box to the tv?

I bought my XBR2 set 1 year ago. Sony told me it's 1080p 60fps, so I deleted ch. 501 from my ch. list. I don't fault Sony at all. Dish should be using software that will work with 1080p 60fps.

A lawyer? You gotta be kidding.

If what this Sony tech is saying is true about my A3000 (1080p/24), then no, I am not kidding at all, for it is blatant misrepresentation in all of their marketing, brochures and owners manuals.

Your TV will accept 24p without conversion.:D
