I am very excited about this. I still have a Philips SD DirecTivo going and just retied another one. I am concerned about a few things though. Will this new box support SWM? I really need this. Will DirecTivo users get left in the dust yet again in 2 years when some new upgrade comes along?

Wow. Directv just won me back from cable. Yes, I was on 10 HD channel cable just to keep my Tivo. I'm even willing to deal with a directv plus dvr until the new tivo comes out.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS!

We LOVE our SD DirecTiVo!!!

Now have a reason to stay with DirecTV when we upgrade to HD!

like i said before. in order for me to be attracted to this it needs to be better than what we have now and in the past. not similar to something in the past or somewhat better than what we have now. i truly believe that this will be the best dvr yet that D has offered. i hope i'm right. there are some that are just waiting for a better dvr from D to make the switch. this might do it.

This is what Im wondering about, how much is the customer going to pay initialy and later down the road based on what this says.

TiVo said in the filing that DirecTV will pay "a substantially higher monthly fee" for households using the new HD DVRs with TiVo than the fees for the satellite operator's previously deployed TiVo-based DVRs. The fees paid by DirecTV are subject to monthly minimum payments that escalate during the term of the agreement starting in 2010, according to TiVo.

DirecTV To Offer TiVo HD Service - 9/3/2008 7:36:00 AM - Multichannel News

Edit: Looking at this makes me wonder who had the upperhand in negotiations, I dont think direct did given that tivo is hurting dish. I'd bet that the gave direct a choice in how the future could go for them.

Another thing I miss about the TIVO is the guide options where I could go down a list of channels and see what was coming on for the next 10 programs without having to scroll over and back all the time.

That is the only thing I miss is the Dual Live Buffers too.
ditto

It seems strange that they will continue to offer their own receivers as well? Now customers will have to choose between models that will do virtually the same thing (with surely small differences). For those of us that frequent forums like this, we can make an informed decision, but won't the average customer just get more confused about what to get?

As much of a fan of Tivo as I was, I'm not sure I would switch back just to switch.

Well judging by the D* tivo receiver I had, It functioned way better then any D* H20 or HR 20 that I've ever used. ,But mine needed a new hardrive, and power supply after 3 years. So did the one I bought off EBAY thats still in my closet, that was made in 2003.
So if the parts are made by D* and the software made by TIVO, I'd say LOOK OUT E*.

According to this, the new HD Tivo will indeed run on D* hardware.

(New) HD TiVo Coming to DirecTV!

TiVo and DirecTV have not only extended their recicrpocal do-not-sue clause, they’re getting back into bed for some new hardware. The original HD DirecTiVo supports only MPEG-2 and has been out of production for a few years, while DTV screwed around with NDS. Although they’ll likely continue marketing NDS DVRs, offering TiVo as an upsell with less subsidized hardware.

The current TiVo HD platform should be sufficient for decoding DirecTV’s MPEG-4 HD content once they integrate satellite tuners - which supports their aggressive goal of rolling this out next year. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for Dish… ;)

DIRECTV, Inc. (Nasdaq: DTV), the nation’s leading satellite television service provider, and TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR), announced today that they have extended their current agreement, which includes the development, marketing and distribution of a new HD DIRECTV DVR featuring the TiVo(R) service, as well as the extension of mutual intellectual property arrangements.

Under the terms of the non-exclusive arrangement, DIRECTV and TiVo will work together to develop a version of the TiVo(R) service for DIRECTV’s broadband-enabled HD DVR platform. The product will support the latest TiVo and DIRECTV features and services, including TiVo’s Universal Swivel Search and TiVo KidZone. TiVo will develop the new HD DVR for an expected launch in the second half of 2009.

UPDATE TiVo has just clarified for me that the service will run on DirecTV hardware, not the TiVo HD hardware as I had assumed.

WOWZERS! I am setting aside money now every month so I can buy this when it comes out..I do enjoy tivo....my only question is now this, What about SD recievers, Like the R10 and such, wonder if they will put those in production again, or do a new one, I have two R10's that if they go out, I get the Newest Dvr from Directv not Tivo.

Directv is phasing out the Standard DVR and Standard Non DVR and HD boxes in 2010 so only HD DVR will be standard install for everyone at that time..

Say BU BYE to Dish Network ahah!

I'll return my HR20-700 for that sucker anyday!
And I am willing to pay the extra costs.
I hope they have a much bigger HD-DVR.

This is a Blockbuster announcement.
Man I can't wait for the 2nd QT of 2009!

I had the old D* Tivo-HD and now have the HR21-100. The only thing I miss is the dual buffer. I had to replace the D* Tivo-HD once because the hard drive died. On the other hand I've had to reboot the HR21 a few times when it would start acting up. I think I had to reboot the D* Tivo-HD only a couple of times until the hard drive start to fail.

I'll have to wait and see. I'm happy with the HR21 right now. But in a year who knows what's going to change.

Wow! Now that's a surprise! I'm not fond of Tivo myself, but I'll leave my opinion to myself and keep my mouth closed until more information on the new HDDVR is released. If there is any increase in DVR fee for it tho, I won't be interested no matter how good or bad Tivo is. It'll be interesting to see how Directv does this. If this is done right, with no added "Tivo fee", it'll be a MAJOR plus for Directv over Dish Network.

I all I can say about this announcement is WOW!!!!!

I guess it is time to hold off on buying any new DVR's until we find out more about this. I would really like to see the HR series be software upgradeable so I don't have to purchase any new receiver.
