What will I miss about my vip622 if I switch from Dish to Directv?
How does Directv DVR compare?

Just did that friday so I suppose I am the right user for this question. If you get a HR22 you might miss a bit of sharpness but mine seems to have better audio. I am using the optical out. Folsk are reporting that the HR23 seems to be buggy, so for now the 22 might be the better DVR. The 22 is quieter than the 622 and of course black which I like.

One thing I used which the DIRECTV dvr's apparently don't do is navigate a specific number of hours ahead. On the 622 you can be in the guide and hit 24 and the right arrow and it will jump 24 hours. The DIRECTV dvr's just have a +12 and -12 button to jump. The DIRECTV guide is 14 days and dish only had 9 I believe. I do miss the vhf out of the 622 which i used to feed a second tv.

You may also not like the button arrangement on the HR's remote but that is probably a matter of taste. Also, I liked the dish guide having allmost all of the HD together. You may not like the big blue circle in the middle of the DVR that is way too bright but I suppose one can find something to place over that.

Overall the HR22 is a good machine and DIRECTV is a good service. As I have stated elsewhere, I wanted SPEED in HD and Leo Laporte is supposedly near a deal to simulcast some of his web TV output onto channel 101.

Good Luck,
Robert:)

HR is slow

You are right about the HR 23 being buggy. I have the HR 21 it is alot faster than the HR23. It is slow on changing to the guide and going to a new show in the guide.

When you have the guide up, hit the yellow "Guide" button and then select the Jump to a Date & Time option. Then you can pick any of the 14 days and then any hour of one of those 14 days. This may or may not be better than E* solution but I like this feature.

you might miss PIP /dual chanel buffer/ OTA built in / Sling guide (dish.sling.coX) /Recording 3 shows at once.. and about $10-15 missing out of your pocket every month..

Other then that direct caries chanels that dish is lagging on.. i dont regret getting direct tv just wish they wuld figure out all the problems with the HR line and fix it for good...

Only thing I miss is recording 3 programs at once. I don't remember if dish network machines allowed recording 2 OTA at once like D* does. DirecTV has better PQ so pretty much nothing :)

Or you can be in the guide and highlight the channel press info and a list guide will appear showing you all that's on that channel.:)

Don't like the light circle?.Press the left arrow and right arrow at the same time on the DVR.There is 3 light settings or off.:)

You want to speed it up?.reformat the hard drive.Just remember if you reformat you will lose all recordings and settings you will have to resetup the DVR.:)

You shouldnt have to do that. Also, it is merely a temporary fix. The real solution is for D to outsource their programmers and bring in Tivo (or someone else) to take over. I think these guys have had plenty of time to figure out what in the world they're doing. If D could ever get their act together on the equipment side, they would really grab more marketshare from E. They offer high-end programming and low-end equipment. If they want to position themselves as a high-end provider (and by all account they do), it's time to get on the ball here.

+1
I agree just trying to help out until someone figures this out.

Awhile back didn't Dish get rid of a bunch of software engineers?.Did they show up at DirecTV's door and get hired?.

Also think that's another reason DirecTV resigned with Tivo.;)

I wonder if D*'s slow boxes (compared to the ViPs) is due to insufficient CPU/Memory instead of bad software. Cause after two years the software should be optimized by now. Either that or their developers are just as bad as D*'s contract negotiators.

BINGO we have a winner!!:up

Well I believe the difference is the ViP's are still using Tivo software where D*'s are not......yet.;)

and D*'s will do it legally.

I miss the OTA tuner. I miss the layout of the channels, which seem more intuitive. Conterbalance that with habitual breakdowns on the Vip and I'll stick with the 2 HR22s.:D
