I would be getting a 1.2m offset Dish to experiment on C-band, but from all indications, readings and postings on this forum the Combined C/KU band LNBs that you dealers sell work better with a a Cone shaped Scala ring. I Know I speak for a lot of members when I ask why Sadoun, SatelliteAV or GoSatellite don't have or sell the C-Band Offset (scala ring) Cone shaped Feed Horn? I have tried to locate dealers of the Cone shaped Scala ring in the USA and Canada without success. I did however, contact a company in Europe who refused to sell the scala ring to me, because they can only supply to dealers like you who buy in large quantities. Can you guys contact them for the rights to distribute and sell the Cone Shaped Scala ring here in North America? The Company's name is TECATEL. When on their website, click on "Select Language" to select English. I believe we would all benefit if any of you dealers sold this product. :eureka

Check the threads, I recall seeing a couple of threads on DIY conical scalars.
I have. For someone with the know how and tools that is great, but for somebody without, it is a nightmare fabricating scalar cones...............this is not because of lack of trying.

Badadem, you're not alone brother, I agree with your attempts to try and get these venders off there butt's, and I too think the Conical Scaler Ring would sell. Unfortunately they don't, so we are sh*t out of luck. Maybe this thread will be the one that wakes them up, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Good Luck in your attempt though, I'm behind you all the way!

But now in these troubled economic times, it's even -more- doubtful a distributor will heed the plea.

So, I gave up and got two BUDs which came with regular prime-feed scalars! - :cool:
Problem solved: I can quit worrying about my blood pressure, and wearing out the keyboard in searches.


There were three conical scalar solutions I recall:

- a member was getting his brother to send some in from a foreign country, but the price was not attractive

- EyeInTheSky.Net has an LNBF with conical, but their damned web site is such a PITA, I can't give you a link.

The picture shows a flat scalar, so CALL the b&st&rds, and bitch!
Oh, and that crack about the dielectric plate, is total B/S to the n'th degree! geez!
If I remember, TruckRacer bought this item a couple of years ago and it worked!

- I found a C-band LNBF on a Russian site for a pretty good price.
It came with conical scalar.
With a little searching, I'm sure you can find my post.

If I were going to order, I'd get my credit card company to issue a one-use CC number (some will).

If your tight on cash and want to fabricate your own conical scalar to use in conjunction with an offset dish and C-Band you can try this.

Here is a homemade version of a conical scalar that can be fabricated in very little time and for under $10.

Here are some experimental testing results I compiled for this scalar for a certain transponder with 60% quality without scalar, used in conjunction with a 1 meter offset dish, BSC621-2 LNB, Coolsat 5000 receiver. The scalar works as good as the commercial conical scalar that you can purchase for $72. But this version is very touchy, better used for fixed point dish operation.

1. Attached only one ring, makes no difference if it is the small medium or large ring and mounted at very end of the waveguide, quality of 60% signal jumps to 68% and dish is very stable. Moving the dish up/down, right/left and inch doesn't seem to change the signal quality.

2. Mounted second ring 10 to 15 mm spacing back of first ring, quality now rises from the original 60% to roughly 78% and dish is still very stable. Arc alignment for all satellites seems spot on. Moving the dish up or down, right or left 1/2 inch doesn't seem to change the signal quality much.

3. Mounted all three rings as shown in photo. The original 60% quality has now jumped to 94% and dish is now very touchy. Transponders on same satellite may have just a slightly different elevation alignment, and from one satellite to the next the alignment could be just a little bit off. By this I mean you could set all satellites for 85% quality, and let go at that or you could use as a fixed point dish and increase signal quality to 94%. Also moving the dish 1/2 inch up or down, right or left changes the signal quality from 94% to 0%."

The attached photos show every needed to fabricate your own version of an offset scalar and the scalar attached to the LNB. Shown in the photo a pair of scissors, a compass to draw circles, a roll of aluminum tape and a thin sheet of aluminum. The only item not included in this photo is a metric ruler. You can substitute the 6 mil printing plate with a piece of cheap flashing or roofing tin, the thinner the better."

Referring to the photo showing the three cut outs of one small, one medium and one large ring; This wasn't the optimum performing scalar but was second best. To fabricate this scalar lay out a sheet of tin and draw two concentric circles, cut out the inner and outer circle with a scissor and slit the tin to open the inner circle. Wrap the ring tightly around the neck of the LNB and use a small piece of aluminum tape to hold the ring together. Space the rings 15 mm apart with the smallest ring positioned at the very edge of the waveguide. Here are the dimensions for the three rings:

Small- 90mm inside circle diameter, 140mm outside
Medium- 90mm inside circle diameter, 200mm outside
Large- 90mm inside circle diameter, 260mm outside

It is all about economics. Quantity, demand and profit margin. An offset type scaler is a niche of a niche market and usage. Optimally, the scaler would need to be designed to match the specific reflector so not to over or under illuminate the varied surface shapes. An offset reflector type dish for C-band reception just isn't too common of usage in North America non commercial applications. There would need to be a demand beyond the hobbyist in order to carry stock and generate a profit.

This offset scaler be a good item for a distributor serving the Caribbean or other areas where offset dishes are often used for C-band reception (check out scalers designed for C-band broadband applications).

I've just quoted enough to whet your appetite:
... I hadn't been using a scalar plate so next I thought I would play with that and see what happens.

I put the scalar at the point it usually is located on a prime focus and it literally killed the signal.
As I moved it toward the focal point the signal improved but it was basically the same as having no scalar.
I was observing the Q meter as I was removing the scalar and noticed a bit of a spike at a certain point.
I slowly put the scalar back on the feed and when the inner ring was within 1/4 to 1/2 inch of being flush with the end of the feed throat there was a serious spike in quality.
I was blown away to see a whole SEVEN Q's increase. This made all signals very useable.
I'm sure it would be worthwhile to have a conical scalar plate but right now this is working as good as I need it to.

No, I won't recommend a 4 foot dish for C band use, ...

Just to add a quick note here; I tried the flat scalar that came with the BSC621-2 LNB, moved the position everywhere in placement, used in conjunction with the Wineguard 1 meter offset dish. But, it does not illuminate the offset dish correctly and made no difference wether it was attached to the LNB or using no scalar at all.

A simple tin funnel of any shape will increase signal quality, my home made version does a pretty good job of improving signal quality and focusing the beam. The more rings you add the tighter the focus, which increases the signal quality and strength but makes the alignment of the dish very touchy! Using a three ring version puts the power into a pinprick spot and you may find transponders on the same satellite at a different dish alignment.

When I have a bit more time I will try and post more photos showing the signal quality on different satellites and channels, but all my photos were taken using the two ring scalar version. Right now into listening to the FTA show on 97W Galaxy 19 "Access America Radio", they are currently talking about this topic. You should all tune into this program, it is on transponder 12.114V SR 22.425 (Radio Channel Name is "Access America" show name is "The FTA Show"). It is the greatest show on earth and broadcasts a wealth of information!

Hey Brotherhood!

I want to thank you for the comercial scalar you sold me. It works great, becuase it is sturdier than my home made version I plan on using for my permenit setup with an offset dish. With this scalar I can attach a plastic cover on it to keep moisture out of my LNB without deforming the rings.

For others following this thread, the conical scalar that is comercially made that "Brotherhood" has to offer works great, the quality drops on certain channels maybe 2 to 4% comparing to my home made version. But it seems to track the arc better if used in conjunction with a motorized offset dish, not as touchy!

"Brotherhood," I left your name out of my prior posts as I know it is a hazzel for you to get these. Thank you for offerring; anyone considering this scalar can not go wrong- I have tested and it does work!
