With the exception of NBA TV and NHL Network which for some reason are only HD in Platinum

I think you are right on about this. Scott in his reporting stated he didn't hear anything about the Turbo packages during the conference. Well thats not a good sign. If not by the end of the year, then with next year's rate hikes we will see a restructuring. Just MHO.
You are assuming it the content/channels preventing all the HD channels added in 2009 from being added to TurboHD, but I think it's Dish Network. I think they know excatly what they are doing: the old bait and switch. Their CSRs were telling prospective new customers that any new HD channels added would fall into one of their TurboHD packages -- and heck that seemed believeable becuase their CEO proclaimed the large price increase to the TurboHD packages was because of all the new HD coming. That got me to switch...and now I'm stuck -- at least theoretically -- but I will not take it lying down! I really hate class action lawsuits, but maybe in this case that's the only way Charlie will correct his "mistake".
I just have to make a comment about SPEED and their HD content.......it's great!! Show after show is HD unlike some of the other channels that have been turned on as of late. I was trying to figure out what other national channels have this much HD content (other than HDNET, etc) but the list is pretty short. CMT and VH1 are a joke but at least the PQ is better now. I can't believe the music video countdowns aren't in HD at least.
SPEED was one of the worst SD channels DISH had and it really made it difficult to watch much of their programming, with NASCAR events being some of the worst. I've had SPEED tuned in most of the afternoon and I'm loving it. Good things come to those who wait.

I agree with this, though it might take a little while longer.
A common theme I've seen in the lawsuits and failed negotiations threads has been conflict over either which package a channel will be placed in (FOX lawsuit) or monetary compensation. It would almost appear that Dish decided the extra variables of trying to iron out contracts across SD, SD+HD, and HD only plans wasn't worth the trouble anymore. I'm sure the channels that were first to market in HD were eager to sign contracts to establish their brand, but now that HD broadcasting is slowly becoming the norm the content providers aren't as eager to deal in contract negotiations, making the fragmented HD Only packages a liability when it comes time to renegotiate.
I liked the HD only plans; I've saved a bit of money subscribing to them over the last couple years. That said, I knew from the beginning that their days were numbered.

You are not understanding the math.
It is not that News Corp says " you better not put FoxNewsHD in Turbo ! " Why would they say that ? The more eyeballs, the more they can charge for their advertising.
It is that News Corp says " for every Turbo customer, we want $$ in fees ".
Dish had oriiginally priced the Turbo packages with a foolishly optimistic idea about channels giving them cut rate pricing for HD-only subscribers. In reality, the channels are now undoubtedly giving little or no discount, which means that Dish cannot price Turbo HD at any less than Classic SD + $10, without taking a loss.
That is why Turbo had such a big price increase, and why Dish is resisting adding all HD channels to it.
As far as what individual Dish representatives tell individual Dish customers, that varies so widely that it seems silly to characterize it.

Scott has reported that E* is aware of the Turbo problem and is working on a solution--whatever the heck that is. I hope that's true.

Im glad to see that there was finally an acknowledgment to the Turbo neglect, and its good to know they are working on something.

I agree that this is one possible scenario, but there is another. We all know providers love to bundle. This helps them get their crap channels on your TV screen in the off chance you'll watch it.
Now what happens if their bundle includes some SD+HD and some SD-only channels? They couldn't care less if Dish has an HD-only package. They just want to continue lying to their sponsors, claiming that everybody who can view their crappy SD channel does in fact watch it. This charge for fantom viewers certainly helps their bottom line, particularly if their crap SD channels are really cheap to produce. Frankly I think we have a lot of advertisers who are being milked like the cash cows they are.
If somebody in the industry would like to contradict me, please do so, because I'm just speculating on plausible scenarios.

I was hoping we'd get lucky after we got comedy and spike. I'd rather have speed than the other three. not sure why we got some and didn't get others, who knows with dish
Absolute includes the Platinum package so you get anything added to that. You also get anything added to the Turbo HD packages. Overall, the absolute subscribers are doing much better than the Turbo HD subscribers and without the large rate increase they were given.
