AL EAST 2009

Nomar has the same listed height and weight as Jimmy Foxx. I also remember him being displayed shirtless on the cover of a national sports magazine (Sports Illustrated, maybe?) a few years ago as an example of one of those athletes who was untra-dedicated to improving himself through weigth training. Has his name appeared on any of the PED lists yet?

Great lineup for the Sox tonight, Aaron Bates starts at first, Nick Green at 2B and Julio Lugo at SS (Pedroia is out of the lineup for "family matters".

Plotlines galore at the A's-Red Sox game tonight:

* Nomar makes his first ever appearance in an opposing uniform (he got a HUGEEEEEE ovation, BTW).

* Orlando Cabrera (ie. the player Nomar was traded for) was also in the lineup tonight for the A's (Cabrera himself got a huge ovation when he returned to Fenway in 2005 as a member of the Angels). O-Cab, of course, was a member of the '04 World Series team.

* John Smoltz made his first start at Fenway as a member of the Red Sox

* Matt Holliday made his first appearance at Fenway since game 2 of the 2007 World Series. But more importantly, many people think he will succeed Bay in LF in 2010 (I personally hope that doesn't happen).

All this and oh yeah there's a game going on............A's 4, Red Sox 0 bottom of 5th.

IMO, the Red Sox really need to add another bat!

I'm going to the game tomorrow night, I hope the bats wake up!!!!

I am sure you remember his great years in Boston very, very well. (Interestingly, in the prime of his career, the Red Sox were not the offensive juggernaut they have been recently. In those years, they didn't have players with high homer and RBI totals. To me, those Red Sox teams- 1999-2000- were a two-man team- Nomar and Pedro.

Did he get past first base?:D

Two words: Adam. Dunn. He's playing well, but his team is not.

We members on this site have had mixed success when going to live games- HD had great success at Cavs games, but was 0-2 at Browns game last year; Salsa at Raiders games; KCK at Ducks home playoff games, etc.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia left prior to Monday's game against the Athletics to be with his wife, Kelli, who sought medical attention in an area hospital. Kelli Pedroia is pregnant with the couple's first child, which is due in about seven weeks. After checking in on his wife, Dustin Pedroia returned to Fenway Park, but was told by manager Terry Francona to spend the rest of the night with his wife. Francona said that he did not know whether the second baseman would be available for Tuesday's game.

That's what I love about Tito, he has life's priorities in perspective. :up

6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF

Great story about Tito and the compassion he has for his players.

IMO, Tito, Joe Torre and Mike Scioscia are the three classiest managers in baseball.

Is it any coincidence that they are the three most successful leaders over the past 10+ years? I think not.

Terry Francona a born leader - BostonHerald.com

“The right decision was made,” he said, referring to Pedroia’s decision to go to the hospital and the manager’s quick and easy decision to go along with it. “He needed to be with Kelli, and she needed him. Now that she has some family here, I think he feels a little more comfortable, and I feel a little more comfortable with him being here. He’s a phone call away, and if he needs to leave we’ll do that.”

No Bates tonight:

1. J.D. Drew, RF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
4. David Ortiz, DH
5. Jason Bay, LF
6. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
7. Mark Kotsay, 1B
8. Nick Green, SS
9. George Kottaras, C
Tim Wakefield, SP

Blue Jays Release B.J. Ryan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 8 at 2:44pm CST]
The Blue Jays have released B.J. Ryan, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. The 33-year-old lefty signed a five year $47MM deal with the Jays before the 2006 season that was, at the time, the largest deal ever for a reliever. The contract expires after 2010, but the Jays still owe Ryan about $15MM.
Ryan dominated in 2006, striking out more than four times as many as he walked and allowing 30 fewer hits than innings pitched. However, he's been a major disappointment since missing 2007 with Tommy John surgery. He was effective last year, but has struggled in 2009, walking 7.4 batters per nine with a career-low strikeout rate and more hits allowed than innings pitched.

Gametime temp at Fenway: 56 degrees!

That would be wonderful......if it was April or October 8th, but JULY 8th!!!

Ortiz just hit a 3 run homer to stake the ace of the Red Sox staff to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 6th.

Ortix now has 41 RBI through 84 games. He only needs 59 in the remaining 78 games to reach 100 for the season. Who'da thunk it?

The Red Sox come into tonight's game at 38-25 and 2 games ahead of the Yankees in the AL East.

The Sox have had the toughest schedule record wise- by a WIDE margin.

Tonight starts the last 25 games before the ASB.

The Sox schedule tonight through the ASB (Home games in CAPS):

FLORIDA (3)
ATLANTA (3)
at Washington (3)
at Atlanta (3)
at Baltimore (3)
SEATTLE (3)
OAKLAND (3)
KANSAS CITY (4)

All of the above teams are currently below .500.

Hopefully the Sox can go 17-8 (or better) through this stretch, and go into the ASB with a very nice record of 55-33.

Okay, NOW the Sox have to sweep the Royals in the last four games pre-ASB to go 17-8 through this stretch. :p

Tim Wakefield wins #11.

IMO. it's a three-way between either him, Grienke, or Roy Halladay to be the AL Starter at the All-Star Game.

Huh???

As much as I respect Wake (and I respect him A LOT), he has next to no chance of starting the ASG.

IMO, it's between Halladay, Greinke, Verlander and Beckett.

If I'm Joe Maddon, I choose Halladay.

I don't think Wakefield even gets into the game unless it goes into extra innings (he would be the perfect guy to come in and pitch 2 or 3 innings if needed).

According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, Dustin Pedroia might skip the All-Star game to be with his pregnant wife.
Kelli Pedroia had complications with her pregnancy earlier this week, causing Dustin to miss one game. Ian Kinsler would make sense as a fill-in if he doesn't win the "final vote."

I agree with Sabres. Throwing out who will be rested and who won't for a second, I think the players who have earned the start are Halladay, Greinke, and Wakefield. And Wakefield starting would be a wonderful story, to not only pitch in your first all-star game at age 42, but also to start in it.
