or maybe Microsoft office problem. Im not sure. My son and I have identical laptops and Vista64 and office professional. My son can upload his assignments in word, excel, etc to the college website for submission to his teachers on my computer but it fails with his???? What the heck is going on? some file incompatibility when uploading from his machine and not mine? What setting is killing us here? We both have the same Norton 360 as well. I think he is running IE like me too

Comeon all you computer geniuses, this is a real pain.

What kind of upload "system" is this? Is this like Blackboard or something?

Check versions of Java on both machines. That could be it. I seriously doubt it is word.

Blackboard (assuming that is what he is using), is notorious for incompatibilities. I have students complain to me all the time, to which I have to tell them to either try a different browser, or go use a lab machine. :(

could be Java. Its not word because it fails with excel files and database files too.

If not Java, then check the browser settings and the firewall. Uploads are often done via some browser plugins. And those plugins can be disabled in the browser itself or can be blocked by your firewall (Windows firewall, Norton Internet Security, or whatever you have enabled on that computer). You can usually check the list of blocked programs in the firewall settings or logs.
