Plays that altered/changed sports history

If the Rangers don't let Mark Messier walk and join the Canucks, maybe the Rangers don't have that nightmarish seven year pre-lockout, pre-Henrik stretch where they threw money at every big name?

The 2009 NFL Draft, selection #5 overall. If the Browns don't trade their draft pick to the Jets who subsequently drafted Mark Sanchez, do they go onto having as much success as they did this year with Kellen Clemens?

Is that a play?

Not sure how related those things are. Messier actually came back after three years with Vancouver and was part of the seven year non-playoff run.

Mark Sanchez...Kellen Clemens...JAMARCUS RUSSELL...Conan O'Brien,...Paul Wozniak, it's been argued here ad nauseum, it's not about the QB, it's about the TEAM around him!

Sandra
i didn't know Wozy could still play QB???? :p:D anyway yes i agree. qb is important but at the end of it all its a team sport.

OVER-RATED! OVER-RATED! It was already a tie game at that point. Even if he fielded it, either team could have won.

Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU!!! :up

For over two decades, Bill Buckner has been the poster boy of the "Murphy's Law" Red Sox.

IMO, Buck wasn't even in the top 5 goats for that miserable October night at Shea.

In no particular order, John McNamara, Calvin Schiraldi, Bob Stanley, Rich Gedman and even Roger Clemens were all more culpable than Billy Buck.

Bucky Dent homerun in the 1978 playoff game against the Red Sox.

A certain 12 year old was there at Fenway, plotting the Sox rotation against the Royals in the ALCS.......................and then came Bucky Bleepin' Dent , Reggie Jackson, Lou Piniella and Goose Gossage.

Len Bias' cocaine snort doomed the Celtic for YEARSSSSSS

Yup, I have no doubt that the Celtics would have won another title or two if that didn't happen. :(

Having Bias would have perserved Bird, McHale and Parish more.

Who knows, the Celtics could be up to 20 championships as we speak..........

About that one-game playoff in 1978 that Bill mentioned earlier in the thread:

I did some research on that game. In retrospect, IMHO, a home run that Reggie Jackson hit later on turned out to be perhaps the most crucial hit of the game.

It gave NYY a 5-2 lead before Boston scored twice to make it 5-4.

If not for Reggie, then the game goes to extra innings. Maybe Boston wins, and Dent's homer becomes forgotten.

Yup, that ball that Reggie hit was crushed into the CF bleachers.

But IMO, it was Lou Piniella's play in RF (right in front of me) that saved the game for the Yankees.............

"Bird steal the in bounds pass from Isiah and flips it to DJ"

I was a young kid staying up late at night to watch that game and I thought after that we would never beats the celtics

Yup. Herschel was supposed to be th final piece of the Vikes SB puzzle. Jerry Jones really duped those idiots.
Jimmy Johnson deserves a lot of the credit for the deal, according to Johnson. ;)

"You can't blame Herschel," said former Vikings receiver Anthony Carter. "The ball was in Mike Lynn's hands, and it was one of the horrible trades in sports history. All the blame for that goes on one individual, and that's Mike Lynn. Sorry to say that, but it's the honest to God truth."

Lynn said this week that he "still hasn't figured out" how and why the Walker trade went so awry.

Lynn, however, was outmaneuvered by Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys' rookie NFL coach and the mastermind of the Walker trade. Johnson had a generous offer from the Browns in hand but used it to pressure Lynn into offering him an even sweeter deal before a 6:30 p.m. deadline on Oct. 11, 1989.

With the Herschel Walker trade 20 years ago, the Minnesota Vikings helped build a Dallas Cowboys dynasty | Cleveland Browns - cleveland.com - cleveland.com
