External Hard Drive Archive Bug Thread

Just got a WD Elements 1.5T EHD and upon plugging it in, got a message that the 211K was checking for compatibility and then error 955 that the drive has to be between 50GB and 1TB. Any thoughts?
Ask yourself where between 50 and 1,000 that 1,500 falls.

You'll find out about the firmware release when it starts happening if you keep an eye on this forum. DISH Network generally doesn't announce these updates.

After your serial number is enabled, you'll have to wait and see when your ViP211k actually gets the update.

Update. I opened the case and it contains a single drive, so that is not the issue. Also, the 211K is set to update automatically in the wee hours.
It has to be a firmware issue with 22K. I just bought the 1.5 TB element and it works perfectly fine with my 722.

Thanks. I will watch the forum. Meanwhile I''ll go to plan B and use the 1.5T as a backup to the raid array in my PC.

Help, my External Hard Drive (500 GB WD) which has been working fine for over a year and has about 350GB of recordings on it, showed as not attached on Sunday. After rebooting both the drive and my ViP622, the DVR is now recognizing it - but as a new drive and wants to reformat it! I don't want to click OK and hence loose all the recoding.... any thoughts on this?

I had the same issue long ago. I simply connected the drive to my XP laptop, launched drive management, let XP find the drive, then I did NOTHING. I canceled out of everything and connected it back to the DISH receiver and it found it, along with all of my recordings, as usual. I then proceeded to copy everything over to the internal HDD of the receiver and then used a newer EHD. I have since been using the original EHD with Windows (after reformatting, of course) without any problems. The EHD in question is an older model WD Essentials with the amber ring.

I don't know why this works, but it did for me. It actually happened twice before I quit using the EHD as a DISH EHD.

Am I correct in thinking that Dish DVR's require a USB EHD and DirecTV requires a esata EHD?
Yes. eSATA is typically more expensive (which makes little sense) and ideally quite a bit faster (though these devices probably don't challenge the capability). Finding the right combination can be very tricky. eSATA supports hot swapping but DIRECTV doesn't.

USB is everywhere and usually the cheapest. Many have claimed success using USB switches to choose between active drives. Hot swapping is a routine occurrence.

The differences come in the DVR integration and that's completely different; almost entirely in DISH Network's favor.

So bottom line. What is the best EHD for the 722?

Here we go again. Don't anyone say WD Essentials. He won't believe you.
No, not here we go again. The Essentials requires too much preparation to make it work. I don't want to have to disable "smartware" You say it's great and plenty of others say it's the worst EHD they have ever used. There are other threads on other sites discussing this question. Can I buy the Essentials 1.5 and just plug it in and use it?

Well,

I have one of the older models purchased last year Western Digital My Book Essentials and it works fine, (didn't have to disable any software).

When I go to buy another one I am going to get another WD Essentials and do whatever has to be done to disable the software, from what I have read during this entire thread it doesn't seem to be that difficult?

It isn't that difficult. I just purchased a second 1.5T essentials from newegg. It took all of 10 minutes to update the firmware and disable the smartware. For $99 it is an awesome deal and I would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks. Then, that indeed seems to confirm what I suspected, that Dishnet has not yet rolled out the firmware update for my receiver.

The WD Elements 1TB arrived yesterday and everything went smoothly. Recognized, called the automated Dish number to turn it on, and in less than a minute was able to format it, and check out the settings for pause, future program recording, etc.
