Perhaps, or they are just competing with Dish. Both companies do things like this to make them more enticing to subs than the other. This is a good thing. I am glad Dish did this, because I probably will not be getting free HD through Direct if it wasn't for Dish doing thisSounds to me like Direct is panicked!:up
Just remember that DISH is not the only one inflating their hd channel counts with Hd pay per views. DIRECTV too includes many hd pay per view channels- 27 and the brunt of their hd channels ,about 30 have yet to be launched yet. I counted only 114 actual hd channels on their website and added to the 21 pay per views, that comes to 141 so far.

No additional payment, Direct does not have that option. Paperless billing is also not a requirement for Direct as well. The only requirement is autopay, which I have had since the beginning with Direct (over 10 years). I did not have to change anything.
The other difference between the HD with Dish and Direct, besides the fact that Dish currently has a lot more HD (the difference will be near 0 soon), is that those that are getting free HD only have to pay $5 for the additional HD with Direct (HD Extra) and $10 for the additional HD with Dish (Platinum HD).
Whether you are a DirecTV or DISH fan, you gotta love competition. If not for competition, the push to offer more for less would not be likely. So if you like your DISH free HD, be happy that DirecTV is always right there to force Charlie's hand to stay ahead of the competition and offer this. If you are enjoying DirecTV free HD, thank DISH for forcing DirecTV to adapt to the changing field of competition.
This paperless billing resistance is funny. I still get most bills in the mail, but some are duped via e-mail. The paper versions never get opened...just shredded. Wasted time and resources.
I am signed up for paper less billing on all of my bills. I get emails with the bill there to be downloaded if I want to see it. This cuts down on the amount of crap I save for my tax returns.
Yes, it does cost more for the extra HD on Dish, but you also get more channels in it, and arguably channels that make it worth having.
My biggest problem with all of this is not that D* is competing against Dish with Free HD, it's that they always throw the first punch against the competitor. I know they both campare against eachother, but I always felt Dish's comparisons were a little more fair. I feel that D* takes a lot more cheap shots. They can both be misleading, but I think D* is worse. This is just my opinion though.
Well I am not going to complain that competition is lowering bills. I think cable finally forced both Dish/DIRECTV into giving free HD.

Nah! Don't think so....yet.I've only received 12 come back offers from DirecTV since I left in Oct.2009.
I agree except for one glaring fact that DIRECTV has right. IT DOES COST MORE with DISH for extra additional receiver fees. The difference between DIRECTV on its additional receiver fees- $5.00 for any extra receiver vs the varied pricing structure that DISH has come out with -$7.00 at the lowest all the way to $17.00 for extra dvr/receivers is striking in print comparison. When subs compare this on DIRECTV's website , this will scare many potential subs AWAY from DISH and to DIRECTV. Anyone that goes with DIRECTV and gets say 3 receivers, would only pay $ 10.00 extra a month. With DISH, it would cost you $14.00 a month if you just had a couple of extra hd receivers on your account and up to $34.00 extra a month ,if you had three dual tuner dvrs on your account.
One thing that's pretty obvious is that Charlie's got Directv playing defense lately after being on the other end of the chain for a few years. The HD channel claims and new channels, the free HD for life, it's clear that Dish is doing something right because Directv follows suit with press releases or changes in policy the next day or two following. I guess the new subs and the low churn would confirm that, he better ride it while he can.
Think you should add in the extra costs that DirecTV charges for SWM,MRV,DECCA when you get DirecTV HD?.Because unless you have it setup right it will not work right.
Why would you need MRV & DECA to watch HD ? Oh thats right...you dont
As for the SWM they will give you the upgrade if you need it along with the receiver with a 24 month agreement
