I have a HR20-100 HD-DVR with two ethernet connections. What is the purpose of two connections?

I currently have the DECA connected to the top connection. What happens if I disconnect the DECA connection and plug in wired ethernet to my router?

Can I still plug in the DECA to the bottom port?

Thanks,

I think I've read if you connect any Ethernet port on a DECA'ed receiver you will lose Internet connectivity.

I remember asking before that if you had a HR22 & HR23(like I do) & if you are using DECA adapters, could you attach the ethernet cable from the DECA adapter to a switch(& from the switch attach an ethernet cable to your receiver,& allowing use of the second ethernet port as a pass-through) & use it to operate other equipment from the other open ports of the switch(using the coaxial cable to network with your router instead of using long ethernet cables, powerline adapters,&/or wireless adapters). Obviously, you couldn't do this with a HR24 or H24(or,with the exception of not having the second ethernet port for pass-through,could you?).

Anyway,my point was that I never really got a definitive answer on that. One person said it should be possible. You see,I want to set up a MoCA network using the cable from my cable company that I get my internet from(Charter Cable). I have rooms without running cable for internet output, but I have D* cable for my D* receivers(& miles of ethernet cable hooking them up to my routers). Being able to use the DECA adapters to hook up a switch to run internet connections for my other toys instead of long ethernet cables, powerline adapters,&/or wireless adapters would be advantageous to me.

Theoretically it is possible, the DECA adapters are nothing more than a device that acts like a fiber transceiver but in this case cat5 to coax to cat5.... each device that has a built in DECA get's it's own IP address and does not use a single IP from the primary DECA that feeds to your network.... so putting in a small switch may work...

At the same time I just found out that having my DECA feeding my 2 HR24s could not be hooked up to my Cisco 2900XL series switch and had to be direct connected to my router... so with saying that the DECA adapters may cause the COAX network to operate like token ring from the old days and has to have a uninterrupted access to source and destination.

So in all I would say it is a 50/50 shot with the higher possibility that it will more than likely not work and the DECA can only talk to other DECAs and HR24s

I would only use this proposed set up with my HR22 & HR23 receivers because they would need a DECA adapter anyway. The HR24 that I plan on adding would only be hooked up to my network by coaxial cable to my router & would bypass any switch set-up in that room.
