RAYS will drastically cut payroll even if the win WS... Marlins 1997 dejavu?

That stadium is only 20 years old. The City of St. Petersburg built it (against the advice of MLB) to lure an MLB team from another city. They had the misfortune to build it just before "mallparks" caught on. Remember that the Giants were going to leave San Francisco in 1992 and play there.

As I remember, the Giants wanted to leave San Francisco to go there, and the city found a loophole to keep them. They are now playing in AT&T Park. Talk about blind luck!!

The White Sox ALSO threatened to move there as well...and that one almost worked too.

Where in the MLB Rules book does it say anything about the "Midget bugs " being illegal ? :D:D:D

Or is that another "UnWritten Rule " ? :D

Yes, resorting to insect warfare, although not specifically written into the rulebook, is very much frowned upon. :D

Playing for first place, Yankee's in town, can't sell out? This city doesn't deserve a MLB franchise. Move the team. We're selling more tickets in Detroit, and we're out of the race.

I think they could do a bit better if the stadium wasn't in the middle of nowhere. There were plenty of Rays frontrunners popping up in 08, but no one bothered going to games because if you live in Tampa its in the middle of nowhere, and if you live in Orlando, its twice as bad to go down.

Sorry, I just can't agree with this. Tampa just isn't a baseball town. And its, just like Miami, are making things worse by building (or trying to build) a new stadium. A lot more money spent for a team that can't sell out when in first place facing the Yankees late in the season just doesn't deserve to be in that city.

I am not dissing Tampa, as I love that city. I also, as a STL Cardinals fan, am flying down there next year to see the Rays/Cards series the first of July. I simply believe That part of Florida historically has had a mixed baseball fan base because of the spring training teams going down there way before the pro teams set up shop (Tampa and Miami are in the same boat.)

But fans of a team don't decide not to go to a game because the stadium is 20-30 miles out of the way. They also don't not go to a game because they can't get the premier food items that some other stadiums offer. FANS go to the games to see their team to play. They could play in a little league park 100 miles down the road and I would still go see my team play. Certainly if they were in the title hunt playing a team like the Yankees. That stadium should have a postseason atmosphere. Not struggling to pull in 29,000.

It's hard to build a fanbase with the reasons you listed. I agree with you on those. A few consecutive years of a good ball club has helped in all honesty though. The Marlins destroy their teams right after they won, which hurts. The team hasn't even been around for 20 years yet though, I think they need a few more years, a better stadium, and a better stadium location.

It really would help attendance if the stadium was in Tampa or even by the Bucs field imo

Us Yankee Fans will travel hundreds of miles to see them play. I.E. I travel up to Toronto to see Yanks/Jays Games (90 miles) and to Cleveland to see Yanks/Indians (180 miles). It sounds like that Tampa's Mgt thinks they don't need to promote their team and people will show up. It's a shame. Tampa has a good team and they should be selling out not only to the Yankees but for everyone else too.

You might travel that amount, but NO fan is going to travel that far on a regular basis.

Question....IF you were to move to Pittsburgh, will you be supporting the Pirates on a regular basis? No? I thought so. And there in lies the issue. In Florida, there are so many northerns and midwesterners that have migrated to the state, that almost 60% of the state were no originally born here or raised her. They bring their norther loyalties with them. IF you were to move, you will STILL be a loyal Yankees fan....no ifs, ands or buts about it.

Down here in Miami, they are almost 40% more fans when the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs and White Sox. Yes, there are THAT many folks down here from these areas.

Same thing happens in Arizona. Los Angeles is different...even though a lot of people have moved there from elsewhere, LA for the most part still has strong support from hometown fans.

Except football, of course, where they can't support a team even with the people who moved there from other areas!

Yeah....but LA and the surrounding areas have well over 6 million people...and that is within 30 minutes of downtown LA. AND that team has been there since the 50s, if I am not mistaken. The Rays have only been in Tampa since '93.

I lived in LA for three years...trust me, NOBODY in LA is within 30 minutes of downtown LA...not even those in downtown LA. ;)

They will never do well in that part of the state. I don't know if any of you know this but they did look at having the team between Orlando and Tampa when the looked for a location. It would have been a better idea. Near the old Boardwalk and baseball location near Winter Haven on 1-4.

They will do well...in a REAL baseball stadium. The place is awfull for ANYTHING. IF they had something legit, WORTH coming to watch a game.....they would drawn. BUT, the state already gave up a ton of tax money for the Marlins stadium...and then the Marlins ownership lying about money they DID have ....that would NOT bode well with politicians and tax payers....
