the loss of station is just the last straw. ive been contemplating leaving for some time
i want a second dvr withought being charged 17 a month for it.
i wanted to upgrade my 622, but didnt want to pay an arm and a leg.

nah ive got several reasons for leaving, it works for me.

It's been several years since I had "D" but I'm pretty sure that they offer a module that plugs into their DVR that is for OTA channels. Their original HR20 HDDVR was just like "E's" 722 and had the OTA plug incorporated in the DVR.

This is true but, you can still only record 2 shows at most with DTV. With Dish, you can record 3 at the same time as long as one is OTA.

And then there is the issue that if E* bends over for Fox, how soon before those new rates show up on those other providers. The handwriting is on the wall, they all want more money and they are all willing to do things you wouldn't have thought they would do, to get it.

Right...all these posts about switching.....Next up might be Direct...Then you switch to someone else and then its their turn....Then what?

I bought a harmony remote because:

(a) I am a tech geek
(b) to avoid getting those phone calls about the remotes/settings from women in the house.

Best investment ever if you have multiple settings to deal with.

A former lady friend gave me the nick name of gizm0man due to all the remotes I had in the living room. Big dish, little dish, 2 vcrs, dvd player, AVR and you had to use multiple remotes to change input. Now we can use 1 to turner on the TV and the AVR and then just use the dish remote..

I'll play devils advocate and say I would pay zero for FX and RSN because I have my RSN and I do not watch FX. My RSN is not affected and my local Fox is not owned by Fox. I am sticking sticking by DISH, but it does remind me to not sign another contract until things look a -lot- better on many fronts, including equipment. I was told that my contract is expired but thought it was through in May '11. Hey maybe it's another another DISH -oops-. It would be a huge mistake for DISH to have many of the big city Fox affiliate's pulled on Nov. 1.

so with DTV you can integrate the OTA and related channel guide into the receiver you just are still restricted to recording 2 shows at once, do i have that right?

i'm thinking of getting two HR24's- so basically i would have 4 available tuners all shared. record, watch any show from either of my two tv's -- correct?

For what it's worth...

I believe the locals are not currently at risk from what I've read. tvpredictions.com has some pretty interesting articles about the whole thing.

My two cents (w/c no one asked for): Charlie should drop all the FOX stations and channels and tell FOX that 16 million viewers will no longer be seeing their programming or advertising. I for one watch very little FOX programming anyway. So I won't miss it. But if they insist on a rate hike that will result in a higher fee from me, I'll be dropping my subscription as soon as it expires (damned contracts). I've lived most of my 39 years without cable or satellite. I imagine I could live the rest of my life without it and be none the worse.

At any rate I'm not gonna let it destroy my life or mental sanity regardless of how it all works out.

Switched to DTV

I just switched to DTV. #1 reason was $17 fee for two DVR's. My son switched to U verse. Sorry Charlie

I have been with Dish since 1995 through thick and thin-programming disputes are always worked out though some take awhile. To me, its all about loyality. Dish has never treated me bad and always worked with me with any problem I have had. It just doesn't make sense to go switching back and forth in the television business, and crying because you cant get the channels you want. The more people who leave cause harm to Dish and their efforts to go after the NFL or other channels that DTV has and vice versa===Loyality is cheap now days.

Correct. I'm getting 2 of the HR24 HD DVRs. I opted not to get the AM21 add-on for OTA since... well if I can't get an extra tuner by using it, I may as well just go OTA to my TV and use it as a backup. The channel guide is still going to be on the satellite guide since I'll have locals on satellite as well.

You *could* get the AM21 just as a convenience so you have OTA and satellite in one guide. Maybe I'll add them later. Just didn't see a need right now.

There is a commercial out about Cablevision might be losing local Fox affiliates on OCT 16th. Wasn't it Time Warner who was at war with ABC, and people missed the Acadamy Awards?

Well you do what you gotta do, it's incredibly short sided to think this crap isnt going to continue with all providers though.

I disagree. What's to stop any programmer from demanding increases of any size they wish?
Programmers have us over a barrel. They know that to a good amount of folks tv is life and death. That is real. I can tell you as a former tech, I have run into people who cannot stand to be without tv. They will pay up no matter what.
Example. When Lifetime Networks and Dish had their spat four or five years ago, Dish got flamed with over half a million complaints and about a quarter million cancelled and churned.
I see no end to this.
However as with anything else, once the consumer gets to the pooint where they say ENOUGH!. I am not going to pay for this anymore!", the programmers will have to react. How long that will take, no one knows.
I am going to miss these RSN's. If they don't come back, I will adjust.

Here's the rub. Dish cannot sumarily "drop" all Fox chanels. These companies have a contract that compels BOTH parties to honor the deal.
Nice thought though... Dish playing hardball.

Loyalty is a two way street. Nobody is crying because they can't get the channels they want. We're pissed because we already had the channels we wanted and are happy to pay for. Now they are gone and we are still paying for them. Is FOX being unreasonable? Maybe, but WE sure don't know that. Lets face it, Charlie and FOX has been at each others throats for a long time. I just don't appreciate them trying to one up each other at my expense.

Then you pay ANOTHER Early cancellation fee and wonder why you can't get ahead in the world...because of TELEVISION.

I canceled my cancellation.

But this episode did motivate me to take a hard look at my bill. I sent back a seldom used SD DVR saving $17 a month. And dropped down a level in channel packages saving $10 a month.

Not that this was supposed to be an exercise in saving dough but it did open my eyes. And by bill is close to 30% less as a result.

Good for you. Smart choice. I also will be sending back a DVR we don't need as soon as I get the HDMI cable I need to share one receiver with two rooms. There are just two of us here, and we never watch two TVs separately of each other. When the whole receiver increase started, it amazed me how many receivers people had that they did not need. Maybe if people started really analyzing their viewing habits, they might come to the same conclusion.
