Hey guys i'm new over from Dish Network and I just had my Directv install yesterday. Today I "moved" from Erie, PA to Columbus, Oh in order to recieve HD locals until the Erie Pa ones go live. The locals show up just fine on my guide and when I switch to them I get a strong picture for about a minute or so and then they steadily start to drop out little by little, getting a worse and worse picture until after about 10 minutes the channel goes blank and I get a searching for satellite signal message. From what I understand I should be in the Spotbeam for Columbus up in Erie (I did the same move over the summer with Dish network in order to recieve all the Cincinnati Reds games, and had no issues whatsoever). Is there something I'm missing? Is there some setup I have to change in order to get these channels with a strong signal? All of my national channels, as well as NFL Sunday Ticket work just fine with no issues whatsoever. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks Guys!

Just to clarify the term "Fuzzy" I mean more of dropping in and out of signal. Very blocky, like dropping a bad signal from a OTA antenna.

The spot beams from dish are probably bigger that those for DirecTV.
You most likely are on the fringe of the beam.
Check the signal strengths.
A slight tweak in alignment might help.

Erie is well within the spot beam for Columbus. Like jdspencer said, your dish likely needs adjusting.

What is your Signal Strength on the 99 sat tp 22 ?

I wont be able to check the signal strength until tomorrow as I am out of town with the wife for the evening. I'll post it tomorrow once I get a look at it. I would rather not mess with the dish, as I dont know much about it and I'm not really sure how far/ which direction to move it in. I really dont want to mess with my signal and screw up the rest of my channels like the locals are. Could there be any other troubleshooting that I could do? Are the Columbus locals on a different satellite than my Erie locals?

I think the dish peaking answer is all the troubleshooting info you need until you try it or get someone to do it for you. Especially since you are out of town with the wife and you can't mess with it, anyway you should focus on her and your trip right now. LOL ;)

Haha, I'd like to but I've been waiting a long time to get Directv and was very excited by how easy it was to "move" in order to get the HD locals. Very disappointed right now that it was not working. If I was to move the Dish would I have to move it far to get the channels without an issue? And if I did move it, is there a chance that when the Erie locals are turned on and I "move" back that I will not have a good signal for those channels? I would assume the installer would give me an ideal signal strength when he installed the dish?

If you can tell us when you get time the SS on the Sat and TP I posted above, that will tell us a lot about what may need to be done.

Your numbers may be very good and your on the edge of the spot beam, or there may be other issues, won't know till we have your input tomorrow.

Thanks alot Jimbo. I will be home early tomorrow afternoon and I will post the numbers then. I really hope I can get this up and running.

Patience is the first thing .... and I would NOT try to move the dish, I would look for a local installer or D* to make the adjustments, seeing your not sure about all this stuff.
The Sats are 22,000 miles up and the location can be lost easily if you loosen the bolt(s) and make an adjustment.

Seeing you just got it installed, if it turns out to be a dish pointing issue, call D* back and have them fix it.

That could be a problem since he "moved" to Columbus! ;)

I agree jimbo...id rather not move the dish myself. I guess my next question would be then if it is a dish pointing issue would it be the same issue for erie locals as it is for the columbus ones?

I think your on the edge of the footprint, if you had Erie locals it would be solid in your area, but not in Columbus.

I don't think a repair guy is going to really care about what locals he's getting.
Probably gonna go right to the SS screen, check the numbers and adjust the dish.

True, but he can't call in, he'll have to get a tech on his own.

I suggest to everyone when moving check your signal on that markets local before you do it. The market I chose is s 95 vs s 100 on my true spot for my area. I also get another spot beam that will be there certain times of the day and gone at other times. I figure as the satellite moves in the figure 8 box I get some illumination here and there. I would never choose the markets on that spot.

You can adjust for a spot beam's transponder but some of your conus will suffer. Another option is to use a bigger dish. I would say limit your new market to no more than 100 miles away unless you want conus only with NY or LA.

Ok guys here are my numbers...on sat 99° (s) tp 22 I have a 0 signal this morning. Obviously I'm out of columbus spot beam. Where would a good place to"move"to from erie as it appears I'll have to move back to the erie locals. Would cleveland be a possible destination? Again thanks all for any and all help

Ok well I never thought of it until now but I decided to try out the sd versions of the locals and those work just fine. Apparently those must be on a different tp? I still would like hd though

Like I posted earlier, you should be well within the hd spotbeam. You should try getting your dish realigned. BTW Jimbo, are you sure it's 99 t22? The Satmaps say the Columbus hd locals are on 103. bigjotto316, what are your signal levels on 103 transponder 22?
