Let's me start off by saying that I like my privacy, I don't want any of my receivers connected to the Internet sending back information to Directv.

That being said,

I have 3 x Hr23 in my home, connected to a SWM, the SWM model where I have just one line coming in to the house and from the switch in the house it then goes out to my receivers.

I want the ability to continue watching a show on one receiver on any other in the house.

1.Can I order this functionality online, is it just software?

2. It sucks we have to pay for this on a monthly basis, what a money grab, is it still $3/month and it is 3$ for the household right and not $3 per receiver?

3. If it is hardware, can I install it myself, I don't want a tech doing it.

4. I already have Network jacks in all my rooms connected to one router, can I have the MRV functionality without without having the receivers connecting to Directv? Can you walk me through setting this up please.

5. Are you guys happy with the service, is it seamless?

6. Did they throw in any advanced features, is the scheduling any more advanced, for example from one receiver can I manage the season manager on a different receiver? For example, my wife like work out routine shows, if we are watching TV and see a new one to record, I would like to throw over the recording to the receiver in the work out room.

Thanks guys, I appreciate any help you can give me here.

You can connect the receivers via Cat5 and a router, but aren't you connected to the internet through the router? Directv could probably see your equipment anyway. The $3 fee is per house, and isn't supported by Directv this way. You have to connect with the DECAs to be supported.

I believe I should be able to block internet access to these receivers from the router, can anyone tell me you can define them with a fixed IP?

What are these DECAs and why are they required if you can setup via network cable and router?

Do the DECAs hooked up via Network cable too?

Ok. Since they goofed on my installation, I have some insight to this. Despite what DirecTV tells you, you do not need any telephone or internet connection. When you don't, you cannot use Video on Demand or movie rentals with the remote control (since the box cannot validate your order to billing). But, you can use whole home DVR, (it works beautifully without an external internet connection) and you can use the internet (via browser) to schedule recordings remotely. If you have multiple High Def receivers and only one DVR you can schedule recordings on the receivers that will record on the DVR. If you have multiple DVRs (like I do and it appears you do) you can only schedule the recording on the DVR you are watching. But, you can playback any recording on any DVR or HD box. And you can order movies via the internet that will record on your designated DVR via phone or browser.

I know this because I wired an internet connection to my front room for the Cinema Connection installation, but they did not have it on the work order. So I did not get an internet connection. But, I did have MRV on the order and that worked just fine (after the tech did some rebooting). When I called DirecTV's technical support they wanted to know why I wanted the Cinema Connection kit. As I walked through what I wanted to do, they gave me all the answers I have written here. I installed my own Cinema Connection kit but it slows my DSL so much that I keep it disconnected most of the time. All the other features I mentioned work just swimmingly. Just forget any external connections. All the MRV is carried over the coax (but, you do need to have the white DECA boxes for the H23/HR23 receivers. I think you can get those free by just calling Direct.

Please let us know how this works for you.

Guys, how does the Physical DECA quipment work VS Network cable and router option? Does the DECA not require a Home Networking Setup (Router + Networking cable to each receiver)?

Can someone also please tell me how the receivers show up on your router as, can I define their physial address somewhere in the receiver settings? and maybe ts way I can not allow them external access in my router settings.

I can't be the first in this paricular situation.

What sort of information do you think Directv will get that could be so bad?

Yes, you can manually enter the network settings on the receiver. You will then add a rule in your router to block outgoing traffic from that particular IP address. I don't know what you wish to accomplish by blocking the outgoing traffic though, some features might not work if you do that.

Guys, how does the Physical DECA quipment work VS Network cable and router option? The DECA inserts/extracts the internet signals to/from the coax to a cat-5 twisted pair cable.

Does the DECA not require a Home Networking Setup (Router + Networking cable to each receiver)? The DECA is simply a converter. It does not REQUIRE a connection to your home network to support Multi-Room Viewing. Connection to an external network is only necessary for ordering PPV movies wth your remote control and Video on Demand.

Can someone also please tell me how the receivers show up on your router as, can I define their physial address somewhere in the receiver settings? The receivers show up individually on your router table - if you connect them to your router, which you do NOT have to do.

I can't be the first in this paricular situation. Yes, you are. Most people that don't want D* to see what programs they watch just don't connect their system to the internet. Why you are going through all this to put your system on the network and then individually block it is very confusing, to me at least.

Guys, sorry I was trying to be discreet. The reason I can’t connect the receivers to the internet is because I'm in Canada, I have a totally legit subscription which I pay for on a monthly basis. I've heard that plugging in the receivers to the Internet will most likely result in the cancellation of the account as would plugging the receivers to a telephone line.

So now that you have the full picture, how would you recommend I set up MRV, MRV to me is one of those things that once you start using you wonder how you ever lived without it, much like the PVR itself.

Thanks everyone.

You can connect the HR23s to a Ethernet switch that isn't connected to your router and keep everything off the Internet. You can also use DECA adapters to set that up but it will likely cost more. Either way, the installation will be noted as "unsupported" and it will cost an extra $3/month for the account.

Both methods require Ethernet cabling but neither need involve your LAN.

There isn't any such thing as a "legit" Canadian subscription and I'm sure most don't appreciate being lied to about your motives.

oh please
how many around here have "moved" to get locals from another state??? i don't see this drastically different. and he is paying for the service. besides if you stopped sticking your nose in so much of the directv threads then you wouldn't have been offended by the OP. you can find plenty of things to get offended about in the Dish threads. :p

I never lied about anything, I said I didn't want my receievrs connecting to the Internet and then someone asked me why and I answered them so that my request would make sense.

OK thanks for all the replies, I did some googling and I think I undertand I now betweent hat and the replies I received.

Just a reminder I have 3x HR23 and a SWM5 Dish and an 8 Port switch.

I know the DECA will cost more but I like the idea of it not being connected to my home network.

1. So all I need to buy is one Deca device, is there a specific model I need for my setup?

2. The Deca will plug in to a port on the 8 port switch and that's it? as simple as that?

3. Do I need any other type of Adaptors, either between the SWM and the 8 switch port or betwen the 8 switch port and the receiver? It is confusing because some diagrams did show devices in between.

4. Can I just order the DECA off of ebay and Will Directv le me do my own DECA install?

5. Can I request the MRV turn on from the online site once I installed the DECA?

6. Once Directv turns on DECA, is there a new option that shows up inmy settings and will it need to be configured for each receiver?

Thanks again for everything.

you can order what you need off of ebay and do it your self.

Would I need one of these Adapters or 3 of them (one for each of my HR23 PVRs)? does it get hooked up at the 8 port switch or does it get hooked in to each receiver and then the coax goes in to the DECA at each receiver? Do I have to connect th Ethernet Wire as well back to the wal plug if I don't plan on using the system on the net? Will I need anything else?

DIRECTV DECA 1MR0-01 HOME ADAPTER MULTIROOM VIEWING MRV | eBay

Or could I use one of these devices instead (without connecting it to a router), would this device plug in to the switch without the need to put Decas on all the receivers?

Or what about abot a Band Stop Filter

Or a Power Supply, do I actually need powersupply and if so, how many? 1 for each DECA? My SWM8 Switch already has a power plug in it.

This stuff is really confusing for a MRV newb.

Not sure what I need.

Rockstead,
At this point it is clear that you are very confused on this whole subject. You really need to research this a lot more. If you would do that research you would know that the WHITE DECA is what you need. You do not want the black one. That is designed for connecting your system to the internet not for linking the receiver to the SWM network. But, I am beginning to believe that you are at a great risk of making things work even if you buy the right equipment since you don't seem to know much about networking and you have to know how to reboot the whole SWM network to make this all work. If you take the time to research this topic on other threads in this forum you will find the answers to your questions. But, right now you will only have more trouble if you just hook things up and hope for results.

Wouldn't it have just taken less time to tell me that all I need is 3 White DECAs and then tell me how to reboot the SWM network. Seriously I've helped tons of people, everyone is a NEWB at some point.
