Hi everyone! Getting ready to jump back into DN from cable. I've been a customer on and off for about 10 years or so and own all my gear. One thing I'm curious about.. my 6000 box would receive OTA signals without DN service as long as it was recieving a signal from the satellite. Is that still the case with Dish HD products or is a sub required now? I'm thinking about a ViP222. (The 6k is long gone but still have my venerable 501 :D.)

I'm a long time lurker in the forums and a satellite nut from the C-Band days.

Just a vip222? Have you considered getting a DVR like the vip722k? (I know the 501 is a DVR, but as mentioned earlier, they won't activate it again)

FIRST plan on leasing your new equipment it dosen't cost any more per month.

SECOND a 222 is HD only on TV1 SD on TV2 all new/replacement TVs will be HDTV think about two 211s.

THIRD like others I would recommend a 722K DVR even if TV2 is SD.

Yes they still do activate them as well as many other legacy receivers.

They activated my 501 and 301 no problem. Just had to send out the new cards. I just missed the last swap before I deactivated them.

Dish told me I don't qualify for any upgrades so thought I'd pucrchase the 222 to replace the 301 and pick up another tuner. Im only on the Welcome pack for now so that may be why. The 501 is for the wife. She can't tell the difference.

rfguygg,

Depending upon the receiver you get, the K-series VIP receivers and 922 require a module, which enables you to get OTA channels. The other receivers have a built in port for an OTA antenna. With a DVR duo receiver with an OTA module, you can record 2 satellite channels and 2 OTA channels at the same time giving you 4 recordings at the same time, of course if you are recording 4 programs at once you must watch what is being recorded or you can stop the recordings to view different channels. The first receiver is included with the programming package price. Any additional receiver has a monthly charge from $7 to $17. There is a $6 per month DVR charge. The HD programming package is $10 per month but you can get HD Free For Life at no charge. If you have further questions, please let me know. Thanks.

Ray C, the VIP 211K does not have an OTA module, it has a built-in single OTA tuner. I just wanted to clarify that.....

I'd also recommend the 211, maybe 2 of them.

They can be converted to DVR with a onetime $40 fee per account and also have no DVR fee.

2nd 211 will be $7 per month.

222 cannot be converted to a DVR.
