Is the HR24 and H24 the best one? Im in the process of ordering service and figure this is my one shot to get what I want. The rep said something about the 25 series? However it seems as though this came out 1 year ago so I wasnt sure

Thanks all!

HR24 is the best dvr right now. i can't tell you about receivers because all i have is dvr's. now i think the H24 is the one thats pretty compact. someone will correct me if i'm wrong

actually, they are offering the hr34 to new customers in selected area

from an email from directv
"The Home Media Center HD DVR is currently available only to new DIRECTV customers in select markets and only by phone."

Yeh I read about the HR34 but seemed it wouldnt be out to majority of markets till 2012. I will certainly inquire though.

H25 is a very small receiver
as for DVR's HR24 is the newest but with the HD GUI coming out most of the DVR's have the same speed now. My R22 is blazingly fast

i don't know why that hasn't been my experience with the HR20 :/ the moment the HR34 is available to me, that hr20 is going into the dumpster. i own it so i'm going to destroy it. pass the hr24 into the bedroom and the HR34 will have its new home in the family room :D

Ditto; the HR22 is a great unit; esp with the new GUI. Nothing wrong with these units at all. NOW, that being said; what out there in the trucks and what you get may be whatever they have on hand.

My install was done yesterday and I got an HR24 and 3 H25's. The H25's are very small boxes. When I saw them I told the installer my wife was going to love them. Big change from the 722 and 222's they replaced. Right now the H25 in our office is on top of my desk, but I may move it to a spot inside my rolltop. So far about the only thing I have had time to watch was last night's ballgame, so I really haven't done a lot of channel surfing etc.

in terms of the HD Receivers, is there also a H24? How does H24 stack up to H25? Assuming a perfect world where DTV allows me to pick what i want lol

Thanks

H24 is regular size (like the other units)
H25 is book size (about the size of a paperback book)

H24 can use any dish setup
H25 has to be SWM (single wire) setup

H24 has a bunch of connections (hdmi, component, a/v)
H25 is HDMI only unless you get the component "cable" that attaches to it

Don't they make a multiswitch so you can use a SWiM receiver on a non-swim dish like this one?

yes you can but unlike the other receivers that can just have BBC connectors slapped on to get HD the H25 can ONLY use SWM....

and in the above case you need 4 lines from the dish to the switch. So unless you have some older receiver it isnt practical. Because if you have the older LNB setup and more than 2 DVR's or 4 receivers you need a 6x8 switch and 2 lines to each DVR. So you'd swap the 6x8 for that but then you'd have the splitter right by it too....kinda overkill again unless you have some old receivers

True, and that switch is like $150.

I was a little concerned when I looked at the back of the H25 and didn't see any component connnections, because two of my tv's are a little older and don't have HDMI connections. The installer said not to worry, he would get a couple of "serial" cables. Went out to his truck and came back with two cables which certainly look neater than three component cables and two audio.

Ya. The H25 has an "A/V out" connection. The serial connection you speak of is a mini din 10 connection. I can't find any online. Might call directv and ask for a spare. Always good to have a spare.

Nice cable. About the thickness of an HDMI cable and then at the end breaks into the leads for the component and audio connections. Makes things look much neater than what I had previously.

For a non-DVR HD receiver, H24 is the only way to go.

Also, the H24 has a sleeker smoother front with touch screen type buttons, the H25 has regular old push buttons. The H24 actually looks more modern than the H25.

The only advantage I see to a H25 is if you're going to use a UHF remote and "hide" the H25 behind the TV between the TV and a wall mount.
