Hi guys, I am new to the forum and Direct TV. I came over from Comcast since I heard from a friend that Direct TV is better. I have been here for over 1 year so far. Overall I do like Direct TV better than Cable.

When I first signed up and receive DTV everything was fine. But in the past few months, my HD DVR receiver is getting slower and slower. I used to hear from people that the response time for changing channel was a few seconds however I was getting almost instant response so I was pretty happy.

Anyway, I went overseas for a month about a few months ago and when I came back I found that my receiver now have about 5-6 seconds delay. The delay is there even when I access the programs that was recorded on my HD DVR. Right now when my contract time is up, I am thinking about going back to cable where there is no lag time. I called tech support and they told me that my 5-6 sec lag time is normal and just try to live with it. I would probably accept this if this was always the case however I had fast response time when I first got the service plus when I was waiting for my car detailed, their waiting room has Direct TV and it was instant response time.

Here is my setup

Receiver: HD24/200
Software: 0x4d2, Sun 11/13, 12:27a

I am not good at computer so I need a clear detail how to do things on DTV.

If I can't get my lag time down then I am going back to cable since it is driving me crazy.

PS, I did find out that my Native is off, screen format is pillar box and bar color is gray if that helps.

Thanks for any help in getting my lag time back to where it was a few months ago.

1. In the same place you found NATIVE, PILLAR, GRAY; change to NATIVE OFF, ORIGINAL, BLACK

2. Open the front panel door on the receiver where the card is and press and release the red button.

3. Wait for the unit to reset and reply if that helped.

I agree with your assessment, but I would recommend he reset twice, back to back, that has helped in other cases.

Also, I'm guessing he doesn't have the new HD Gui as that picks up the speed considerably.

There are several workarounds (even more than have been covered here) but if you're a hardcore surfer, it isn't going to get much better going forward.

Most have forgotten what surfing is as they effectively use DVRs to watch what they want, when they want.

That being said, I think it may be romantic memory that you recall that things were so much better with Comcast.

But since you have DIrectv you know this right? Yeah thats what I thought

For the original poster, do the double reboot. My R22 had the same thing where it got slow for some reason. A double RBR (red button reboot) fixed it and its back to being nice and fast :)
press the red button on the receiver and let it go through the whole thing (including the guide)....once you have a picture on the screen of the channel then redo it again

I mentioned the same thing in post 3, just didn't go into as much detail.

Thanks guys for all the help. I set my color to black and pushed the red reset button then after I got a picture, pushed the red reset button again but I am still getting the same lag time.

Is there any way I can do the HD GUI update? If so, can someone tell me how to do it? I am hoping that this will make the lag better. I like everything about the DTV except for the long lag time I get every time I change channels. Thanks

Did you change the resolution settings also, as posted? Just changing the color of the bars will have no effect.

and unless I am totally mistaken it is totally natural for a bit of delay on a DVR thus allowing some program to be placed into the live buffer. for live pause, rewind, capture in entirety if the user decided to REC, etc

but that being said my units changes in the matter of 1 second or so; not 6 seconds

I would be very happy with 1 sec lag. It was that way when I first got DTV over a year ago. Then within the last 4 months, the lag is getting longer and longer. Even when I was strolling down the TV guide, it would just sit there for about 6 sec or even longer, then it would move.

The DVR does need to buffer so it does take a little longer than a receiver. My H23 is pretty qucik channel change while the DVR takes a whole second to 2 more (oh no!) ;)
