I am wanting to install my own dish onto my shop so I can get service in my shop. I currently have 2 coaxial lines ran from inside the shop to the exterior. Will I need more than 2 cables? What dish should I use to be able to accept HD signals? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

:welcome to Satelliteguys!

Two cables will let you use both tuners in a dvr. If you have a receiver, only one is necessary. Depending on which satellite your local hd channels are on, you would need a Slimline dish with either a 3 or 5 lnb. Why not let Directv take care of the installation?

Because the shop is on the same lot as my house but more than 100 feet away. We don't want to trench a cable and loose quaility. So we want to put an extra satellite on the premises to get tv to the shop. I thought the 3 lnb needed 3 cables to function. Also will the 3 lnb work with any directv box?

If you are getting a non-swm lnb, they come with 4 cables. You'd connect two of the four cables to your DVR if that's what you have, you only need to connect one cable if you only have a non-dvr receiver. The swm lnb is the way to go in that it only has one cable coming out which you can hook up to a swm splitter if you have more than one receiver. With the swm lnb you only need to hook up one cable to each receiver, both DVR & non-dvr. With the four cable lnb,if you have hd tv,you'd need b-band converters, two for an hd dvr,& one for an hd non-dvr receiver.
Wouldn't it be easier just to call D* & ask them if they could set it up? Somebody else would have to confirm this, but you might could get a business account set-up for your shop versus home account set up for your house. You'd probably have to have to separate accounts anyway, but someone else needs to confirm this.

IF the shop is only 100 ft or so away, burying the right cable (solid copper center conductor burial cable) would probably be your best bet. At that distance it should work just fine. No dish expense and alignment hassles, no dish configuration changes to make, etc. If burial cable not available then $12-15 worth of PVC conduit will protect it from moisture. Plug and play.

The shop is about 250 ft. Directv doesn't want to do it unless it is within 110 ft. I just hate to trench that long of a run.
