What happened to regular software updates?

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean its not correct. I do agree with you that there should be an option to force the guide to default to the list you want. I've passed this suggestion along to Dish in the past so we'll see if it ever changes.

lucky86,
I'm glad to hear that you made a suggestion to Dish about allowing an option to set the default listing by the subscriber. I think what upsets me the most is other systems offer you to bring up your favorite guide by just hitting one icon, like a star or heart, but with Dish it takes bringing up a list of "guides" and scrolling down to the one you want and clicking on that. I know were only talking a few more seconds here, but again it shows an inconsistency in how Dish does stuff. Dish has, I think, one of the easiest ways to set up a favorite list, but then complicates being able to use the list you made.

Don't get me wrong, I've been very happy with Dish on a whole, and feel the Hopper is one of the best DVRs out there, but IMO, defaulting to "My Channels" needs to be changed.

Take care,

It makes perfect sense. Dish was problably tired of people calling them about "missing channels" or channels they think they subscribe to that they in fact do not. A lot of people leave their guides on ALL HD and call in wondering where the rest of their channels have gone. Or they set it to ALL CHANNELS and wonder why they have green in the guide telling them to upgrade. So from a business aspect, I would say it makes completely sense for them to make that change so that they reduce the amount of money spent on fielding calls from customers who really don't have an issue but its more education than anything else. That also frees up their call center agents to receive calls from people who actually have technical issues that need to be resolved.

Makes no sense. If you take the time to set up a list, and save it as a default, do you think I'm going to forget that next month?

On the other hand, if a customer sees green and calls to upgrade, don't they make more money?

I disagree. If anything Dish should allow which "Guide" the subscriber can set to default. I would think most people who take the time to set up their favorite have enough know how to realize what channels they subscribe to. Think about it, you can't have a favorite list without adding the channels yourself. Dish does one of the easiest ways of setting up your favorite list. And the "My Channels" listing is available to double check to see if you have a certain channel or not.
Having a favorite list that you can't set to default is just dumb, IMO.

I think you are overestimating the intelligence, technical acumen, and troubleshooting initiative of the average TV watcher. The fact that you are on this board means that you are in the top 1% of technically aware Dish customers.

Do I think that YOU will forget? No. Do I think that the average consumer will? Absolutely. I bet it happens all the time. Even if you don't forget, will your wife or kids understand when they sit down and turn on the TV and can't find the Oprah channnel? If it even cuts 0.5% of their customer call center volume it is a no brainer from a business perspective.

I think my point is being missed, and what you posted goes along with what I'm saying. If the average TV is not that technical, then I would think they wouldn't bother trying to set up a favorites list. They would just be happy with the "My Channels" listing. But a TV watcher who has enough know how to bother to set up a favorites list, should be able to get the channels in it the they want (cause of the simple way Dish has to do it,) and set it to default.
I'm not the most technical one here, but after had set up my favorites list on the Hopper, it took me a couple of days to realize "My Channels" is the default. I was, and still not a happy camper about this.

Another negative about having "My Channels" as the default w/o a way to un-default it is the case of my cousins. They are two ladies in their early 60s. They have Comcast I believe, and their guide defaults to the equivalent of "My Channels". Each time they sit to watch TV they have to scroll past a hundred channels they don't watch ever, to get to what they want. A whole bunch of sports, Spanish (nothing wrong with Spanish channels if you speak it,) kids cartoons, religious, and HD/SD of all HD channels. While I was visiting them, I set up a favorite listing with only the channels they watch, and all those channels I made sure were the HD version. Now all they have to do is click on the little heart icon and they have their favorite listing pop right up! They love it. If they had Dish, the couple of extra steps to get to their favorites listing would be enough to make them not use it must. But knowing that all they have to do it click on the heart, they can handle that very easily (and they can remember it easily too! LOL.)

Exactly my aunt calls me on a weekly basis "ALL OF MY CHANNELS DISAPPEARED" I go is the top of your screen yellow and say HD she goes yes then I go press guide until it says all sub, and I do this on at least a weekly basis, every week sometimes twice a week. She has 722's so I can see dish's point.

that could still be resolved in the software so that the the default setting is in one of the options rather than in the guide itself. Someone at Dish just has to think outside the box a little...

S229 on all H's, S278 on all J's now

. Now for the hardware...

Morning guys!

Just putting the finishing touches on our Hopper OTA First Look series! I had it all written up already but a number of the screens changed so I did all new screen shots last night showing complete setup, and since some of the OTA channels take overnight for the guide data to fill in I had to wait until this morning to grab the full shots of the guide filled in. :D

It will be up shortly!

Sad to say there appears to be no manual timers in this update :( . Was hoping to see the ability to change the nightly update time as well. Other than that I can't wait for the OTA hardware (and the first look of course!) This software also seems to run a bit smoother than any of the previous versions. The recycle bin feature is awesome too, I definitely will be utilizing that functionality!

Still no manual timers :/ . Recycle bin feature is already useful! When you delete things they are stored under "Deleted Recordings" for the next 48 hours. You can also restore them if you want. Deleting recordings instantaneously gives you more space, even though they are not 100% deleted. In other words, once stored in the "recycle bin" the recordings no longer occupy the users' recording space, unless restored.

Still no ability to change nightly update time : / . However the menu system has been improved in which now you can individually select recordings to delete/add to folder from within the sub-menu e.g. "Folders by Title" when you click on a show with multiple entries, once in the sub-menu (list mode) you can now "edit" just like in the top menu. The menu options for the colored shortcuts are also more colorful now. Instead of having a colored dot next to each menu option the menu options are now entirely colored.

One minor bug, on the Joeys, pressing INFO twice while viewing live TV no longer reveals which sat you are currently tuned into.

OTA options are indeed now included with the new software.

Overall, the newer software also feels smoother than any of the previous iterations.

So jealous, I have not been updated yet. :-(

has anyone watched through the top and bottom of the hour to see if the dropout is still there? this should really be tried from both Joey and hopper as I find it is a little more pronounced on the Joey's.

I will have to find a sacrificial lamb recording to see if they have fixed the transfer issue.

I wonder how wide they are going on this release.
