DISH Press Conference Notes

Here is the updated pricing structure for new and existing customers for the new Hopper with Sling.

New Customers:
1st Hopper with Sling $199 (Customers subscribing to AT 120 or higher or DishLatino Plus may be eligible to receive an instant $199 credit)
2nd Hopper with Sling $199
1st Joey $0
2nd Joey $0
3rd Joey $0
4th Joey $99 (Must have a second Hopper)

Existing Customers:
Fist Hopper $200 for most customers an $300 for some
Second Hopper $200 for most customers and $300 for some
1st through 4th Joey $0 for most customers and $50 for some (4th Joey only available for 2 Hopper accounts)

Retail price for the new Hopper with Sling is $449

That's a pretty massive bump compared to $50 (or free) for 1 "old" Hopper and $100 for 2.

At that upgrade price for existing customers, I might just buy a "new" Hopper outright rather than extending the contract yet again, since the price isn't much of a deal anyway. Or at least, I am hoping that I can find it on the Internet for a bit lower than MSRP, like I could Hopper 1.0 months ago.

Would this be the same pricing for us who already have the hopper and essentially would just need the new stuff sent to swap out? Seems excessive to me. I can understand it for those with vip setups, but not for existing hopper setups.

Wasn't aware the Hopper 1's were $50 ( or free for some ) Looks like the updated features and built-in Sling is going to cost customers much more $$.
I finally networked up one of my 722s. I may just grab a Sling adapter for $50.

Thanks for update and info very interesting on pricing :)

Another question concerning Hopper with Sling upgrades is whether or not current Hopper users will even qualify for an upgrade. If DISH follows its current business rule to not allow upgrades within the same receiver family, it's possible that it won't be allowed. We ran in to this issue when 622 users weren't allowed to upgrade to a Sling compatible 722. It may all depend on whether DISH considers the Hopper1 and Hopper2 to be in the same family or not. Hopefully this will be answered in tomorrow mornings Retailer Chat.

I remember that and then they corrected the situation by setting up shipped orders for upgrades and anyone with a 622 doing an upgrade would be sent a 722/722k. I believe that issue happened because the system didnt differentiate between models in the same family. I'm pretty certain that's been addressed and not going to happen again.

Actually all the staff here pays for the trip out of their own pockets. (Myself included)

All the extra money from Pub Members stays for keeping the site running.

Even the holiday party we had a few weeks ago came out of my own pocket, and we gave away a few thousand $$$ of prizes and shipping.

So THANK YOU to all our members who decide this site is worth supporting.

I've been to a Satelliteguys event and I can tell you the guys and gals who go do indeed pay for it out of their own pockets. THANK YOU to all who are representing Satelliteguys at CES.

I wish I had more to share but this CES has been dull so far.

I consider the Hopper update to be an evolution not a revolution. But it's a positive step in the right direction.

We walked around to all the major booths and I was not impressed. Even all the Ultra HD sets did not impress me. I didn't think the pq was as good as what I saw demoed last year. In fact many if the displays you could see the pixels on the screen. It's 4k you should not see the pixels!.

Do they even have 4k sources to feed those displays?

Hopper 3.0 chipset? Impressive chip, does 4k and H.265 (HEVC)

In 4K technology, the TV / video industry has come up with something worthy of a consumer's serious consideration. With its 4Kp60 HEVC decoding capabilities, Broadcom's BCM7445 fills a very important gap in the video delivery pipeline for the acceleration of 4K adoption.

The BCM7445 is a STB solution aimed at making its way into service provide boxes (such as those from Comcast or Dish). In addition to implementing all the necessary security measures for a conditional access system, the SoC also integrates a programmable multi-format decoder (including H.265 / HEVC) and the ability to transcode up to four 1080p30 streams in real-time.

Imagine the angst of everyone needing to upgrade like when they did the conversion from MPEG2 to MPEG4.

I agree that it sounds like a dull CES. THe new Hopper sounds like another way to just get an upgrade and 2 year commitment from existing customers for DISH. I am not impressed with this new hopper at all. It sounds like they just added the newest broad band chip and added built in sling and VIOLA: new model of the hopper. I would of liked more tuners or more ota tuners or the ability to integrate two hoppers and tuners using a common menu. You could see all the shows on both hoppers and pick which tuner you want to record to on which hopper. But this new hopper sounds very underwhelming in its features. As for 4k , I predict now it will flop ,just like 3-D did. People will NOT pay $20,000.00 - $25,000.00 for a tv that can't even receive any programming in 4k ,since no one is broadcasting in 4k and won't be for quite some time, IF EVER.
