DISH Price Increase 1/17/2013 (UPDATED!)

It's not a matter of offense. It's just a matter of facts. The fact that I don't care for AMC since the day it turned into just another commercial channel is irrelevant in this conversation. This the the hardest point to get across when talking about putting pressure of program providers to keep costs in check. I don't want anyone's channels to be removed either, but I also don't want to be forced to pay for others' favorite programs which reside on the "one-trick-pony channel".

They do have more than one show that's good. I know you probably could care less about awards but some people do. AMC cleans up. OK so it's not quantity but it's quality. I could care less about MTV and their programming. I bet you even of the AMC thing wouldn't have got worked out they still would have raised prices. Plus the whole AMC thing was about the law suite. I think we all should know that by now.

Look it's only TV. I don' t want to pay more either but again I pay for lots and lots of channels that I never watch. We all do that. Just because say MTV gets better ratings then this or that channel doesn't make it more fair. Really why should I have to pay for MTV? Why should I have to pay for Lifetime? That's the way it is.

I don't look at it as being forced to pay. IF and when it gets to expensive I'll drop TV. We all just subsidize each others favorite channels. For me AEP is way over priced and when my promo is over I will drop it. It is to bad we can't do that for other channels too.

I agree. I don't want anyone's channels to go away. Like I said it's only TV. It's nothing to get worked up over or pissed. If certain TV channels going up in price bother you drop pay TV. We all subsidize each others channels.

I have no idea why people would think if AMC wasn't around we wouldn't have got an increase. There will always be an increase no matter what.

Show me once ever when your bill went down when they dropped channels.

There once was a package called Platinum HD which lost a bunch of channels. At that time, Dish dropped the price dramatically and combined it with the add-on HD charge of $10 for a total of $10. It wasn't as great a deal as HD Essentials or whatever that HD-only package was called. But I was pleased.

You might have a point if AMC wasn't in the lower A120 package for $10 cheaper. You don't have to have the A120+ to get AMC. I bet the A120+ increase had to do with sports or Dish wanting people to pay $5 more for A200.

I can see it as a combination of both. RSN price hikes, and the AMC slate of channels being added to AT120. They might have chosen to raise the price on the AT120+ only because it maybe was a much more popular package than AT120.

Maybe. Who really knows. I still say it had to do with the law suite and not AMC wanting a god awful amount to renew the contract. I'm still wondering why AEP went up $15 and nothing was added. No more HD premiums or making all the premiums HD. No sports pack added like Direct.

Got my first bill since the increase yesterday. I have AT200 and my bill went up $5. Would have been $6 but my DVR fee grandfathering expiration credit was bumped up a dollar to match the increase to $7 (nicely surprised me). I have five more months of DVR fee credit and will then revisit my pay TV future.

I guess one of the nice things that has gone on as of late, is that dish has been nice with programming credits. I enjoy sports pack and looked into another six months and was offered half off.

I looked at my first bill since the price increase and was pleasantly surprised. My billing date is the 13th, covers from the 28th of the month and is paid on the 4th of the following month. Since the new prices went into effect on the 17th I got 11 "free of price increase" days on my February bill. They normally prorate this and add it to the next months bill but they didn't do it this time. I have the AEP package and my bill went up by $5.60 which is OK with me. I have HD free for autopay and got the $10.00 X 18 credit.

After reviewing my options, I changed my package to the Welcome Pack. My wife doesn't care about HD and any can get anything she watches. I do care about HD but can access anything I care about seeing on Roku. The bang for the buck just isn't there as much as it used to be. Eventually I'm afraid cable and satellite are going to go the way of landlines.

I have to admit, I use to swear up and down that this "streaming downloading stuff" would never catch on. I thought we been brought up to want to own all we can, including our favorite movies and TV shows. We would want a hard copy to touch and look at, even if we only play it once a year! But I have gone to the other side...As I'm aging, I finding I don't need to own every DVD I ever liked. Most of the ones I bought just sit on my DVD shelves. While with Amazon Pime, Roku, BB and Dish, I can still see pretty much anything I want to watch, and there's no need to pay out big bucks to have my own copy to hold and dust off every week.

I know what you mean. I have 2 small bookshelves full of dvds and my 5 or 6 blu-ray dvds. I have collections of some childhood shows I loved, like Lost in Space, Star Trek, St-Next Generation, Bewitched, Wonder Woman, Bionic Woman, 6 Million Dollar man, etc. I also have certain movies I wanted to own. But funny I can still watch just about all these shows on either ota Metv or Netflix. The physical dvds are gathering dust , as I don't even use my blu-ray player that often. For that matter I don't own that many blu-rays because I simply can't see paying that much anymore for a blu-ray copy. I see everything going digital or streaming in the next 5 - 10 years, depending on the broadband infrastructure in this country. First the cities will go , followed by the suburbs and the last to ever go would be the rural areas. But if broadband never makes it out to the country , then satellite will still have customers. But I can't see the future of satellite or cable lasting in it's present incarnation , in the future. Something has to change .

Don't forget Get Smart, Incredible Hulk, MacGyver, Night Rider, etc etc. Anyway....

I use a different approach. The collections I really enjoy I have ripped to EHDs, keeping the originals stored away as backup. Using my WDTV gives me instant access to almost anything in my collection, while not having to worry if the streaming services will take anything away, which I have seen happen in the past. On demand is a misnomer, it really is On Availability. My system is truly On Demand.

I've done the same thing. I have about 3TB of tv series and movies I've ripped to my NAS and access around the house on wdtv boxes. I have 2 wdtv hubs with 1TB internal drives that I put stuff on to view when we travel. All my dvds are boxed up in a closet.
