Fees increasing?

I think you misinterpreted. There is no actual fee for the first Hopper - or any first receiver for that matter with Dish. You do pay now a combined $10 fee which is the DVR fee and whole home fee. That fee will now be $14. Then every Hopper after the first will go from $7 each to $14 each. So with your four Hoppers (I didn't think dish allowed that on one account) your fees will increase $25. Total of these fees will be $70.

Thanks all for clearing this up, I understand now (I think).... My 1st Hopper remains "free"; my DVR Fee will go from $10 to $14; and my remaining 3 Hoppers will all go from $7 each to $14 each.... Thus, the additional $25 per month increase... The 2 Joeys remain at $7 each...

Tampa 8 you're right about the 4 Hoppers not available on accounts as a matter of course..... I had to go to the DISH Executive Resolutions Dept. in Denver to get the 4 Hoppers authorized.... I argued that I had dropped my 6 VIP Receivers, all with OTA Tuners, to later find out that the 4 Joeys I had attached to my original 2 Hoppers did not have their own OTA tuners, after I had purchased 6 OTA modules which DISH Tech Support had said would work on the Joeys.... They checked the notes on my acct., confirmed the history, and then added a special code to my acct. allowing the 4 Hoppers.... I did have to add another multi-switch and DPP-44 to my set-up to make it all work..... Took a while, not fun week, and took 3 different service techs to make it work...

Been there done that ;) . Can all 4 of your Hoppers see each other? Mine can, I made a diagram almost a year ago about three Hoppers, same concept applies to four, just switch the solo node for a duo and terminate unused client ports :-

The only way out of fees appears to be cable with TiVo. But, then you are really prepaying for the fees. The TiVo mini helps a lot to speed up the payback of the up front investment. Unfortunately cable is not an option for everyone.

Yeah TiVo is nice but you have to pay 500.00 upfront for the lifetime service. Then if you get another TiVo it doesn't cover that. It only covers the TiVo you bought the sub for.

It's good to see many subs saying in effect "I'm mad as hell, and ......."

I was as happy as a clam with my AEP 2H/2J setup prior to the announcement. I was paying $157 + tax (with a $10/18 adjustment for AEP). I have BB@Home and the PP.
I called Dish yesterday and turned in a Joey (there's no return charge for any interested subs) and dropped from the AEP to AT200 and cancelled 2 premimums. This would have reduced my bill to $131 + tax but the CSR gave me all 4 premiums for 6 months for $128 + tax.

I'm really happy that I made the move. The only channels that my wife and I lost that we occasionally watched were H2, NatGeoWild and BloombergHD.

Thanks Dish, for waking me up, and causing me to open my window and yell "..........".

How many instances has Dish leaked info about a price increase on packages, equipment fees, etc, heard any amount of complaints about it, and backed off though ? Sure, they might appease people on a case-by-case basis and offer short-term credits (to shut up the most vocal complainers) to offset the increase, but eventually they kick in, while 95% of customers pay the add'l cost without making a peep or switching providers.

Be sure and drop the useless protection plan as well. Only need to have it for 4 months if you ever need service done to your setup. Can add it right before a service call/

So if you need a service call will Dish let you add the Protection Plan at the same time or should you join the plan the day before? What is the charge if you have or don't have the plan? What about if you have to send a Hopper or Joey back to be swapped out, is it better just to pay for the shipping?

Yeah TiVo is nice but you have to pay 500.00 upfront for the lifetime service. Then if you get another TiVo it doesn't cover that. It only covers the TiVo you bought the sub for.

The lifetime fee is $400 for each unit after the first. But, yes that is quite a hefty upfront cost. I have two Tivo's myself and they are really nice with great interfaces. The first one I have is a Tivo 40 gb series 2 (single tuner) that I bought off of craigslist last year for $50. I then bought a refurbished 500gb Premiere (two tuner) with lifetime included for $400 (a special Tivo offer). They're both ota, since I have Dish for my pay-tv service. But with those two units plus my htpc, I could easily transition to ota or cable service if Dish gets too stupid with fees. Since I only have one 722K, I think I'm pretty safe for another year. But at least I have a choice, sadly there are people who get satellite service because there is nothing else available.

So if you have cable service do you still need their set top box too along with the TIVO box? How does OTA work in to the setup? Does it go thru the TIVO box or the cable companies set top box? I am totally unfamiliar with TIVO. I have seen a TIVO in operation before at a friends house. It was about 10 years ago when Direct TV and TIVO were in the same set top box.

Does the OTA connect to the TIVO box and kinda works like Dish's DVRs? Get a guide, can record, etc?

Antenna connects directly to your Tivo. The better the antenna set-up, the better the reception. I have a rotary antenna attached to the chimney of my 2-story house. I can pick-up and record everything. The high fee cost is due to the fact that Tivo supplies you with a full guide that goes out 14 days. And of course you can record with a Tivo, that's the whole point of them. And like my 722K, I can record two programs and watch a recorded program at the same time with the premiere.

OK, thanks for the info. Something to think about.

If enough subs vote with their money, it could have the Netflix effect, but to get a large enough percentage of 14 million people to participate would be a stretch.

I have a feeling that NETFLIX is about to see even more sub loss if they institute the new "NO Sharing" policy with their subscription. I read today that they are considering charging per box that you watch Netflix on.

"Our business model works too good. Let's see if we can break it".

They broke it first when they split their dvd business off from their streaming video. This new idea of no sharing should break pretty well for good. At least in my household.

Same here, a 100% increase caused me to drop the dvd service. If they do this I will likely drop it all together. I currently use 4 devices with netflix.

I am holding off on calling dish unroll closer to the date of this increase, but I will be dropping some programming. I have had the pp for a couple years more and may get rid of it, but I thought it was helping me get the best offers as an existing sub so I don't know.

Geez, sounds a lot like receiver fees for additional receivers.
