MLB 2013 Season

Another solid start for Kershaw.

A complete game with one run allowed.

According to the ESPN play-by-play log, David Ortiz just stole third base. That gives him the second highest single season stolen base total (one) in his long career.

How did it happen?

The pitcher actually took a nap and woke up 2 mins later and he was there. :D

He didn't even draw a throw they were so shocked!!

It happened in the first inning after Ortiz already had given the Red Sox a 2-0 lead with a one-out single against White Sox starter Hector Santiago. Mike Napoli had worked a walk to bring up Daniel Nava, and seeking a chance to add another run, manager John Farrell relayed a sign from the dugout for Ortiz to take off for third.

“I was like, ‘Are you sure?’” Ortiz said.

What David Ortiz' steal of third base says about the health of his heels

As usual, the media jumps to conclusions and are often incorrect.

Mattingly will be around for a while. He rightly publicly criticized the teams lack of heart and was fully supported by management. Looks like some key players maybe traded or sat down while young prospects like Puig will get a chance to show the Veterans why it is important to care.

That is the problem with comparing number after one month. Compare Harper and Trout now.

And I guarantee you, barring injury, that Trout will again finish the year with much better numbers than Harper, and Harper will still get more hype because he plays on the east coast.

He isn't doing it now. Who knows he could be a one year wonder. Seen it before.

There was a wire service article about Harper the other day, talking about some young player in the early 1940s who was Mickey Mantle before there was a Mickey Mantle, but he basically beat his body to a pulp by playing too hard. Does anyone know what player that would have been?

Back in the spring of 1982, I remember Bill James wrote a harsh criticism of Red Sox thirdbaseman Butch Hobson, saying that he played too hard for his own good, and for his team's own good. James went on to level that same criticism at two other, much better and more herald ballplayers of that era, George Brett and Paul Molitor. He said that baseball isn't football, and a player shouldn't play each game like there's no tomorrow, because in baseball, with a 162 game season, there are lots of tomorrows, but at that point in their careers, Brett and Militor were already missing about 30 games a year from injuries they incurred by playing too hard.

A lot has been written about Harper in that regard. He crashed into another outfield wall a few days ago. Still, I have to tell you that Harper is a treat to watch play. You can't look away when he is involved in a play, because you might miss something special if you do.

True. So could Harper. Both did good last year. Trout did much better and Harper got the attention. Both are doing good this year. Trout is doing better and still Harper is getting most of the attention.

I heard a lot more about Trout than I did about Harper.

Trout is getting less attention because he is not getting the media "hype" BS such as his poor outfield play...not wanting to run into the wall again, etc. Trout shuts up, stays focused and just goes about his business. If you look at him after he has hit for the cycle or if he has a sombrero, he has the same look on his face. The kid just plays!
