DISH Reaches Long Term Agreement with DISNEY / ESPN / ABC

There is no September 31st :)

That's what I was thinking too, but the article is dated 10/3 and is the first to state that the extension is through the end of October when every other report had been saying it was a 3 day extension.

However, I find it odd that we're having a chat today. Who knows!

There is no September 31st :)......

Sure there is. Congress declared it so there'd be an extra day in the fiscal year to haggle.

And they're working on a bill now to make the sun stand still in the sky. After all, it's been done before and surely they're just as powerful as ......

Not to say they think a tad highly of themselves.

Sorry about that I meant the 30th. :)

It is unusual for them to have a chat on Fridays so I will tune in today and report anything of interest. :)

One thing we should all agree on is if auto hop is the problem, it should be removed. I like it a lot but if every network decides to hold out because of it, we won't have it or the stations anyway. I have CBS blocked out now. Next will be ABC. Not much left to autohop.

Well, that's a point. Maybe if we would just give back the right to use a DVR......

It feels like a National Geographic nature show. You know, where the herd (Networks) go after the weakest in the pack. (of subscribers)

I seem to remember the VCR caused all kinds of havoc early on with the movie industry worried it would kill all their profits. They eventually figured out how to monetize it and the business model changed. The networks have to come up with a similar way to evolve as DVR/Autohop is here and out of Pandora's box. I'm sure they will think of something, I just hope however they evolve comes before we lose more channels.

Love the Hopper/Joey system. But, we do not use PrimeTime Anytime, or auto hop. I mean, we have a certain set number of shows and channels we watch and really have no need to record anything else except what we are interested in. I love the innovation of auto-hop and think that is great that it is there for people to use. But, we just do not. Now, I am hoping to get Disney back in HD and maybe ESPNu/ESPNNEWS in HD.

Oh no, there have been talks which have gone on for many many months after the contract expired. In fact the Media General stations contract expired 3 months ago and they were working on a deal when Media General pulled the channels at the beginning of the month.

The Networks are making money off of programming that was on the air decades ago, money they probably never dreamed they would be able to make, thanks to the inventions of DVDs and online streaming. They use Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, and DVD sales to make money on programming. They even have advertising inserted into syndicated programming!

I do have this "criticism" or sorts though. The customer here is caught in the middle. We are not doing anything except paying our bills. We pay our Dish bill and we get this constant tease of channel logos being switched on and off. Like we are in the middle of negotiations also. We want what we pay for.
I would not like to pay more for my subscription, but then I get an email saying that leased equipment will be taxed more. So, there is an increase.
And we cannot get Disney back in HD, or ESPNu in HD, etc? And leased equipment will cost more?
The customer, although at least I think Charlie is doing what he says and watching out for his customers, is caught in the middle in all of this. And in a way, we are being played with.

No matter what product you buy the consumer is ALWAYS caught in the middle.

Contract things like this happen with almost EVERY product out there you just don't know about it.

Any companies first duty always is to maximize profits for themselves and their shareholders. That is the way business works.

And the customer always has the right to cancel their service and choose another provider that better fits their needs. I know we want what we're paying for but the providers have the right to do what they need in order to make a profit. We have a choice to stay with them or not.

I agree Scott and I did not mean anything derogatory with that posting. It's just, in all of this, the way I feel (maybe I'm the only one I don't know) sometimes. I work for City Government. SO, I understand totally about being in the middle and how things work.

Ahh,after a few hours working on roofing the porch, and a trip to see a man about a dog,my gut feels much better now.:D

I wouldn't be surprised if they have extended talks through Oct.Seems like the Fox contract talks kept getting extended for a good bit.Although they did go dark for a short period.

Do you not know how the world works?
